  1. Oh he'll get a huge ovation at Nationals Park. Seems to be at least 30 pct Phillies fans even in the recent down years That was LOL about the batteries...hopefully by then we're throwing micro-solar panels instead though
  2. Harper is all over the board - tons of strikeouts, bad defense but great walk rate and will always hit bombs. It's not like he's been in a bad lineup. I'm hoping Citizens Bank Park helps him with both HRs and defense (more playable corner spots). There's no way it's a bad contract unless he gets major injuries in the early years. A lot of people (inc. national media) thought he would average more than $35 million over 10 years. This is like $33 million over 10 years plus three years free! This also makes Trout to Philly (his hometown, just across the river) a very real thing from both a trade and FA perspective for the next couple years. Y'all are going to get sick of media talking about it, will he go home or take a Yankee mega-mega-deal? The Phillies still have challenges. Rotation isn't really playoff-worthy. Minor league system very sparse which hurts in terms of trade chips and also just general depth. But man it's good to be able to believe for the first time in almost a decade.
  3. Good call on Cespedes, who is repped by Roc Nation. He signed for 3/75 in 2016 and for one year, both sides were thrilled with it. So before 2017, they made it 4/110 and that has been a disaster. Mets have to sit there while he gobbles up payroll, YC has to worry about his long term prospects. Of course injuries are unpredictable, but have to figure Harper and the Dodgers have reasons not to do a high dollar, short term deal. It's probably obvious I'm trying to talk myself into Harper/Phillies still happening. But if he and his family are dead set on going west (or Yankees), so be it.
  4. OK, here's Ken Rosenthal from Feb 1 of this year. My point is if the Dodgers were willing to do a mega deal, why not get in on Harper earlier? It's rare to see a team totally change course in late February. So this might just be a Boras ploy to raise the Phillies price. I also think he'd be OK with Philly but his family really wants to get him west.
  5. Here's what I'm referring to via LA Times - might just be paying lip service but it was a stated goal by ownership
  6. I'm thinking that if he gets $40 mil or more this year, Dodgers could also get hit with the penalty of 10 draft spots lower, and create a scenario where that would also happen in subsequent years, when they would also get dinged even more for repeat overages. Y'all are correct, it's certainly doable. I just think it would be a surprising change of direction from the rest of their offseason.
  7. On the Dodgers short term offer to Harper: Wouldn't it be a luxury tax disaster even in year one? But especially in the latter years, and this is a team trying to rein in financial troubles Is there a recent MLB example of one the highest paid players on a good team being on a short term deal? I can't think of any
  8. It was entertaining enough, and well acted. At this point, we know the formula for the show and part of that is it peaks early and goes downhill when the core storyline doesn't pay off: ridiculous climax (S1), incomprehensible (S2) and now boring/blah (S3). I hope HBO doesn't order another season, because I'll watch but don't trust it.
  9. Trump will pardon him
  10. SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed a man walking outside his vehicle on Interstate 690 around midnight, a source has confirmed for Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. The man in his 30s had been in a car with four others near Thompson Road in Syracuse when their vehicle crashed for unknown reasons, said a source familiar with the investigation. The man at some point got out of his vehicle, the source said. That’s when Boeheim drove by and struck the pedestrian, the source said. Boeheim is cooperating with the investigation, the source added. Syracuse police Chief Kenton Buckner said a news release would be coming shortly.
  11. Quite a reversal of fortunes for MC after Otamendi 2nd yellow. Were able to keep guys somewhat fresh despite being down a man, and picked up the two late goals for a huge edge in this tie
  12. I don't understand the Spanish broadcast so didn't hear discussion. Just looked to me like the shot was moving too fast for him to get his arm out of the way. I know they review it so must have been convincing
  13. Schalke up 2-1, ANOTHER questionable PK on what looked like a slip/dive on a long free kick into the area
  14. Schalke tie it up, PK on a pretty liberal handball-in-box call
  15. City get an easy one after lazy turnover by Schalke GK
  16. If you can get Galavision you can watch the other match en Espanol
  17. Bartles replied to Napoleon's topic in Other Sports
Cordeiro casually drops in "intercontinental playoffs" with no logistical details...probably no more convenient than current set up
  18. Was hoping the Phillies would ink Harper before Manny went, because with only one whale left, Boras can jack the price up and make them sweat. But I think Manny getting 300m helps scare off those mystery teams that were only hanging around looking for a bargain on either guy. The Nationals should jump back in but there hasn't been much buzz about them in a while.
  19. Sports Illustrated gives its blessing / curse to the completion of the process
  20. My Philly schedule at the moment, all small venues: Ryan Bingham (wife's suggestion, but I like his show too) Julia Jacklin / Black Bear Eagle Scout Passion Pit The Faint
  21. Interesting. I would not have expected SEA to be on the left side of the chart, nor SD on the right side (even barely). Obviously lots of factors besides the specific acreage influence hitting/pitching splits. I always felt Arlington had perfect dimensions but the heat/jetstream make it a launching pad much of the time.
  22. I hope the players are compiling evidence then, because if it's that widespread they will win in court again. But so many teams are tanking and/or using analytics as a crutch to avoid signing veterans for more money, I think the market for guys like Moustakas (must less Reynolds) just isn't very strong regardless of collusion. We'll see how it ends up when we get close to opening day...no doubt the big fish are clogging up at least a few other pieces that will fall into place quickly when even one of Bryce/Manny gets done.
  23. Is Stark suggesting there's some secret collusion cabal that OK's certain players to be bid out one at a time? Sorry, but the media - even the good national writers - aren't doing a great job explaining what's so wrong about this offseason. Leave aside Harper and Machado, those are rare cases and they'll get great contracts either way. Is there some team(s) that desperately need Kimbrel, Keuchel, etc but aren't talking to them?
  24. Use your good eye
