  1. Sweetwater Oyster Bar in Cedar Park has an 11-6 happy hour Mon -Sat, with $1 gulf oysters and $3 east coast oysters. Limit is 1 dozen per person on the gulf oysters. https://sweetwateroysterbar.com/
  2. FAFO. If you think Russia is so grand, put your money where your mouth is and move there. This guy's a hero and should be commended. Everyone who agrees with him should follow his lead and do the same.
  3. Hobbits like to get high on weed, it's the orcs that love their vodka.
  4. Mr. Terrific was great. And I loved the quick glimpse we caught of the exterior of the Justice Gang's Hall of Justice.
  5. Anyway I'm good with trailers. I like to know what's coming and I like to see the previews in full sound and glory on the big screen. I don't like pre-movie commercials, straight up product advertisements. And none of the Alamo Drafthouse locations I've ever been to, have shown those (aside from promoting their own theaters/merch that is).
  6. Yeah my 15yo son had similar issues, until he got his first girlfriend right at the end of the schoolyear. Now he's gaming a lot less and he's become a workout fiend (dad, I actually have ABS, check this out!). Also, he now showers daily and brushes his teeth at least 3x per day! Just a maturity issue for him, and he's finally coming around.
  7. Wow the ags are jumping right into decommit season a little earlier than normal this year.
  8. In a strange coincidence, there was also a Mr. Gatti's there at Rockwood and Anderson Lane.
  9. Reed's not as much of a problem as their mysterious o-line which should be good but is continuously shitty.
  10. My now-senior wouldn't even talk to us about any type of major or any potential college until January or February. She was paralyzed with fear because she had no clue what she might want to do, and couldn't imagine herself in a college environment and so wouldn't allow herself to even think about it. We finally just took her on a couple of campus visits and that's when she could finally see herself on a campus as a college student, and it has opened her up to some possibilities. Tough part for me is, she's going to be auto-admit to UT but for various reasons she doesn't really want to go to there. So I find myself on this thread looking at other options.
  11. Yeah for mine, she actually took two dual credit courses from ACC in the first summer session, so I definitely give her some leeway there. Still, it only gets more busy from here through the end of marching season in November. But she's made the bed and she'll have to lie in it.
  12. This seems like it might be true if your kid wants to be a marching band director someday, but I don't think jj was referring to that specific case, just pointing out in general that the marching arts in college, are at a much lower level than they are at competitive high schools. Also, if your kid wants specifically to be a marching band director and not just a music educator, then participating in DCI is probably more important than whatever college marching band they end up in. My kids are in the best 5A marching band in the state (won the state title 6x in a row now) and all of the directors have DCI experience.
  13. It's a lot of work but also extremely rewarding. I've gotten to experience being on the field and contributing, as the band has won UIL State, been highly competitive at BOA-San Antonio, and also finished 5th in the entire country at the BOA Grand Nationals in Indianapolis. It's a pretty great feeling and getting to share at least a little of it with the kids is quite satisfying. My high school marching band was pretty crappy, so getting some of that vicariously, is also a bit of a thrill, I'm not gonna lie.
  14. I do "pit pack" for our kids' high school marching band, including being around for some of the in-week rehearsals, and all of the football games and competitions. We load and unload a full semi trailer full of instruments, and usually two 24' box trucks full of props, for every performance. On a BOA or UIL competition day, we might load/unload 4 times in a single day, if the schedule works out so that the band can get to an offsite stadium for an extra rehearsal in-between morning prelims and evening finals. It's brutal.
  15. As others have pointed out, the commitment in college band is much lower than in high school marching band, especially high school band in the state of Texas (or Indiana). It's far more social and far less of a grind. There are of course commitments to Saturday football games at the home stadium, and maybe some travel for nearby away games and/or bowl games, but there's none of those all-day or multi-day UIL or BOA competitions. And the in-week rehearsal schedule is far less rigorous as well.
  16. Word. It's been a beating. I strongly encouraged her to knock some of that shit out before summer band started, and of course summer band has now started, and zero essay activity has occurred.
  17. Race week! Our long international nightmare is over! And at my favorite track of all time, no less.
  18. Saw it over the weekend with the family and really liked it for many of the same reasons mentioned above-- Superman more human and relatable than any version since 1978. And more "fun" and less gods of war, even with high stakes. Sure it had some camp, for me not too much, though I can see how others might not like it. I think this could be a great building block for a DCU, I'm eager to see what they do next. Oh and the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel can get it. I really enjoyed her portrayal of Lois, definitely the best since Margot Kidder.
  19. Yes, these movie trailers are a totally new thing. No theater has ever shown Previews of Coming Attractions, until now!
  20. Hot damn I love me some 675. 84, clouds, and cool breezes at my house right now. At noon, on 7/20. Should probably cross-post this on the kickass things in Austin thread.
  21. You should order lobster. It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking some up.
  22. That's when I noticed Karl Urban's genius. I'd watched LOTR a dozen times at least and never really noticed him. It wasn't until after the 3rd Star Trek movie, and then I watched LOTR again, and I was all, HOLY CRAP, Eomer is BONES! And then seeing him show up as Skurge in Thor, was really amusing,

  24. Anyone who watched that game and didn't come away with the impression that Texas completely dominated, physically whipped, and totally outclassed the ags on an athlete-by-athlete basis at pretty much every single position on the field, and only kept the ags sort of close by making several critical, boneheaded, self-inflicted mistakes, is kidding himself about what actually happened on the field that day. But it's the ags, and lying to themselves, and everyone else, is their very nature.
