  1. Unfortunately, we are waiting on my wife retiring from the state. My job is portable so I can live anywhere. I guess if the legislature destroys public schools in the next session, we may just say fuck it and bail early so my youngest can spend her last 6 years getting educated.
  2. IIRC, a residential water system is built to support fighting maybe 2-3 fires at a time. Trying to fight 20+ and you won't have water in about 3 minutes. As each house burns down, that water line is now spewing water, taking pressure out of the system anyway. Don't forget that water pump stations and tanks that force water up those hills also burn up. You can have 1 million LAFD firefighters out there but there's no way to get enough water to residential areas so it won't make a shit. Plus, the only real way to fight wildfires is to cut fire blocks. Good luck doing that in the steep canyons these fires are burning through. West Austin, you're up next.
  3. Nah, you’ll get dropped so it won’t cost you anything.
  4. Just spent a week in Colorado and having back to back weeks of 30-something degrees between CO and TX, I finally could tell that 30 degrees in Texas is so much worse. Never once felt cold in CO. Even when it was 18 degrees one day when we were skiing, it was perfectly fine. The lack of humidity is huge. My uncle grew up in Glenwood Springs and he always said cold days in TX were way worse than the same temp in CO. Until I experienced it immediately back to back, I didn’t realize how big of a difference it actually was. Only 7 more years until we move to Fort Collins.
  5. Sports don’t mean shit because they are the differentiator for athletic scholarships and lessened admissions standards for recruited athletes. Having a job matters more especially if they get promoted while working. Community service and extracurriculars related to their major are valuable. But to be honest, for 99% of colleges none of it matters that much. AP course load is supposedly the biggest indicator of college success and if they take the most rigorous offering for each class and have good grades, they’ll do well. For that 1% (Harvard, etc) You better be in the top 1% in grades, test scores, and cured cancer in an extracurricular you founded.
  6. I wonder which town is going to get an Ashli Babbitt High School. The Ashlie Babbitt Bullet Catchers would be a great mascot though.
  7. When we win the title, aggy, as a branch of the University of Texas, will claim the title as their own. Yep. We are fucked.
  8. To be fair, it's harder to grift with GoFundMe if you admit to having insurance coverage.
  9. Wait until 1/21 and you'll be reminiscing about these halcyon days.
  10. This. If there's one thing you have to give Trump is that he's very open about his fascism. It's not like he tries to hide it from the public.
  11. Carriers wouldn't fit. But, yes, let's anchor billions of dollars of naval assets in the grid lock that is the Port of Panama while waiting days/weeks to transverse the canal. Talk about shooting fish in a barrel.
  12. Odds are greater than zero that this is our next UT President.
  13. Can't wait to see the stellar candidate Abbott forces on the the university.
  14. This thread is a good reminder to go set a trailing stop loss on my IRA and to move my oldest kid's 529 into the FDIC-insured option before the 20th.

    Vinyl

I took my 12YO to Waterloo and she asked for her first vinyl. It was a Taylor Swift record of course. Taught her how to use the turntable. She sat there listening in silence and said “there’s so much more music in these songs.” She was blown away at how much better vinyl sounded than Spotify. She listened to the album in its entirety. I may have a convert.
  16. I’ll bet that as soon as Trump is sworn in, he makes some incoherent speech to raise the flag to full mast and they do it.
  17. She’ll get leave with pay until she’s laid off next week.
  18. I had the same thought about ATJ. He’s usually really good but not here. Also, for a Brit, his British accent sounds fake.
  19. I've barely been at my current company for a year so I inherited all of my staff. They are all in roles that could be filled domestically. I've filled these exact roles at other companies for 25 years without having to resort to visas. We do pay for their citizenship legal fees after 3 years of employment and they have to agree to stay 3 years past that. It takes 4 years for the green card process. So, we have staff for a guaranteed 10 years with no risk of them leaving. That could be the reason why we favor H1B visas over domestic candidates. On the other hand, I've gone to one of our college recruiting events and 90% of the attendees are foreign students so maybe that's just what the hiring pool for my company looks like.
  20. I'll be seeing the Murder City Devils in Denver tonight. Should be good.
  21. Here are my favorite 10 albums of the year. After coming up with my list, I wonder where all the male musicians are. Women aren't just owning pop music but it seems like they own all genres now. Chelsea Wolfe - She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She - I spin this album every week. It's a departure from her usual folk black metal and is borderline industrial. Songwriting and production are top notch. St. Vincent - All Born Screaming - I didn't like St. Vincent's early albums that everyone seems to love but the last three have gotten progressively better and this one is her best. I'm oddly in love with her version of this album sang completely in Spanish. It shouldn't work but it works wonderfully. The Cure - Songs of a Lost World - These songs could appear on any of their seminal albums and fit perfectly. There's not a weak track on this record. Bernard Butler - Good Grief - Bernard Butler is an underappreciated guitarist and songwriter. It's Britpop from the lens of a 50-something who has a lot of regret and just wants you to get off his lawn. The Last Dinner Party - Prelude to Ecstasy - The lead single was fine but this album has to be listened to as a whole to get the vibe. Amyl and the Sniffers - Cartoon Darkness - If the second half of this album lived up to the first half, this would be my number one pick. The Jesus Lizard - Rack - Have you ever wondered what The Jesus Lizard would sound like with good production? Well, here you go. This sounds like they found some lost tapes from the 90s. Crows - Reason Enough - Crows are my favorite band of the past few years. This album grows past their post punk sounds and leans into Bowie. Kim Gordon - The Collective - 70 year olds shouldn't be making edgy music like this that grows their sound in new ways. Tess Parks - Pomegranate - Like The Last Dinner Party, this album sets a vibe from beginning to end. It's a really good throwback psych/flower child album.
  22. I thought they had to be paid market wages. I know my 4 visa holders are paid on the same pay scale as anyone else in those roles and receive the same consideration for pay increases as anyone else.
