Unrelated to anything here, but today was a big day for me. I retired from my career. On to a new chapter.

Now I have time to start helping sell off my friends guitar collection like I posted a few months ago. This was the date I was waiting for.

Feels unreal.

The pics you just posted of your friend’s guitar collection, to help remind us, are not displaying properly.

It does, I have come to really love the old Junior/Special sound.

See edit above though,  I meant junior not special. I always reverse them. There's a line of thinking the Juniors sound better with the single P90, I think because the single route maybe? I'm not sure, there's some reason though.

Because P-90s slay, and they slay even harder in the bridge position.

Any of you virtuosos want to come over and do the deed, fine.

No virtuoso, but I might take you up on that next time I'm in ATX.  Enjoy the new guitar!

for real though, I remember going into the GC on south Mopac at one point to get some strings and grabbing some random guitars off the wall as one does. I picked up a very inexpensive tv yellow Epiphone Les Paul Junior off the wall and thought "man this thing is great". I've probably relayed this story before because that is the thing that put the "I sould have one of these" in my head and, in retrospect, it was very stupid that I didn't just buy the thing right there.

I bought on of the Epi Les Paul, two-p-90 Specials a couple of years ago in TV yellow for $400 and it is just a killer guitar. My buddy has the Gibson version and the only noticable difference between them was the nitro vs poly finishes.

Since we're speaking of Juniors and Specials, here's an extra special junior Gibson has cleverly dubbed the "Senior."  Quite the looker.  Maybe I've posted before, I can't recall.   I'm sure no one here will complain:

Sacrilege, but the fact I have my old melody maker is keeping me from getting a single cut Special right now. Damn you Jimmy.

We had a chance to play a couple of tunes with Ray Herndon’s band last night. Only real true pros I’ve played with and man do they make it look easy. Holy shit was that fun.

Can’t really imagine what it feels like to be that good but it’s got to be awesome.

OK, I guess I'll post mine. I got this in a pawn shop in Round Rock about seven years ago this week for $60. I figured it could be a fun project guitar to tear down and experiment with. Turns out it was worth a lot more than I paid for it, early 90s set neck with Gibson branded truss rod cover, really plays great and sounds dang good, too, the only p90 I have ever owned. I just need to play it.

And it came with some awesome dice knobs, which seem to be glued on with some kind of alien technology that is unremovable by human means. I hope I never need to change pots.

HTF does a headstock get broken off inside a hard shell case?

Plus I’ve flown with an acoustic many times, and an electric a few times on Southwest. Every time they’ve let me carry it on.

I’m calling bs.

Last night we had to fill in at our favorite venue (Vernon’s Lakeside in Seven Points if you were wondering) for a band that didn’t show. It’s an outdoor venue where the stage looks at the setting son, which is great except it’s August in Texas. The difference between the sun being up and then being down is just amazing. Literally night and day. It goes from being oppressive to just exactly what you’d want. Nice breeze coming in off the lake and people dancing.

Anyhow we got a request to play some Ozzy at the very end of the night. Not our usual request but we managed to pull off a pretty bad ass rendition of «War Pigs ». We had never played it together as a group so that was pretty satisfying.

Found out they sold the land out from under the place and our last gig there forever is Friday. It’ll probably get turned into tiny little lake front condos. Dammit.

No pron this morning. Just laments.

Come out and see us Friday if you’re in town. If you know the password, I’ll buy you a drink of your choosing. We will blow it out.

Well, there was a followup to the story on KXAN where she claims the airline reimbursed her for one she bought out of a Nashville shop, AND Sweetwater sent her one for free.  So, instead of sending that one back she's actioning it off for charity.

WTF?  That's not how this is supposed to work.  Send that one back to Sweetwater.  She already has a replacement and she's not out any money.

Always fun to play something you’ve never tried. Nice job on war pigs. From time to time if we’ve got a vibe with the people we’ll just look up a request on ultimate guitar and let it rip. Usually goes about how you would expect.

Bummer on losing your favorite place to play. We lost a 3 year every Friday night gig at an awesome place 2 years ago when it sold and never have quite been able to replace it.

And definitely boo on playing into the setting sun in the summer. You can’t complain but it’s fucking brutal. Super impressive to me when you see the real bands do it

Such a bummer man. We played one of the last shows ever, maybe the last, at a local place that was one of the last hold outs for original rock bands. Was bittersweet.

As @Celery Man correctly surmised, I'm pretty sure we drank our entire pay that night. I may have walked with 20 bucks tops.

Playing requests is my absolute favorite part of the gigs these days.  We have about 8 hours of solid material that is a ton of fun, but not a challenge at this point.  When someone comes up mid set and says, "Hey do you know..." that just hits the sweet spot for me.  With War Pigs, we all knew it, but had never played it together.  Earlier in the night a fella came up and wanted us to play "Sold" by John Michael Montgomery.  One of our singers/guitar players said, "you all play a tune, and I'll go out back and learn it."  Three and  a half minutes later, he came back in, I pulled up the bass on Ultimate Guitar, and we were playing the tune.  I had never even heard it before.

I got blisters on my fingers from having not played the bass much recently though.  It was just bad luck that the fill in gig happened the same day as we'd previously scheduled practice.  Seven hours of bass in one day is hell on the old fingertips.

They always feed us and we never pay a bar tab.  Of course, for four hours of play, plus about an hour and a half of set up and take down, I think we only got served 4-5 drink for the entire band.  Three out of five of us don't drink, and the two of us that do certainly don't drink much but water when the sun is beating down.  Pretty sure I put about 10 cups of water down in about 3 hours there at the beginning.  I sweat most of it out.  Looking forward to doing it again Friday!

Sold is not an easy lyric to learn quickly. That’s impressive.

I watched a band learn Fancy on a break the other night because a girl in the audience wanted to sing it. She killed it and so did they.

Ha! I've lived that exact scenario with that same song.  All the little aspiring chanteuses learn "Fancy" on their road to greatness.

For the record, he read the lyrics off the phone but I figure on a request like that you're not required to memorize all those fast words.

Oh yeah, these days 100%. I honestly hardly drink anymore, it's not worth the price the next day!

That show I was referencing was creeping up on 20 years ago, back in my youth.

Classic.

There was a bar in Gun Barrel City just like that, with chicken wire around the stage.  They had signS (i.e., multiple, probably one on each wall) that said "No spitting, No LOUD cussing, No nudity."  I always wondered what the back story was on that.  Rarely does that sign get hung up without multiple incidents that need...correcting.

We have different Roadhouse fantasies.  I've always wanted to rip out someone's esophagus (and to play as well as Jeff Healey).

Facebook knows that I read Surly.  Or Surly is tattling on me.  Or my phone wants to watch the world burn.

I only know about this venue because of this thread.

Dammit, that sucks.  I never played there but swilled many a beer by the lake on its barstools.  This and Vernon's going could totally go in the Enshitification thread.
