2018 San Antonio Spurs Offseason Thread -- Into the Great Unknown

I still think Bertans has some potential. We're so limited on long-range shooting that we really need him to perform in that area. As we've seen, he can get hot on a given night and be a difference-maker...it's just that those nights are too infrequent. Maybe the light switch comes on and stays on for him at some point soon.

I hope his shot will improve with a little bit more consistent playing time

Very reasonable deal for Bertans. I think he still has a lot of upside.

Good luck to Anderson in Memphis. I don't think we will come back five months from now saying, "Damn... if only we still had Kyle Anderson we'd be challenging the Warriors."

I also dont hope we aren't sayin "damn if we still had Anderson we would  have made the playoffs."  :)

38.4% from deep in his 2 years.  TS of almost .600.  If he even gets a tick more efficient to say 40% and .620, it will be pretty elite for a stretch 4/bench guy.  If he stays where he is and simply gets more minutes, at his age and natural development, we're probably looking at a WS/48 guy of about .150-.165 and PER about 16/17.  He has a real opportunity now and is extremely cheap.  About 4% of the cap next year.

Good defender. For cheap I would like this.

I'd like to have this guy, or someone similar, if only just to put on Harden a few games a year. Even if we lose by 25, I still want the bearded one to meet with some actual resistance when he starts toward the bucket.

I want nothing to do with Lowry but Derozan intrigues me. Contract isn't great but would be definitely one of the better players we could get in return for Kawhi.

Attach a decent young player with Derozan and I don't think I would hate that. Maybe they would be willing to take a player in return like Mills? I have no clue what their cap situation is.

Toronto's cap is fucked.  They're at 134 million guaranteed already.  They have OG Anunby who is somewhat intriguing and then a lot of old school type guys like Valanciunas or Poetl who are bigs with no range and can be exploited in the PNR game.  Trading Kawhi for Derozan basically would ensure mediocrity for the foreseeable future as he's a "star" who's way over paid.  But again, having another rumored suitor is a good thing.... Raptors know they need a shake up because they're not a real championship contender with Lowry and/or DD as their best player.  Derozan has been horrible in the playoffs too....

I think some are overvaluing our ability to land big name free agents as a small market franchise. The money is gonna have to go to somebody eventually.

What star are we going to land in FA?

Do you think a star like Durant, Kyrie, Cousins, Butler give us a look? Derozan's contract doesn't look great but how are we gonna feel when our best options are maxing out somebody like Klay Thompson or Kemba Walker?

KD and Klay aren't going anywhere especially if they win again..... They'll both be in for a historic 4 in a row.  If Butler hits UFA, I definitely think we get a meeting.  He's a blue collar guy who thrives on both ends, demands professionalism, knows and respects Pop (who happens to be his coach for USA), and is originally from Texas.  Don't think we'd be interested in Cousins.  No idea on Walker or if we'd have interest in Kyrie.  I think taking on or paying out bad contracts under the idea of "you have to pay someone" is a poor strategy for building a team though....

I don't disagree but I think you have to project who you have a realistic chance of landing in free agency.

"You have to pay someone" isn't a great mindset but that doesn't exclude weighing options in the present vs future.

We landed Lamarcus when he was the most sought after FA a few years ago.  We got a meeting with Durant before he picked Golden State.  We are certainly in the hunt with the bigger markets.

I think our ability to land big name FAs is properly valued.

We've landed one big free agent in recent memory. LMA probably wasn't a top 10 player either.

Plus look at the context. We were coming off a NBA championship, had arguably the greatest coach and power forward recruiting him, and LMA played college ball a couple hours away so there was familiarity with the area. Everything worked in our favor for LMA. The context isn't going to be like that for other free agents.

We're going to likely have to build from the bottom up like we did with Parker, Manu, and Duncan. That is by evaluating well in the draft or making smart moves in free agency/trades.

When you are overloaded with undersized guards who can't play defense and one of them is a shooting specialist who shoots 22% from three in the playoffs, you pretty much have to lock him up. Preferably, you lock him up in a closet until July but in this case, you lock him up with a contract. Suck on that, Warriors!

I actually like this if it's for cheap.

Bryn Forbes is a shooter and scorer that will almost certainly improve once he adjusts to the speed of the game. He went from a .321 3 point shooter to a .390 3 point shooter in year 2. I bet those numbers continue to improve.

For cheap, all we're asking him to do is make some open shots.

All of that would make sense if we didn't have a thousand other back court players, but this is a horribly unbalanced lineup:

PG: Murray, Mills, White, Forbes

SG: Green, Walker, Manu, Marco, Paul

SF: Gay, Placeholder for Uncle Dennis's nephew or whatever flotsam shows up from LA or Philly

PF: Aldridge, Bertans, Metu

C Gasol

How long does it typically take a player to adjust to the “speed to the game”? Or to play defense at a high school level?

Worrying about the balance of the roster is a waste of time until Kawhi is traded. We're likely getting need positions in return if we trade him.

This is why I'm a fan of the Sixers trade package. Saric can play the 4 or 5 and Covington can play the 3 or 4.

Also, lots of rumors that Milutinov could be heading over this year. The roster is far from set.

Lonnie Walker will be good in the future. He has no clue what he's doing yet but has the tools.

Also, from watching these summer league games I won't be surprised if Blossomgame makes the roster. Much more ready than somebody like Metu.

Uh oh Magic.

Let this be true! I hope no one joins Bron. Let’s see how he does in the loaded west not the easy ass east he’s been in his whole career. He runs through the west then I’ll crown his ass

Best name ever but then I got worried for a second...... In Miami?

Not a big fan of the Forbes deal..... I'm going to guess someone is going to be on the move because he's very redundant.  Nothing against him persay, but we don't need another small combo guard who's not a very good passer.

Bertans is more important but going to guess next year isn't fully guaranteed....

Every day I expect to read a headline that Kawhi was dealt, but it never happens. I imagine it's difficult to deal a player with 1 year remaining on his contract who's health status is unknown by the team attempting to deal him and factor in a bitch ass uncle to the equation who is a complete and total amateur I guess it'll be sometime until something happens if anything happens at all. I never would've expected Kawhi to be the type of person who surfaced in the last year, he was going to get paid at some point in this season as well. Too bad he can opt out after this season or he could be dealt to a shit team like Sacramento where he can toil around on 20 win teams for the foreseeable future.

I feel the same way.  Checking here and espn throughout the day waiting to see breaking news.

However, I'm starting to get the feeling that nothing is going to happen.  The spurs have put out what they require in return and it doesn't make sense for them to budge on that now.  I expect him to remain on the team and the Spurs to continue to do what they can to mend the relationship.  They'd rather have nothing in return than give him a way for pennies and set a precendance going forward.

IMO the Spurs are doing a favor to the whole league. By not allowing him to pout and get what he wants, they will deter other players from pulling this bullshit in the future.

I don't think Kawhi gives shit one about his trade value. He torpedoed his trade value the day that he went public with his demand to be moved. I don't think his camp is savvy enough to realize this.

If true, then he ain't showing up for USA basketball and he's not getting traded.
