2022 Volleyball - Stacked as Hell

By the time we were allowed to wander down to North Ave & Oak Street Beach, I was practically in college and was settled into the sports I loved.  Plus, as you probably know, it wasn't exactly Fort Lauderdale or Miramar packed with beautiful people.  But yeah, saw some beach volleyball.  Spent time living in the city, in dumpy near West side 'burbs, NW, SW, and points in between.  I have a "spirited" upbringing.  But once I got to Florida and saw serious, serious beach volleyball...I realized it was a whole 'nother level of athlete.

All that to say, when da' Spring Schedule coming out?

Your calendar is off. The beach match is Saturday, March 25.

According to the hoops announcer the other night, matches will still be free.

Good chance for fans to go watch our newbies and see Parra

Little ridiculous we still can’t get more than a 30-minute show. That’s like 22 minutes of content for the whole fucking season.

I agree, but it is an awesome show for what it is.

The only regular season match they even mention is the loss to Iowa State. I'm with you. I'd love it if they could have made it an hour long show. But I sure liked reliving it in any case.

Zoe Fleck was featured on the podcast Coffee with Berez and Z, featuring Kentucky volleyball players Maddie Berezowitz and Azhani Tealer.

The conversation turns to Texas around the 25:30 mark. She confirms on there the reason she transferred from UCLA was a lack of scholarships for her 5th year, otherwise it's likely she would never have come to Texas

Here's an interview with Logan Eggleston about her experiences as a pro in Turkey thus far. It's conducted by Brooke Nuneviller, the Oregon star who also just went pro in Turkey at about the same time Logan did. Madi Kubik from Nebraska is also on the interview, talking about her experiences as a pro in Puerto Rico.

Brooke has been doing a series of these for Volleyball magazine, including one where she interviews all time Texas great and Olympic gold medalist Chiaka Ogbogu, but this is her best one because the others she's interviewing veterans, but this one she's interviewing two other players who are in the same boat as her. Nothing really about Texas per se in here. It's really all about what they're experiencing as pros, and what an adjustment it's been:

From the 2 matches so far in spring, it does like Swindle is really good, Jenna is legit, Singletary looks great after her RS, Devin is still inconsistent, passing is good but not great (no Barnes yet), but blocking looks much stronger

I mean, I know it’s a spring match but we are up on Baylor 20-5 in the 2nd set

Baylor will just be a good program moving forward instead of what they were with Pressley.

I don't think people realize how good Pressley was. That was a once in a lifetime type player for Baylor.

While I agree about Pressley, I don’t know that I agree about Baylor. I guess it depends on what we’re calling good. They’re recruiting really well, and I think McGuyre is a good coach. Someone is going to have to be the best program in the Big 12 after Texas departs, and while the likeliest answer is BYU, Baylor took take that crown.

They were one of the few teams to beat Wisconsin. They hosted as a top 16 seed. Made it to the Sweet Sixteen. And they were extremely young. Now they’re going to be even younger this season.

Stowers looks like a stud. Not Pressley good, but she looked just a notch below that last night as a true freshman.

I think Baylor is going to be right up there as a Sweet 16 type program for a while, and once they can get some experience, I could see them making another push for a regional host/Final Four again.

The key will be instate recruiting. A&M has three uber recruiters with a lot of relationships in the club world on their staff. UH is on the rise. Their former assistant at TCU looks like he might do something. Tonya Johnson is at LSU. Baylor has made a living grabbing all the girls that Texas didn’t go after. We’ll see how well that works out for them in the long run. But I think they’re here to stay as long as they keep McGuyre, and I don’t think he’s looking to leave.

All that said, Pressley was spectacular. I’m glad I got to watch her as much as I did throughout her career.

They made 3 straight regional semifinals and a final 4 with Pressley. There is no chance Baylor will repeat that run.

Well, maybe not. Pressley was special. But we'll see. I don't think it will be this year's team, that's for sure. Too young.

Elite 8s and Final Fours are no joke. Especially when you have so many of those 8 slots taken up with an annual reservation by
programs like Texas, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Stanford, and now I guess maybe Louisville. Maybe even Penn State can get back there based on their portal recruiting this year.

I don't think Baylor is about to emerge as a program at that level, but I do think they can be at a level just below that consistently.

Watching the Texas and Baylor match and Texas isn’t going to be challenged in the Big 12.

I hope they schedule a tough nonconference schedule.

Both BYU and UH will beef up the conference a bit. UCF has been good lately, but they just lost their version of Pressley, McKenna Melville, after she'd been there for 5 years, so they're going to have a drop off.

The Big 12 is actually going to be a pretty competitive conference once Texas leaves.

Last year was special...

This upcoming season is going to be a huge work in progress.

Ellas is going to be an inconsistent freshman, Wenaas is not a terminal OH, Molly still can't put down an out-of-system ball, and Bella is average at best.

My expectations have been lowered.

If you haven't watched any AU play over the last couple of years, you should know just how good they are.  It's ridiculous watching them play one another.  Haven't seen them on ESPN lately so I'm assuming their numbers weren't great, which I get, but if you are a VB nerd, it's good shit.

Well, when we say a work in progress, it’s all relative. Texas is still going to be a consensus top 5 preseason pick. They’ll still be the overwhelming favorites to win another Big 12 titie. Anything less than one of the top 8 seeds will be a disappointment.

I don’t foresee them being the top overall seed, but I do think they have an outside shot at hosting a regional depending on how the non conference season goes. It’s also going to be helpful adding BYU and UH as conference foes. Both of them are fielding Sweet 16 type squads this year, along with Baylor.

But yeah, last year was a juggernaut. On the other hand, anything short of a national championship was going to be a disappointment last year, whereas this year an Elite Eight appearance would be good.

I’m excited to see how the pieces come together. We still have Carissa Barnes reporting in the summer, and who knows what might happen during the May portal period.

But yeah. This isn’t gojng to be another one loss season, that’s for sure.

BTW, AAS’s Danny Davis will no longer be covering women’s volleyball. Thomas Jones now has those duties. Don’t know how anyone else feels about it, but it’s a huge personal disappointment to me. I loved the way Danny covered the team. I’m going to miss him being on the beat.

Dang that sucks. Just volleyball? I enjoy Danny’s coverage of softball and WBB

Thomas Jones officially started on the UT beat this week. Jones will cover the football team for the American-Statesman alongside Danny Davis, Kirk Bohls and Cedric Golden. He will also lead the American-Statesman's coverage of the men's basketball, volleyball, softball and soccer programs at Texas.”

I guess Danny might still cover women’s Basketball.

The A&M-CC match is an exhibition. Similar to Rice last year. Interesting since I fully expect Carissa Barnes to be playing. Not that it would be an issue. Maybe very mildly interesting is more accurate.

I think that Wazzu match is super interesting. They're going to have a really good team this year. Could be the 2nd or 3rd best opponent on the schedule after Stanford, with Minnesota, BYU, and UH as contenders, too. Stanford didn't lose anyone, so they're loaded.

Abby Vanderwal commits to Texas. Rated as the #2 outside hitter in the class of 2025. Rumored to be a strong lean to Wisconsin or Minnesota, she was invited to the recent Texas elite camp and that's all she wrote.

Texas is also the prohibitive favorite for the #1 outside hitter in Macaria Spears, and allegedly has a shot at the #3 outside hitter, Kaci Damaria. I don't understand how we have room, or how you convince the top 3 outside hitters in a single class to sign with the same program, but I want to believe.

Here are some comments a non Texas fan who follows the volleyball club scene used to describe her prior to her commitment:

"Seen this kid on the other side of the net a ton the past 3 years. Consistently will put her team on her back and terminate when everyone knows shes getting set the ball. Doesn’t have any other elite players around her to take the focus of the defense away from her.  All solid, but none elite.  Wants the ball in the biggest moments.  Does everything well a 6 rotation outside needs to + Has an elite arm.  In a class that has many elite players at the OH position, she sits #1 imo. "

In sad panda news, the setter Texas seemed to be targeting for this class, Campbell Flynn, committed to Nebraska. I don't know who Texas is going after, but there are names being thrown around. I'm also unclear on who they'd sign as a middle blocker. Or where they'd get all the scholarship room.
