2020 Democratic Nominee

The 15 judge court idea is really stupid and undemocratic. If he still talks about it, he should stop.

The endless whining about Twitter from center-right guys is just pathetic. Why do you people care about Twitter so much? Are you desperate for the approval of the cool kids but they just laugh at you?

It makes you look so insecure.

twitter is where much of the political discourse is happening.

it also creates an unfortunate echo chamber for like-minded people who get confused when they realize the real world is not twitter.

we're lucky we have surly.

You can say that all you want but it won't matter to working class folks in swing states that have a job and a 401K.  If Bernie wins the nomination and the economy hasn't hit a bad recession, all Trump will have to do is tweet and scream "Socialist" over and over, probably in the context of Venezuela (your average voter isn't going to be bothered by any socialism nuances) and he probably wins in a landslide.   "Woke Twitter" may love Bernie but that won't win him the election.  I mean wasn't it Clinton that won with "It's the economy, stupid"?  Some things never change.

What won't matter?  People not voting in swing states because their preferrred Dem didn't get the nomination?  I'd say that matters a fuck ton.

lol imagine voting for Tom Steyer and thinking you're taking some bold swipe at fascist corruption

Tom Steyer, Bloomberg, the homeless guy on the corner, or the person I hit with a dart I throw out the window would be a better option than the dotard.  Warren has my vote, but if she doesn't get the nomination, I'm not about to not vote.  Even though I'm in Texas and in all likelihood my vote literally doesn't matter, I will be able to say I did what I could.

If you don't vote as some sort of protest and he gets re-elected, you are complicit, regardless of what state you are in.  Anyone that is aware of what's happening and doesn't vote is a bad citizen and complicit.

Pete's the only one that talks about SC reform and still discusses it. Remember the Twitter hysterics over his Justice Kennedy comments a couple of months ago?   It's not a part of his stump speech, and for good reason since it's complicated and takes a lot of time to explain. If he's asked about it, he's happy to continue talking about it.

Warren and Bernie are not "doing the same thing.". Please direct me to any comments they've made about SC reform.  In fact, the 15 judge court idea that Pete has thrown out there was introduced/written by a big time Warren advisor (Pete went to Harvard with the guy and they are still friends).  Warren and Pete want to abolish the filibuster, Bernie doesn't. Pete has talked about getting rid of the electoral college more than any other candidate.

I haven't heard him discuss SC reform lately and no, I don't remember the Justice Kennedy comments, so maybe I just missed it.

Warren and Bernie are talking about corruption, which to me is the number 1 issue.  Pete seems to have backed off of that, but again, maybe I just haven't given him enough time lately.

For the record, I could give a fuck about MM4A or whatever iteration they are talking about.  Until corruption is addressed, healthcare reform is a pipe dream.

I'll vote for any Democrat over Trump but I believe Bernie will not win because Trump will brand him as a Socialist and it will convince enough independents to put Trump back in.

all of this is fair.  it's an attention span issue.  not yours, ours, in general, and how the candidates react to it.

there are plenty of 45+ minute interviews or podcasts or whatever, of most candidates out there.  and in those you can really get into the nuts and bolts, the nitty-gritty if you will, of what a candidate is all about.  but unfortunately there's so much going on (politics and otherwise) that you really have to be proactive to consume it all, and who has that kind of time.

like hk said, it's not part of his stump.  he doesn't often get questions on it.  and it's not really a "voter" issue - which to me means it doesn't really contrast his views or policy ideas vs his opponents in this race - and it's not high on the chart of issues.  but i agree that it's worth discussing, and it shows his interest in structural change (along with electoral college) which is definitely something he used to bring up more.

once again, politics in general in 2018-2020 is a bit of a double-edged sword.  he came out talking in broad terms, got some attention, then got pounded with "where are the specifics?!?"  then, he released some specifics, and is dealing with "why isn't he talking about structural change" or "wait, he's not exactly who i thought he was before!" type of responses.

in a way, the same happened with warren.  when she was talking about anti-corruption and getting the big money out of politics, people got excited.  then she got pressured to answer specific questions on healthcare plans and funding, and it got her in trouble.  it's the current political landscape, and it's pretty ugly.

Right, we should run a centrist candidate again that inspires little turnout since it worked so well in 2016. I seriously cannot wait for your "why I have to vote for Trump" posts if Bernie gets the nomination.

And his “heel turn” wasn’t just his move toward the center policy wise - about the time he started gaining traction he started acting like a snarky dick.

Pete Stans will Petesplain away his policy moves to the center but I’ve yet to see much of a defense from them on his “shiny objects” and “pocket change” assholery.

I'm not a Pete Stan and won't vote for him (I'm either with Warren or Biden right now), but I agreed with him super hard on both of those things and nearly donated on the strength of "shiny objects" alone, because as much as I liked Beto for Senate I'm tired of wishcasting bullshit being treated as serious policy ideas. I couldn't decide if the mandatory national buyback idea was hopelessly naive or purely cyncical, but either was it was nonsense and should be treated as such.

But, I'm an asshole so perhaps the appeal of that line was limited. Democrats need regular liberals to win, though. We are the majority in this party.

Perhaps you should just send him the one you have pre-written for if Biden wins and save him some time.

hillary was uniquely unlikable.  amazing that her name keeps coming up (from me).

hillary losing doesn't mean that's what will always happen with a "centrist" candidate.  and if biden gets nominated and beats trump, that doesn't mean the opposite.

who knew "but hillary" would catch on so well on both sides?

You've heard of airplanes, right? You people crack me up with this shit. You also missed the larger point, which is our role in destabilizing the entire continent, including our mishandling of Venezuela, our reaction (and OAS) in the last election in Bolivia, the Bolsonaro factor in Brazil and the various issues in Columbia.

This is 57 states territory, FCHorn.

I hate Biden, but I'll vote for whoever the nominee is. This threatening of "If Bernie gets the nomination then people won't turn out" is precisely what happened in 2016 as an argument for Clinton and look what happened.

Millions of people are flying from Colombia to Bolivia?  lol.  Also, doesn't Joe support our economic warfare against Venzeula, which is killing thousands of people in that country?  If anything, I think Joe takes issue with Trump's bungling of regime change in Venezuela and his failure to bring our puppet into power there.

Hi yes, let me introduce you to the modern GOP party. Any democratic candidate is going to be "uniquely unlikable" for whatever reason. Leftists hate most of the candidates besides Bernie, big-brained market wonks hate Bernie and somewhat Warren, etc. The electability argument is the absolute last thing we need to worry about, it's time to stop being cowards and worrying about everyone else but yourself.

Nope, it will be "why I have to vote for (insert 3rd party or independent candidate)" if Bernie or Warren got the nomination.

Too bad, glad that people who want radical change to help the most need and vulnerable are somehow worse than putting kids in cages.

Seriously I know you think they're going to somehow bring the world crumbling down, but it's insane that people who aren't supportive of hyper unfettered capitalism are equivalent to Trump who has only helped completely exacerbate the growing inequality in this country.

I just happen to think the "radical change" they propose would destroy the economy with a sky rocketing unemployment rate vastly increasing the "vulnerable" who need the most help.   Not that either would actually accomplish any of their platform.  I've said it before but there is a lot that could actually get done bi-partisan with the right candidate (gun control, climate change, etc.) but my prediction all along has been the D's f'n this thing up and still pretty convinced that is the outcome.  At this point I'm hoping a clearly soon to be senile Biden can somehow pull it off and surround himself with smart people.

lol that is so preposterous.  it would be one thing to make that argument if we weren't already operating as a Keynesian political economy, but we already are, it's just designed so that the vast majority of people don't get to reap the rewards.

You seriously think the trajectory we were on under Obama, GWB, or even Clinton was actually helping poor people? How many graphs if the wealth accumulated under the top 1% or how wages have been stagnant do we need to show you?

Is it wrong that I don't give a rat's ass about Hillary Clinton other than I hope see enjoys spending time with her daughter on their book tour? I really don't care about her politics in the sense that she is not a candidate, she is not Secretary of State and I am looking at the people who are running not named Trump. I do not care about Trump and my 401k or my 409K or my 911K. He could have been a cabbage in 2016 and the economy probably would have resulted in the gains I had. So let's move on and get going. The middle class is shrinking, the income disparity is widening, and the US is not a welcoming example of democracy, it is a scared angry Gollum clinging to its precioussssss idea of an America that never existed for many classes of its citizens. If that means I lose a little, easy come easy go, but I'm willing to take that chance to get tRump and his cultists out of office.

It's amazing how many people will unthinkingly parrot lies told by rich people who don't give a shit about them and have been actively stealing from them for decades (even leaving out the question of surplus value).

I'm very privileged because of my race, upbringing, and how those enabled me to save and pivot to software where I make probably way too much money for the amount of work I perform. Would absolutely not mind paying more in taxes for universal healthcare, much better and more equal access in primary education, large scale public transit, etc. I know lots of people my age who think similarly, and unsurprisingly meet older people who think that is somehow actual communism.

We can hem and haw about the ramifications of more robust social systems and the welfare state, but these ideas are only becoming more popular with millennials and zoomers. I do see this becoming something the US shifts towards even if Biden wins in 2020 and every non-woke Twitter leftist thinks we've somehow returned to normalcy.

The crazy thing is that the Bernie voters did turn out. Bernie voted for Trump at a lower rate than Clinton primary voters flipped to McCain in 08.  Hillary just did't have enough enthusiasm, because she's bad at politics and always has been. She had no business running for president, let alone keeping more promising candidates at the time (like Warren) out.

I'm not going to argue that and really feel like we'll see the same things repeat if Biden wins the nomination.
