This is high risk high reward. It could work out or it could be a disaster like Akina was.

We could get back to a top 8 defense like PK had for 3 years or we could have the floor drop out.  It's about 50/50 which happens

That is also the type of defense we will be getting next year, everybody remembers the 09 Big XII championship game, but forget the game before it.

I still remember people praising that run defense when the average was deceptive with lots of TFLs and sacks. Ultimately the goal was to prevent scoring not have gaudy stats. Even if I still think PK was too conservative but last year they were dialed in.

We will see how it works out. Could just be a nostalgia adrenaline rush like Akina or a true improvement to the defense.  What would help the defense no matter who the DC is an offense that can stay in the field and run the football.

Love the intensity that Muschamp will bring but if the reports are true that Sark is counting on him to light fire to assess he hasn’t learned much from last year.  No amount of heat from his assistants will make up for him looking like a sad puppy on the sidelines. The intensity and fire needs to start with him.  Maybe he’s turned a new leaf.

With all the rumors this past year of Sark getting fired it’s interesting I haven’t heard any speculation that the hire is a potential exit strategy with Will stepping in as HC if needed.

Yeah. There are some damn fine non-alcoholic beers nowadays, and there have always been great NA wines (aka high end grape juice), but everything I read about NA liquor is... they just seem gross.

Non-alcoholic beer is like going down on your cousin. Sure it tastes the same... but that shit just ain't right.

Will Muschamp is not a “high risk” at defensive coordinator. PK was really good at Texas but Muschamp is an elite defensive coordinator.

This is something to save. His evaluations at Texas were dog shit. He’s a relic that has Sark’s number.

A relic? He's still easily one of the greatest defensive minds, even today. Yes, I agree his LB evaluations were shit, which is why we have Nansen. Muschamp won't even make a dent in that dept. Anyway, the guy is a fucking legend, has been in the SEC since 2011, and knows the league inside and out, front to back, top to bottom. If anyone is helping us beat Georgia, it's him. He was one of the reasons for their 2021/2022 NC wins. He got there in 2021, then they magically just fucking destroy everyone. So from 2021-2025 he's been with Georgia in some capacity. That's on defense. Hence why their defense is almost unstoppable when you have both Kirby and Mischamp.

If I recall, Muschamp was making some terrible LB evaluations towards the end of his tenure.  We need the scouting department to help with evaluations.  Muschamp was a hell of a recruiter back in the day.  Hopefully he still is, but we might want to double check who he wants to recruit.

He was a good recruiter in the beginning, but his last year was absolute dog shit. Regardless, he was here from 2008-2010 and every year our D was top 10. He has a pretty good list of recruits he's landed

- Byron Cowart five-star (2018)

- Jordan Hicks five-star (2008)

- Malaki Starks five-star (2022)

- Marvin Jones, Jr five-star (2021)

- Jaheim Singleterry five-star (2023)

- Jalon Walker five-star (2021)

- Demello Jones high four-star (2024)

There are several more, but I just picked more recent ones to show he can still recruit.

I spent 2 years in college waiting tables at Pappasito’s. If you think for a second that just saying the word “fajitas” and that being that for the order is a thing, you are getting mocked and laughed at in the restaurant kitchen by your server and his/her friends after attempting it. I imagine you are a running gag for any server waiting on you, but this would add to it.

I had a guy insist one time on ordering only “fajitas” and he told me to educate myself when I asked for clarity. I got written up when he complained about initially receiving vegetable fajitas as his entree. It was worth it.

You should really branch out to other sub forums here. But shrimp fajitas are legit!!!!

Will Muschamp thoughts, Jadan Baugh and recruiting

What a day on the Forty Acres Thursday. One of the very best pure coaches on a side of the ball that has ever donned the burnt orange and white has returned to Austin. Make no mistake, this was a very good day for Texas football.

My thoughts this morning will start there. And I'll also hit on Jadan Baugh and a couple of recruiting thoughts.

Thoughts on Will Muschamp ...
First off, I met Will Muschamp in 2008 shortly after he was hired at Texas. To say I'm a fan of his as a defensive coach would be an understatement. And pure coach in general.

As the son of a Texas high school football coach of 40 years, being around coaches on the high school and college level in football and basketball my entire life, Will Muschamp has the characteristics I'm drawn to. Of course Muschamp is an excellent X's and O's coach. He's got multiple National Championship rings, and was the DC of Nick Saban's first NC at LSU. Saban was such a fan, Muschamp went to the Miami Dolphins as the associate head coach and DC. He's been very successful as a DC at every stop. And in recent years he return to Athens to help get Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs over the top with his former college roommate Smart. For those that don't know, Muchamp, Smart and Mike Bobo were all college roommates at Georgia.

What I absolutely love about Muschamp as a coach and person begins before an install, video breakdown, play call or scheme. It's the intensity, the passionate communication, the non-stop motor, a fire that burns constantly, the way he challenges his defensive players to bring the best out of them, the demand for physicality, the demand to be detail oriented of his players which creates discipline. Does that mean Texas will be No. 1 in defense next year and never commit a penalty? Of course not, this is a sport in which chasing perfection is extremely difficult to attain. But the Texas defense will bring what is needed from a mentality and physicality stand point to have the possibility to take the next step.

Colin Simmons final season on the Forty Acres will be maximized. Always health related in sports, Texas may well have the best pass rush team in my years covering Texas or being in this business.

Can't wait to see how Texas puts the pieces together in the portal to give Muschamp the best parts possible for 2026.

Back to Flood:  Say the role does become open who would you nominate as the next OL coach?

15 years ago I was screaming bloody murder to try and lure Juan Castillo, he was great then, not so much now.

But now?  I'd nominate this guy.

Sherrone Moore is available. He got skins on the wall too.

I'm sure he was helpful to Georgia,  but he wasn't the sole DC running the show there. The last time he did it here my youngest kid was 2 to 3 years old. By the time Muschamp coaches his first game back here she'll be in college.

The only time he's been the lone DC aince then was 1 season at Auburn in 2015. Their defense improved from 2014, but still got run on a lot, and gave up a lot of points.

Shit changes over that much time since he's been here. It's high risk.

Holy shit. He was never the biggest dude, but he looks more like a former receiver than OL.

Tim Drevno, hands down. Give him the keys and stop fucking around. Let him recruit his own guys since he actually recruits 4-5* guys and then fills in the rest appropriately. Dude worked for Harbaugh at Stanford, Michigan, and he worked with Ohio State last year with their line.

I feel like that's not unusual for an OL to stop playing and then shed a ton of weight.

Especially in this day and age

And yet the year he got there and he was promoted to co-DC, they just happened to win the NC twice. I would say getting them over the hump is pretty solid work. They have only missed the CFP once in 5 seasons.

This thread is a dumpster fire. How much worse can the football board be?

Correlation does not mean causation. Too many variables,  like the actual players, change year to year.

Especially when Muschamp was only hired as an analyst then moved to special teams coordinator for the 2021 season. Saying he fixed their defense to NC level is like saying Banks made our defense playoffs level in 2023 and 2024.

I choose to believe we are simply waiting for the new OL coach to be done with the playoffs

This is my belief - either playoffs or another bowl. And the fact that Sark doesn't want to go into the Citrus Bowl down 4 coaches (or more).

Juluke was easy to bring on board pretty quickly, since Florida went through a coaching change and no bowl game.

If the rumors are true (or implied), PK wanted to stay through the bowl game, but Muschamp was available to come in now and start evaluating players in bowl practices, and PK would have just had an extra 2 weeks to try and poach players to USC (or Oregon, or whatever west coast school he ends up)

Not really the same considering Mischamp is actually a defensive genius, and Banks isn't even average at his position. We don't know what happened with Georgia, but I would say it's more likely than not he helped get them over the hump, especially when you have four eyes and each can diagnose. Muschamp is built different.

I'm not saying people should just be happy, but at least we aren't hiring a Chad Scott, Mark Orphey, or Akina or just sitting on our hands. We have an elite DC who wants to come back to Austin in a league he knows front to back. If nothing else, he's going to get us over the Kirby hump.

It's not just that it's an elite DC who knows the league front and back, it's a DC Sark wanted from day 1 and almost got.  (Thanks a lot, Mrs. Muschamp)

I've said it several times the last few years, but I could just never get over the fact we paid our defensive coordinator $2+ million a year and he could apparently only coordinate half the defense. Sure, the end results were good in about 3.5 of the 5 years, but to even have the conversation that our top 3 paid DC required some special position coach in order to fully function was getting tiring.
