*mother goose you pussy

The cool thing about being a beginner (at just about anything) is you suck so bad (sry) that ANY program, rep range, etc gets you #gainz.  Just gotta stay with it.

And no excuses.  If it's back to leg night and you're still sore, don't just skip the gym entirely.  Swap the squats for light cardio.  Or just stretch. Hold yourself to account.  To do something.  To make yourself better.   Today.

Goddammit I had “mother goose, you pussy” then second guessed myself.

oh and I’ve added protein powder, creatine, glucosamine / chondroitin, and collagen peptides (powder) to my daily regimen to make sure my muscles and joints have what they need.

50+ is no joke, but you can still athlete the fuck out of sports and the gym if you go slooooow, listen to your body and care and feed it right.

Appreciate all the tips. I was Olympic lifting pretty heavy with a trainer up until about six years ago and haven’t really done shit since. I lost 70 lbs over the last year and need to put the muscle back. I started this week and three sets of ten pushups wasn’t too bad, but I need more stuff, especially core and legs. Pickle ball season starts back up this week and I’ve already had one torn calf in the last year or two that sidelined me for a couple months. Don’t need that bullshit again.

PB is awesome and training so you can play better without injury is a perfect combo. good luck!

Back when I was young and spend time on the muscle and fitness-type web boards, the quote was, "Stronger than someone 10# heavier, faster than someone 10# lighter."  Now we should add, "...than someone 10 years younger."

If you want to start at the very bottom, do 10 pushups, 10 situps, 10 air squats, 5x a day.  Gradually move those numbers up to 12, 15, 20.  Google body weight exercises and start mixing in the ones you like.  In no time at all, you'll have a nice little routine going.

I think I mentioned it upthread, but my current routine is next to nothing, but it's helped a ton.

60 second Yogi Squat - I've learned to love these.  After you get them down, you can really feel all the different muscles, and especially your back posture
60 second plank
20 pushups - I've started to change hand positions each round just to make sure I'm getting all areas of chest
20 air squats - I try and focus on dropping my ass directly over my heels and using my glutes to stand back up as opposed to my quads

Like, that's pretty much nothing, but 5x a day adds up.  Honestly, my chest hasn't looked this good since I was lifting regularly 20+ years ago.  Not huge or anything, but at least somewhat defined now. Triceps are popping too - I really need to start doing some chin ups for my biceps.

This. I've had more than a few people ask me about weight training that were up there in years. I always default with start with body weight exercises and until the body develops strength, then move on. I am biased, so I push compound lifting once they achieve a certain amount of strength from body weight exercises.

I also recommend they start walking daily. Just walk and expand your distance and pace until you can jog.
