Regardless of the win against OU, we’re just not very good. Our OL will not get fixed this year. Our skill positions are lackluster. Our QB is green.

And even though our defense is solid, our pass rush still isn’t what we thought it would be.

I expect every game from here on out to be a slog. My hope is that this stretch helps Manning continue to develop, because I have little to no expectation of beating Georgia with this team.

We have some dogs on defense. Who are the dogs on offense? My take is Manning, Wisner, and believe it or not, Brooks. Deandre may have that in him too, but unfortunately some of our dogs are also inexperienced.

I agree that we will some things culture-wise in this game, because they know their backs are against the wall now.

I think there are some reasons for optimism as far as struggling units improving over the back half of the season.

I don’t expect us to be contending for the Joe Moore award by the end of the season, but replacing Stroh with Brooks potentially has a big domino effect. If he grows into the role, Arch and the RBs should be able to be more effective, which creates an opportunity for better chemistry with the WRs, and the whole offense looks better as they build confidence.

It’s not a foregone conclusion though. And the team could lose any/every game left on the schedule where they show up like they did for the Florida game. I think the fact that our margin for error is gone should decrease the likelihood of us showing up that way in any of the remaining games, but it’s not eliminated.

We're not a bad team, good lord. We're an awful team.

We should beat Kentucky because their QB is horribad. He's worse than Jackson Arnold as a passer, and runs slower than Mangino and Elko in a race through the Sahara. He's thrown 4 TDs to 3 INTs.  All this team has to do is shut down McGowan and year three of different universities Dowdell. Not a single WR has crossed the 174 as a catcher.

They're 66th in defensive rate with 2.24 points per drive.

We actually have a defense worth a shit, and if Stoops goes full Stoops, which I fully expect, he'll add another 2-3 INTs, or even more. Muhammad, Taaffe, or Littleton should get 1-2.

I don't care if Arch has a hand like Jim Abbott, he's still throwing for 300 and at minimum 2 TDs, and Wisner will add at least 1-2 more. This is our layup.

Something I've been mulling over and am interested to hear what y'all think.

How we play this week is going to tell me a lot about the culture of the program today and in the near future. There are very few of the 2022 class left on the roster (Campbell, Hutson and Taaffe are the only starters that immediately come to mind), and most of our leaders are from 2023. The 2023 class has not seen the kind of adversity we experienced in 2021 or even 2022.

My lingering concern is this - we have always gotten up for the RRSO. Even bad Texas teams have played above their heads in that game, and good Texas teams tend to be at their best. We are supremely motivated for the RRSO. But where Herman, Strong, and some late-stage Mack teams struggled was getting motivated for the other games. The ones we didn't take seriously. When I hear people talk about a "country club" attitude at Texas, that is what I think of. Us playing down to our opponent because we don't care as much as they do. Since 2022, we really haven't played like that in any game. At least not against a real opponent (I don't count G5 non-cons when we're working on install or getting over injuries). In the real games, even when we lost, I could see that the guys were trying. They just couldn't execute when we needed to. The defense has been especially consistent from game to game.

So for the first time since 2021, I saw us act like we weren't properly motivated against Florida. Just lacking the requisite energy and propensity for violence. The only player who seemed to have the level of fight required was Manning. I'm not saying they didn't care about Florida, but that they looked incredibly flat. Like they were showing up for a job and not a fight. But then we came to Dallas looking for a fight, and showed what we can do when we are ready to inflict pain on our opponents. Especially for the defense, but also the offense in the second half.

I'm not being pessimistic, because I think we show up in Lexington ready for a fight, and I think we will whip Kentucky's ass. But I want to see it, because it will tell me a lot about the attitude of this team. I want to see if the leaders in the 2023 class have got the same level of fight as the guys who came before them, and who learned the hard lessons of 2021 and 2022. If we see this team come out properly motivated, then that bodes well. Not just for this season, but for the foreseeable future. Because that tells me that the culture under Sark wasn't just created by adversity, but can also be handed down from class to class. That the culture is portable and isn't specific to individuals, which was far too often the case over the previous decade.

I wouldn't have worried about this before the Florida game, but here we are. To me, this game will show a lot about what the culture will be for Texas going forward. Even if the game is a slog, as long as we look fired up then I think we're set up for the long term.

tl;dr - this is a culture game, and will tell us a lot more about this season and the trajectory of the program than the RRSO did.

This is where I’m at.  I actually told my wife pre-RRS that I wanted to see some fight out of this team if I’m gonna believe.  Then the pregame scuffle happened and I knew we were golden.  But now we gotta see it with consistency.  We’re too young and not developed enough to cruise by SEC opponents without the appropriate spirit and effort.

I think this is a national championship caliber team and we saw them really put together one of the better halves of football in a long time Saturday. This group seems like when it clicks its gonna be a lot of fun and if seems like that's happening now. Wisner is gaining confidence and seeing more of the field. Arch is really growing. The OL looked a whole lot better and wasn't bad, still a much higher ceiling. TE room looks awesome and is both blocking and producing fine. The IDL is still the only real weakness.

I want to see them shut Kentucky out at home and score at least 3 touchdowns. That would make papa very happy.

That's a lot of words to just say "They are terrible, we should win convincingly"

The point isn't that we'll lose or that we'll even play poorly. I'm not worried about losing. I'm worried that we'll sleepwalk into this game and, even though we win, it won't be a good sign.

Just want to see the offense put up like 27+. I think the offense started to get some confidence vs OU. They have to build on it.

Kentucky is a bad team. But this team needs to find its focus that will last for the rest of the season.
Playing to a standard is a good first step and I’d love to see the defense be the flag bearing side who then lights a fire in the offense to match their level of intensity and execution.

I mean…come on. You were at the Swamp just like I was, when we got physically dominated on both sides of the ball by a bad football team. We might be national championship caliber on one side of the ball, but we are decidedly not on the other.

The weaknesses extend well beyond our IDL. Could we develop into a national championship caliber team this year? No, I don’t think so. I would love to be wrong, but there’s too much to fix in too little time.

I just want to see us improve game by game to hopefully set us up for next year.

I'm seeing a lot of bullshit about "confidence" and "attitude" (and even "talent") when our offense's issues this year have always been about *skill.*

They got physically dominated. On both lines.

Florida had 417 yards of offense.

They had 183 yards rushing. We had 74.

They had six sacks. We had zero.

They physically dominated us.

On the Injury Report Tonight… (Wednesday noon)

CJ Vogel

By CJ Vogel

OTF is expecting to see a name of a Texas starter mentioned on the SEC Availability Report Wednesday evening.

This starter is not CJ Baxter and this would be the first mention on the availability report this season.

The status of the player is unknown just yet. OTF will withhold the name until this evening when the injury report is released.

Goosby? Campbell? Wilson? Who else got hurt against OU?

I rewatched it very closely. They missed big assignments and the majority of the time the pressures were coming from completely untouched defenders. They didn't get in because they were so fucking fast they couldn't touch them and they didn't shed them. It was completely protection scheme related. Engaged lineman were not getting physically handled or dominated

This team played with Ohio State the best team in the country right now and wasn't mismatched. Just because you want to talk shit doesn't mean you have fucking eyes or know what the fuck you are talking about.

Are we just completely discounting the facts that Florida has plenty of talented athletes and was playing with their hair on fire to try and save their head coach's job?

Maybe the distinction is that we weren’t physically outmatched, but were physically dominated because we apparently thought we could get through that one coasting on bare minimum, just going-through-the-motions effort?

This.  We went blow for blow with Ohio state but to say Florida didn’t out physical us is ridiculous.

It was a physical game and Florida has great lines, I dont think Texas got dominated live or on the rewatch and no one has said as much from any pundits. They all agree the OL sucked. It did. The DL sucked especially the IDL, but to eat that this team is going to struggle against Georgia or TAMU is just nonsense. They just had a dominant performance where there were plenty of pancakes this week.

They definitely didn’t match floridas physicality on either side of the ball.  Not saying they couldn’t have or it’s impossible to but they got whipped in that game.  No doubt about it.

Dude we got buttfucked in the trenches against Florida. I watched the tape many times. It was so bad I felt like it was at least partially an aberration and that we would rebound, and we did. I picked us to beat OU. But our O Line got destroyed, and our D line got neutralized.

We would have beaten Florida if our o line performance was marginally better. We are good, Florida is not. I dont think our performance there is who we are, but I think what happened is what happened. My guess is Sark took the attitude of we are the thermostat and not the thermometer, and he didnt change anything leading up to the Florida game. We get smoked on the lines, he makes the adjustments, and we play much better against OU. But thats a capitulation of the team identity, we choose what happens.

My entire argument is this is a national championship caliber team and was met with we can't even play Florida. It's not hopeless. This team is scary as fuck when they are on.

Right, and I'm in agreement regarding Georgia and aggy, but that's just a red herring looking away from what Danny Rolling, er I mean the Billy Napier dd to us. It's irrelevant about what we did right or wrong (keeping Stroh in/replacing him with Brooks down 3 scores), we got abused and gutted. Lagway made our DBs look below average, and ran the ball at will. It wasn't a talent issue, it wss a scheming issue, but at the end of the day a complete beating by an inept team is what it is. Do you think any of us want to acknowledge we lost to Billy Napier? Sark or PK? Fuck no. But it happened, and we have to kearn from it. It's not like they were Appalachian State or something, they have plenty of talent. They dumbed down the playbook and got not one, but TWO freshman WRs heavily involved, and they took us behind the woodshed.

If Sark has neurons firing per every 15 secs, he should take notes to get OUR talented WRs, TE, etc, other than that 1 pass to McCutcheon, involved to mismatch against other teams. He's making it harder than it should be. He can run an NFL-like organization without all of the difficult bullshit these kids need to learn, which clearly is a problem, especially in the redzone.

I'm trying to think of a single Big 12 away game better than Lexington.

Only thing I have is Arizona/Utah to even compete and of course that never applied to us.

Keeneland as a tailgating spot and precursor to the game is so good. I hope as many Texas fans make it out there as possible because they will definitely want to go back. Thats a very elite Saturday.

It's a fun place to go drink and dance. Kinda cramped but charming.

It would not be a good gathering spot, though. Fun bar but not well suited for a gathering spot. If you aren't dancing them people mostly sit outside in the parking lot because of how small it is. It's also on Burnet so parking can be a bitch.

I will say that I haven’t been very impressed with our blitzes. We haven’t been very good at getting opposing OLs to miss assignments. But we still have some great individual pass rushers (Simmons and Spence especially).
