Ah man, that sucks. I personally think he needs another year, and he was just coming on at the right time, too. That sucks. I guess we do need a portal TE. Damn. I love that position.

Didn’t take long for certain members of this fanbase to start SEC’ing themselves with some of these takes on scheduling and the season. You can’t lose to FL (not even counting OT against MSU and KY) and make some of these arguments with a straight face.

MFs with college degrees will be out here telling you that a 3 win Florida team would beat any Big 12 or ACC team with a straight face. It's just straight lunacy, aggy level cult mentality.

Would Texas have lost to Florida if they'd benched Stroh and moved Hutson to Guard? If Malik Muhamad was available to prevent Dallas Wilson from racking up 100+ yard receiving and 2 TDs? I doubt it. if we're going to nitpick the win against OU because of Mateer's health we also should be willing to nitpick the loss at Florida.

But you don't need to do any of that because deep down everyone knows that no matter what the records say, as of November 30, the Texas Longhorns are a better team than, and would beat (and in the case of three of them, have already beaten) most of the 13 teams the Coaches and AP have ranked ahead of them

Would Tech and UGA absolutely destroying BYU and Bama respectfully give us a shot and send them out of contention?

If so I guess I need to root for Tech and UGA and immediately take a shower and scrub myself with a wire brush to get the yuck off after their games.

We put a garbage time TD up to make the score look closer. They were up by 14 into the 56th minute

I'd hardly call that "garbage time", considering we put it in in the 56th minute, then held them, and got the ball back with about 2:30 to go.  We drove to the 50 where things fizzled out.  You could say they controlled the game, but it was anything but "garbage time".  Garbage time scores are what we let Arky have after being up 30.

It's probably a moot point though, because BYU doesn't beat us.

Look, I think Tech is a good squad. I think they are top 10. Yall better not lose that game. I’m not saying that losing it knocks you out but you don’t want to get into a pissing match with 10-2 Domers or 10-2 OU or 10-3 Bama for who gets the last couple spots. There’s a very real chance it might not be you (or it might be). You should probably make sure you win that game, or at a minimum show up and play/look good like a playoff team should.

I'm not concerned about it. It's funny, because all the Big 12 talking heads are practically begging us to throw the game to try and get 2 Big 12 teams in, as if we would ever even consider such a stupid notion.

I mean- they won 4 games. And they just buttfucked their rival in the ACC. They played the hardest schedule in the country by a fair bit, and had some shot go against them. They beat us and had Georgia fucking shitting themselves u til ref fuckery out an end to that game. They absolutely could beat anyone in the ACC or Big 12.
I think Tech is better than them, Miami is better then them but I’d take a coin flip game against Utah or BYU and I’d have them slight favorites over Pitt and Louisville.
There’s a reason the computers have them like 40 even at 4-8. That reason isn’t because they suck.

Do we know this for sure?  I mean this is the committee who said challenging OOC games would be weighed against the balance of the rest of the schedule now apprearing to poop on the whole idea now.

I can see if it’S a close loss in a CCG.  If BYU and Bama get their asses kicked, how is that going to look?

The problem is and always has been the polls - the rankings to the left of each team should not yet exist - but they make great talking points and fodder for television ratings

This should be the order of SEC teams chosen for the CFP and there should be a limit on number of teams chosen.

The SEC already had a playoff and this is the result

The CFP is not and should not be the SEC invitational tournament

The CFP committee’s lone job should be ranking/seeding said teams relative to the other conferences

By what possible metric are you making this claim?

Well, for starters, Texas has already beaten three of the 13. Who's left?

Indiana, let's call that one a wash. (Personally I think we smoke them)

Oregon, let's call that a wash, too. (Same)

Texas Tech, I have no doubt we would crush them, and Vegas would agree. Lubbock, Jerryworld, it don't make a shit. Texas by 20+

(Wh)ole Mess, call it a wash.

Notre Dame, we have a stronger record against common opponents (2-0 vs. 1-1)

Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State, I'll concede they'd be favored.

BYU? We would be favored by two scores.

Miami? We would be favored as well.

Do you think anything I just said is outlandish?

The different iterations of the playoff system required different scheduling strategies. The goalposts keep moving.  In the past, having a strong OOC win was an important data point that could mean the difference bw in or out. A loss in a game like that, along with an undefeated or at most one-loss conference record meant you could still get in. So the cost/benefit made sense. Now, with the expanded field and auto bid situation, it no longer does. In hindsight, the tOSU was the difference bw being in or out, all else remaining the same.

The playoff system for college football is absurd, and always has been. When the system was created, with polls and bowls, less money at stake and all the rest no one foresaw where it was going to go. Change has been slow and difficult, all because of money and the relative power of everyone at the trough.  The point of the playoff has never been about what is best for the fans, certainly, or the teams - players and coaches - but the institutions with the most power, the TV networks, the schools and conferences.

From an organizational standpoint, the P4 and G5 should be separate divisions. I have no fucking idea why the G5 has an iota of leverage to give them a guaranteed spot other than pure charity. It's total bullshit. They have no chance at a title and absolutely don't belong.  The P4 need to just take over college football entirely and officially from the NCAA. It's already slowly mostly happened. The conferences need to realign into 8 or 10 team divisions that are roughly equal. With 8, top two from each division make the 16 team playoff.  Conferences cease to exist.  CCGs cease to exist.  With roughly 64 teams and a robust set of scheduling rules we would have more higher quality games in the regular season.  The patty-cake games should go away altogether.

The above scenario would probably result in higher revenue.  The new Division two would have their own playoffs and a legit chance for a national championship those schools have never had.

All of this said, it would require some entities with power to give it up so it will probably never happen.  Also, the chaos and madness is part of what I hate and love most about CFB. So in the end the excitement, intrigue and distraction value is probably a wash.

Gotcha. Because you should be concerned if it’s an 11-2beauty pageant. I think yall are really good and BYU isn’t, so I get where you are coming from but the ball can bounce a funny way.

Tech would be out. Their SOS is terrible. That is not changing. They do not have a marquee win and they have a bad losses. They also lose the recognizable helmet debate favored by Disney

Because there are twelve teams, not two.

That only lessens the impact of "punishing" teams who lose their conference championship games. Sark is right that if Texas had gone to Louisville instead of Columbus there would be no debate. So would you rather "punish" teams who sign up for tough OOC competition but fail to win, or do you want to "punish" teams who make the conference championship but fail to win? Remember that if SMU had beaten Clemson, SMU probably wouldn't need to go on the road (in other words, they were "punished" with a lower seed for losing to Clemson)

It is if it's one of two.

Then don't schedule Ohio State. Problem solved.

Someone upthread said something about "unwinnable" games. That's not a thing. At Texas, every game should be winnable. Hell, a lot of people thought we could beat Ohio State. So it's not about "unwinnable" games. It's about "unlosable" games.

Anytime you schedule a home/home against a top 15 program, there's a chance to lose. Especially if it's away. Doesn't matter who it is. Ohio State coming to Austin next year, there's a chance they lose that game. That's just the reality of talent accumulation in college football.

Schedule UTRGV or New Mexico State, or LA Tech... Those games should be virtually unlosable.

If we get left out of the playoffs, the committee is saying you get 2 losses max and it doesn't matter who what when how those losses are. So give yourself the most margin for error and go undefeated in non conference. So just schedule all cupcakes, go undefeated in non conference, now you have margin for error in conference.

i mean this is from AI overview from google search lol:

  • Other relevant factors: The committee may also consider other issues, such as key player or coach unavailability that may have impacted a team's performance.

Thing that sucks is that OU, ND, and Miami all scheduled good OOC games this year. To give them credit, they went out and booked a premier team for their OOC schedule just like we did. ND is the one we should 100% pass but the committee has a hard on for them as they do every year.
