Leaving tomorrow but not without incident.

I received this in my inbox this morning.

Dear Customer,

In update to what was previously communicated, we inform you that, on June 15, the Verona – Bolzano line will be interrupted to allow the defusing activities of a war device in the localities of Verona Parona and Bivio Pc. Santa Lucia, with consequent changes to the long-distance trains.

The Frecciarossa train 8703 that you booked for 06/15/25, is cancelled on the Verona Porta Nuova - Bolzano route.

To reschedule your trip, we invite you to contact the Customer Care staff at the station and at the ticket offices as soon as possible or contact the call center at 06 3000 option 0 (active every day 24 hours a day).

Refund: if you decide to cancel your trip, you can request a full refund of the ticket, from the moment the event occurs and up to one year from the date of the event, at Trenitalia ticket offices, by calling the Call Center on 06 3000 or by filling out the online request on the following internet page:

I guess they found ordinance from WWII.

So, a simple travel day on Sunday became complicated.  The new train will arrive after the rental car agency closes which would strand us in Bolzano.  We are now doing a rental car in Milan with about a 4 hour drive to Ortisei.  The drive will be through the northern Italian countryside and the southern portion of the Dolomites so it's not a terrible change but it was still a hassle to get refunds, rebook cars from a different airport etc.  Sunday will be an adventure.

That's a pretty drive.  I would go up the west side of Lake Garda, not the east.  Better views.

Also, if you have time, this is a great place to stop for lunch near Ortisei, just after Bolzano.  Homemade pasta and beers.

My youngest sister and her husband have been living in Naples since 2023 and their oldest daughter married a guy from Castellammare di Stabia (near Pompeii).

My BIL gave our kids rides on his scooter. It has been a highlight of the trip for them. My daughter especially as she has no fear.

Lago da Braies, Dolomites

This was actually the place that got me interested in the Dolomites to begin with, but I still haven’t been there. I should remedy that.

You should. We took the cable cars to the top of Alpe de Siusi and Seceda today from Ortisei.  Spectacular.

I’ve done that twice. Fucking Sound of Music up there.

Did you get to Sorapiss?  Tough hike but stunning.

Below you'll see three pictures I took around 2014 from Seceda in Ortisei... so calm and peaceful.  It was amazing.  This was just down the valley from where I learned to ski as a kid.

Now?  this is the line to ride the cable car up.  Dude... this pisses me off to no end.  I loathe LOATHE overtourism.

Not to mention the cable car prices have gotten insane.  Maybe they've jacked up the prices to keep tourism down though clearly not working.  Probably more to make a ton of money will they can.  No Italian is paying that without having something like a Supersummer pass.

Yeah, the cable car prices were insane.

Question for Texasdago.  We are discussing Umbria and Puglia next.  Puglia looks incredible. Any insight?

It may be a few years because we are also discussing Asturias and Galicia in northwestern Spain with some Portugal mixed in.

My sister-in-law grew up in this Indianapolis house.  The architect told her parents that he always wanted to design something based on Truilli architecture, and they told him to go for it....

I've been there. We were hiking of course. No issue with crowds. The pics do not really give you the feel for all of it.

I just wanted to say that the problem with jacking prices is that you price out the locals. Also, no offense, but lots of old people in those lines.

The locals are pissed and that's why I said no Italian is paying that amount.  I mean, for Italy, 28 Euros was not cheap.  Now its absurd.

I've been in Venice during normal times. I've been in Venice during COVID. The difference is incredible. During COVID I was riding my bike down the middle of the road and there was no cars at all.

For "the readers", I was trying and mostly failed to explain the dilemma between the prosperity that vacationers bring, the general poverty of the local population, and the philosophical contradiction that creates. What I heard from a lot of people when I was there, and I totally support, is that Italy is for the Italians. There are a lot of emotions in play in the vidoe posted above.

We had no more than a 2 minute wait in the middle of June for the cable cars.
