Probably, but sooner or later boots will be on the ground to "ensure total destruction of the target" or some other such macho shit.  That's when the crazy old guys get a say.  It's not the professionals that are scary; it's the motivated, unpredictable amateurs who will get you in unexpected ways.

Or whose families are being held hostage or threatened by drug lords.

I'm sure there are some in the administration who think this is going to be like the bomb run in Patriot Games or the border scene in Siccario, but our folks will not be just a few miles from our border.

jeezus, it really looks like we're gonna go to no-kidding WAR with Venezuela?

Quote

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told a rare meeting of the most senior military leadership in the U.S. that they must "prepare for war".

"From this moment forward, the only mission of the newly restored Department of War is this: Warfighting," Hegseth said in his speech at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, referring to the name now used by the Trump administration for the Department of Defense.

"Preparing for war and preparing to win. Unrelenting and uncompromising in that pursuit. Not because we want war. No one here wants war. But it's because we love peace."

And the "Department of War" bullshit is just that - bullshit.  Only Congress can change the name.  So Trump can call it that, and Hedgehog can put new signs up around the Pentagon, but on paper it's still the DoD.

But yeah, Venezuelans are going to have to die because Epstein wrote stuff down.

And some American service members too.  Maybe not many.  But some.

For absolutely no reason.  None.  Other than Trump needing to create a distraction.

Remember how all the Trump voters said one of the great things about him was "he won't get us into any foreign wars?"  And now, he's literally looking around trying to find a fight to start?

U.S. President Donald J. Trump has called off efforts to reach a diplomatic agreement regarding combating drug trafficking and the cartels with Venezuela, paving the way for a potential military escalation against narco-terrorists or the Government of Nicolás Maduro, according to several U.S. officials who spoke with the New York Times.

Last Thursday, President Trump spoke with Richard Grenell, who is currently serving as Special Envoy for Special Missions and is leading diplomatic efforts with the Maduro Regime in Venezuela, instructing him that all diplomatic outreach, including his talks with Mr. Maduro, were to immediately stop, as tensions have grown recently between Grenell and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Officials state that the Trump Administration has drawn up multiple military plans for an escalation with Venezuela, with those operations possibly including plans designed to force Maduro from power, over claims that his government is actively directing and supporting drug cartels operating in Venezuela against the United States.

Well you see Venezuela’s big mistake is having oil relatively close to the US.

We have to go down there and show those bastards that hoarding natural resources in the Western hemisphere is just not allowed.

I think he believes it will be like Panama or Grenada.

It's scary because he really needs a distraction after he keeps getting embarrassed at home and with the shutdown starting to fuck things up (the last 3 shutdowns were under him). He really wants other nations to fear him, all the while he doesn't realize that Europe and China are starting to replace us on the world stage.

This is what the real problem is (not the oil, although that will come into play) - it's in our backyard.

I'm putting it at pretty good odds that we do something serious in the next few weeks.

It's going to drive a lot of countries right into the arms of BRIC.

Remember how much he enjoyed ordering that Iranian general killed in Iraq.  And how much he enjoyed ordering the bombing of Iran. Maduro better be hiding.

If we start taking out heads of state -- even ones we think are pieces of shit and almost certainly illegitimate -- well, we pissed away a lot of goodwill over the past 25 years, might as well finish the job.  We can then sit with Israel at the pariahs' table at future gatherings.

He will absolutely try to take out/remove/whatever Maduro - he can't have him around bragging about beating the mighty US.

It's unfortunate, but it's just like if Alabama were caught cheating at recruiting, the Mississippi School for Coal Miners and Wayward Teachers must to be taught a lesson to show the NCAA will not stand for it.

And the other Latin American nations are probably sending a lot of tips to the US pinning everything on Venezuela.

One of Trump’s biggest strengths wrt foreign policy is his perceived unpredictability. This move could be the equivalent of storming out of a business negotiation to create some urgency in the other party when you have the leverage. Or I guess he could green light an operation. I’m leaning towards no, but yall can go wild speculating on the horrible things that are going to happen.

You're giving the man far too much credit. Donald Trump lashes out when he needs a distraction.  Right now, the Epstein files are simmering on the back burner (the moment the new congresswoman is seated, she is apparently the last vote on some big stuff with the files), Trump is getting mocked over the National Guard stuff (and it hasn't been going the way he expected), he got mocked over the stupid meeting last week with the generals and admirals when Heggie talked about leaders not being fat, the tariffs are starting to raise prices (well they have been), and the government is shutdown (3rd time under Trump).

If you don't think he won't lash out at other countries to distract people, you haven't been paying attention.

Actually a pretty solid adaptation (Dafore should have been given a chance to run with the John Clark character).

But I don't think it's splashy enough for Trump, plus he'd tip it off publicly if he had Rangers and Special Forces in there killing Venezuelan leaders.

Yeah, but if we start bombing Venezuela over drugs, how many other countries in this hemisphere are going to wonder when they are next?

Trump clearly needed somebody to beat up on, but nobody likes the 200-pound linebacker in the 12th grade beating the shit out of the 100-pound 6th grader.

No. From Bolivia to Guatemala there is a move towards the old ways. Exceptions. Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. Shit the Dominicans are building a wall on their border.

Trust me. I stayed in a hotel in Cancun once.

He's playing fast and loose though - when he describes the cartels as "unlawful combatants" and says we are in a state of "armed conflict" with them, that's very specific legal language meant to allow him to hit anybody he deems an "unlawful combatant" and last I checked, the cartels cross a lot of borders and Congress wasn't talking about them after 9/11. He's trying to treat them like they are Al Qaeda, when they haven't declared war on us, haven't been killing a shitload of Americans and attacking our cities, bases, ships, etc.

And to top it all off, he was talking about regime change, which is insane.

If he doesn't get what he wants out of this, he will set his sights on another nation down there.  Or we will put boots on the ground unless Congress does something (hint: they won't).

I can’t believe it is the year of our Lord 2025 and so many people take everything Trump says literally. Yall freak out every time.

It’s part of his whole strategic ambiguity/madman thing. He doesn’t want adversaries to be able to predict what he’s going to do. Remember, he did the same thing with Iran. I know you remember because you freaked out about it,

“This is wild and makes me think he’s going to try regime change if he’s bringing up the embassy takeover and bitching about Iran killing Americans in the past.

And his earlier comment about regime change - if you’re the Iranian leadership and think he’s serious, you have nothing to lose by shutting down the Strait and doing some thing on a large scale against us.”

“All these people celebrating this didn't give two shits about Iran's nuclear capabilities two weeks ago. They only started caring because they were told to.

Fingers crossed that this goes no farther (further!).

And I'm hoping that influential people in the US will shut the fuck up about regime change, because if we make the Iranians think that we are going to make that happen, they have nothing to lose.”

And there’s more, but I’ll just share this to show how you get all caught up in your hallucinations about how you think things will play out.

Re Iran strike:

“The United States doesn't get to decide how things play out now - we just get to hope Iran does nothing.  Because Iran could shut down the Strait of Hormuz, and they are better equipped and better trained than the Houthi.  They could launch a bunch of missiles and drones at American bases across the Gulf, bases that do not have Israel's Iron Dome, and we better hope our AD folks are ready and have everything they need at all of those bases. We have American forces in a lot of bases around the Persian Gulf, and in many cases, it would be easy for the Iranian intelligence to have eyes on them, given their locations.

Speaking of autonomous warfare, they could flood the Gulf with drones - regardless of how much Ukraine has been supplied with decent Western air defenses, Russia is still overwhelming/getting through them, and there's a fuckton of ships that pass through the Strait that don't have much more than AK's or PKMs to ward off pirates.

And you can say "well not if the US Navy has anything to say about it" and yeah, what happens when the US Navy is operating in extremely close quarters in the area of the Strait, with lots of Iranian drones/missiles within range?  We have the best fucking navy in the world and second place is not even close, but what happens when we get the 2025 version of the HMS Sheffield sunk or a USS Cole with a hole blown in the side? You think Trump can back down from that? Hell no, he will only escalate things, and boots on the ground would not be out of the question.

And if you're Iran, you've probably already moved the good stuff out of Fordow and the other locations, to locations that have never seen an international inspection. I wouldn't be surprised if we bombed empty locations.

And the Iranian leadership will have to respond - any major sign of weakness and the population could easily pop off.

It may not be Pandor's Box, but we have no idea how this is going to play out, or how many Americans will end up dead or where our military involvement will stop.

If Trump conveyed to the Iranians that this was a limited strike, that was an extremely dumbfuck thing to do, because you never tell your enemies where you plan on stopping. The Iranians could strike back at US forces and dare Trump to ramp things up knowing his base would not be pleased.”

Your analysis is fatally flawed because of your contempt for one man. You sound ridiculous. Take a look at you pumping BRICS instead of like hey maybe Venezuela can get fucked. Maybe nothing will happen idk. But you’re acting like Colombia or whoever will make a meaningful connection or contribution with that? Give me a break.

The problem is that our Secretary of State declared that Maduro was a "fugitive from American justice" whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean, so I don't think there are any deals to be cut - Maduro is lining up to be Trump's Noriega or Saddam Hussein or Ghaddafi or whatever example one wants to use.  And Trump ordered Grenell to cease discussions in a phone call he made while he was in the middle of meeting with DOD leadership. I know, I know, he was trying to pretend he was tough in front of the generals and admirals, but still.

We seem to be ignoring all of the other cartels that are a bit closer and have killed far more Americans than Venezuela's cartels.  Kind of odd that Trump has zeroed in on them, and talked about regime change and declared they are unlawful combatants, and Rubio declared he was a fugitive from American justice, etc.

I absolutely hope I'm wrong and that nothing happens, but somebody is 100% coaching him on the specific language to use, trying to shoehorn it into the stuff passed after 9/11, and that can't be a mistake.

Lol at Trump’s unpredictability being part of some grand strategy.  Trump is unpredictable because he’s senile, has the attention span of a goldfish, and doesn’t know himself what he’s going to do from one minute to the next (except drain the treasury into his and his family’s pockets).

Bingo.  Are his proclivities something that an actual functioning State Department could use to their advantage in some respects?  Sure; you play the cards you're dealt, and "hey man, I don't know what he's gonna do or say next, why don't we make a deal?" is a real-deal play.  See the wisdom of brilliant negotiator Crash Davis:

But crediting his batshittery to some grand strategy....well, that's something.
