After an event of this magnitude, those responsible for public safety (and private safety) need to get assed to either turn off the other alerts on their phone or pay enough attention to sort the trivial from the serious.

Are you posting elsewhere on Surly about this? Wife and a couple of our friends are wanting to do this, and we're just starting to explore the idea. Here would be a good place, too, I think, but the Camino probably has or deserves its own thread.

I don't like it either. We've had the discussion. The word rises like lightning in the mind when considering some people. Most people use it aptly without regard to sex, but it still has that degrading aspect. There is no such word for men. I only use the word when with people who know exactly what I mean. I rarely use it, however. The deacons will pass the collection plate. I'll be in back with the altar boys. -
Ok, but the point is the dude in the instagram post in the OP is not talking about what the best movies from 1995 are.

Having a single-state trail in a place with as rich a heritage as Texas is pretty appealing, which is why I'm surprised to find no earlier references to this trail on Surly. But you're right -- this isn't like most of the famed national trails with logical paths across lots of public land (and which could rely on eminent domain like around 16 percent of the Appalachian Trail did). Most of them also avoid large urban/suburban areas, which xTx will have a harder time doing. I live about 10 miles from the closest spot to me on Ice Age Trail, which is entirely in Wisconsin. That particular stretch has been both road walk and tread through private land in the time I've been here. It's gone back and forth because the tread portion had no formal easement agreement and the landowner had a beef with the state's Department of Natural Resources after getting fined for deer baiting. Unfortunate, because that piece of land has some of the best glacial drumlins anywhere on the trail (with those geological features being the organizing theme for the entire trail). Other beautiful stretches, like one on the Fox River that used to be a Boy Scout camp but then got bought privately and also had no easement, have also been taken out. Others are still being added, because about 500 miles of the trail are still road walking. A lot of nice country roads, but some aren't. Both easements and the problem of water in the western stretches of this trail are going to be massive logistical issues. That will be a mess, but some folks will do it. The appeal of finishing a big challenge like this always grabs a few. And if it's well planned, the trail will get some good bike traffic out of those same urban areas into the surrounding country -- assuming there's enough of it that's relatively easy to get to. Agreed -- love the idea and he deserves huge credit. But it looks like the Trans American Trail is not at all intended for hiking. I hadn't really heard about this trail, but I'm starting to think about doing stretches of some of American bike routes in retirement. I'm wondering if some of the western xTx stretches could even be hiked (and if other stretches could be biked). Not sure that any other national trail has a combination of that little water and public access for such a long stretch. Will be incredible to pull this off. (BTW, @Bevo&Pevo, thanks for bringing this up -- enjoyed reading about the TAT and its similarly named precursor, which was also unfamiliar to me.)

You can read about it online and the pros and cons of each. What's online matched what the dr said. I had the same attitude as you at first but a little research...

Was thinking about this this morning. Everything is just the sum of its parts. The 90s just happened to have better individuals. Cohen brothers, Scorsese, Spielberg, Tarantino, Ridley Scott. Now what? Who is running this thing? JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy?

Iβm doing it now on the Camino Norte. But the drivers and traffic are significantly better in Europe. This idea has a bit of Death Race 2000 to it.

Bondi has a real problem on her hands. I just read wikipedia, and she's crooked: abuses her power and shrugs off ethics. But, what are her moral foundations? I'll pre-empt the obvious rejoinder that she has none. We don't know that. Is she a sociopath who doesn't care about having her name forever tied to a trafficking operation that provided teenagers to old men? I think that dread is what makes the GOPs do their disingenuous reversal on their votes. They're disingenuous through and through, but I doubt any of them are sincere in their votes to cover-up for the president. Their faces may get blend with the crowd. None of them are as isolated in this as Bondi. When this comes up, her name will always be in the first paragraph. The intolerant moral persecution of non-Ward Cleave sexual certainty is despicable, but, say what you will, at least it's an ethos, Dude. I'm guessing that she does not want to be bad guy in this. She's spitting the bit when it comes to trafficking teenage girls to amoral wealthy shitwads. I think Trump's fallback position about "credible" information is a compromise offer. Either don't publish under claim of credibility or publish and paint the whole thing as incredible (I hate what we've done with this word). Not a bad strategy for a public that's so far been willing to collect Trump Big Beautiful Fig Leaves. Accusing Obama and Biden is quite a leap. It's lazy on Trump's part. He's likely going off script to do so. I think the script was Steele Dossier, Russia Hoax, Perfect Phone Call all generated by the deep state. He's peddled that before with putridly favorable results. A lot of this comes down to the soul of Pam Bondi. Pence came to a moment where he stood his ground, and no person exceeded his sychopancy. Well, Pam? -
That is such bullshit.

I'm kind of with you on this. The big reason the NWS alerts don't work is because we've become fatigued by all the Amber Alerts, storm watches and whatnot that buzz our phones throughout the day and night. There needs to be some discretion as to how these are issued, and I would hope the sirens would be exercised with extreme caution. They ABSOLUTELY should be developed and configured with input from the camps, RV parks and condos along the river. Give a XX minute alarm when upstream thresholds are met (rising waters, X feet above normal pool, etc), and have an understood evacuation protocol in place. Each camp, for instance, should have a procedure in place verified by the county for when the alarms go off, each RV camp and River Inn have their own protocols (evacuate, drive downstream to Rendezvous point X), etc. And again, they need to ensure they guard the sirens to where they don't become the next overused NWS alerts that get ignored.
