Tom "the turtle" Herman [Lame Duck or greatest 5d chess player ever?]

Herman and his team will almost certainly try to frame it this way. On the bright side it's pretty likely that all of Herman's current players hate his guts and won't exactly rush to defend him to the media so that will undercut the message somewhat. No matter who the next head coaching hire is I'm expecting our players to be throwing a ton of shade towards Tom whenever it's finally all over.

I just don't see Herman getting much traction with this angle. Mack had Jamail as his agent and BMDs split around him. CS was at his core a seemingly likeable dude that seemed to instill loyalty from players and coaches. Herman has successfully alienated every constituency: BMDs, fans, players (rash of "soft tissue" injuries) during his tenure. He can try and spin how he wants but I don't think many will fight that fight for him, especially if Texas hires Urban. There are very few coaches you could bring in to replace Herman: Saban, Belicheck, Urban eg that anyone would be like "oh yeah, of course you fire that dude and hire that guy". Now if Texas hires yet another up and coming multi-directional state U coach to replace him, maybe Herman can try and sell the story of Texas being inherently racist around the EOT.

Texas sucking ass didn't hurt OU's chancing of getting into the playoffs and being a national brand the last 10 years.

Very painful to type the above. I now have the sads

While I don't disagree that OU did a pretty good job of not following us south to the median, I actually think our sucking did hurt OU on the national scale. When they are battling TCU, and Baylor for the conference championship there are seeds of doubt cast nationally whether they are worthy of consideration. I think the complete disappearance of a Pac 12 threat coupled with the two QB Heisman's they won keep them relevant enough to make the playoffs, but as soon as they were beaten the ESPN talking heads couldn't pat themselves on the back quick enough to return the narrative to the SEC.

They didn't replace near the entire staff... and even when you bring in new coordinators, if the players are good and well coached enough to begin with, you don't fall down like this, and it's not a rebuild.

Bama replaced their two coordinators last year, and no one said they were rebuilding.

I wonder if some of the hesitant fans, and our admin/some BMDs truly understand this fact. It isn't going to get any better under Herman. The time is now.

Get better's ass; it's going to get worse. This is the year we were all pointing to--Roster full of herman-picked 4/5stars, solid senior QB, blo-u in a rebuilding year--everything was "aligned" for us. Now, we're looking at 5-5 and recruiting's absolutely tanking. Oh, yes, don't forget the get-out-of-jail-free transfer portal. Wonder if any of our loyal, committed, EOT-loving student-athletes will look to bail?

No way would a potential hire claim that his past employer was racist. Or a better way to state that is if someone was looking for a job and said his last employer was racist, he would never get hired. Shitting on your last employer is a bad interviewing technique.

The unnamed big time coach is likely Franklin.

He and Del Conte both got their MA's at WSU circa 1998, while Del Conte was some assistant to the AD and Franklin was the TE coach. It is also very likely they had classes together as Del Conte's masters was in Education, administration, and supervision; while Franklin's was in Educational leadership.

He'd be a solid #2 behind Urban.

The point was that this is all an indictment on Herman. Teams don't rebuild in year four of a regime. You get better, or you get to fucking walking.

It's really amazing that running the table in either direction -- winning out or losing out -- does not seem out of the realm of possibility.

If not for a miracle onside kick recovery, we are 0-3 against three teams that are a combined 0-6 in their other big 12 games. And we haven't even played the three highest ranked teams in the conference (OSU, KSU, ISU). Two of those games are on the road. All seven teams ahead of us in the Big 12 standings are either still on our schedule, or have already beaten us.

Let's say we drew this realm of possibilities as a circle on a piece of paper, with dots representing outcomes.  "Winning out" would be a small dot on a completely separate sheet of paper, which would then have to be placed inside a rocket ship and fired into space.

You're not wrong but it's not exactly like we've got Clemson, Bama, Georgia and Ohio State the rest of the way. The Big 12 is gutter trash. We have talent on the roster.

Look, I don't want to win out because I want to make sure we move on from Herman at any cost.

Oh, absolutely not. I still disagree that it was a rebuild because it wasn't. In our case, it was an attempt to get better, and take the next step. It didn't happen because Tom isn't a good enough coach. The talent has gotten plenty better, especially for the Big 12.

In Bama's case, it was in an effort to maintain the dominance the team already had (and happened to be the only other recent example I could think of where two coordinators were replaced in the same year, without being a rebuild).

It was a minor disagreement, but I can see it's just easier to say FTH and agree with you so yah FTH. And The Brockermeyers.

Thats some solid sleuthing.  He's easily the next best candidate after Urban - strangely enough because of Franklin's new contract and buyout he also might to cost more than Urban.   He's had 3 top 10 finishes and one top 20 in his 6 seasons at PSU.  Only shitty part is that if we miss out on Urban we likely have to wait for the Big10 season to finish before we hire Franklin.

chris peterson would not go over well with the black players his hiring would cause an eot like controversy

here is a refresher for u yt people on petersons okg policy

Quote

Last week, THE best player in the history of Washington state (Garfield and Kennedy HS) went out of his way to give an interview with Brandon Huffman of 247 sports saying that he is no longer seriously considering Washington.Word came out quickly after that Oregon coaches and players as well as people in his camp have been telling him that the UW OKG model is racist and elitist, and he should go to a school that creates a better environment for black athletes who don't come from higher income backgrounds.

Quote
  • UW has recruited a fewer number of black athletes than average, especially black athletes who come from lower income backgrounds

  • The culture of the team is very buttoned up and proper. There is no flash and very little fun shown to fans

  • Petersen and staff expect recruits to behave in a very specific way that often does not align with the upbringing of kids from low socio-economic backgrounds

Franklin would be a horrible hire. He's expensive, his offense doesn't fit the Big 12 at all, his Gameday management skills make Andy Reid look like a savant, and you probably don't want to look too deeply into what went on under his watch at Vandy. If we don't land Urban and Bellmont picks Franklin they've learned absolutely nothing. Conduct a proper search. At least try and go after Cristobal, Dan Mullen, or the other far superior candidates before settling for Franklin. Fuck, I'd take Matt Campbell over Franklin. He would be a disaster here.

If we don’t hire urban we’ve learned nothing. We jumped the gun to get Herman, an itchy trigger finger for someone with no skins on the wall. Now the guy who has skins on the wall at two P5 schools is a free agent and we don’t have an itchy trigger finger? Back to the “we’re Stanford*” motto I guess.

*not really, we’re just Texas.

You’re right about his game management, but their offense isn’t his. It’s changed fairly significantly from John Donovan to Moorhead to Ricky Rahne to now Kirk Ciarrocca. Also, I’m not sure that Mullen is actually better than Franklin. Mullen seems to have an issue of keeping underwhelming assistants for too long (Grantham, Greg Knox, and Ron English), and he’s worse at communicating than Franklin. That being said, Franklin needs a huge year this year so that their ‘22 class matches their ‘17-19 classes.

Petersen isn’t even an option, but Smalls went on to commit to them anyway. The rumor is that Cristobal pushed the racist angle hard, but UW overcame it because their staff wasn’t actually racist (shocker). Cristobal is kind of the antithesis to Mullen in that he has a killer instinct in recruiting, for better or worse.

I'm in agreement on Franklin being the #2 best choice in terms of a proven, P5 head coach. 3 top 10 finishes in the last 4 years including two NY6 bowl wins is pretty dang good. And PSU isn't UT, especially coming out of their scandal. He also had winning seasons in 2 of 3 seasons at Vandy which is a minor miracle.

Looks like his recruiting has been top 15ish on average at PSU but you'd have to expect a big bump at UT. Seems like they've put plenty of guys in the NFL too.

I haven't seen anything concrete about these off-field allegations but I really can't imagine PSU ignoring anything real given the situation they were in when they hired him. They had to have done extensive research on that front.

Cristobal's resume is complete shit outside of 1 good season at Oregon. Campbell hasn't won shit at Iowa State and before you use the "it's Iowa State" excuse know that Franklin won at Vanderbilt.

In no way, are Cristobal and Campbell better choices than Franklin.

Cristobal is flatly corrupt in recruiting. They might as well just hire Barry Switzer. Whatever the issues are with Meyer, he's not fundamentally corrupt when it comes to recruiting. I am not sure Cristobal could conduct the clean recruitment of a fucking saint. Beyond that, he's done less as a coach than Franklin and has shown his ass repeatedly in end of game situations.

Cristobal has explicitly built/structured the program at Oregon in the model of Nick Saban's, and he's said as much. If we were fine with hiring Saban, we should be fine with hiring Cristobal. It's a (pretty meaningless) difference of degrees. Cristobal also has a very good eye for coordinator hires.

Franklin trying to run what he runs over at Penn State here would be an absolute joke. In six years, through multiple offensive coordinators, he's never had a QB under him throw for more than 30 TDs in a season. How do you think that sort of offensive system will work here? The Big Ten lets him get away with that because it's a conference completely devoid of offensive imagination, other than Urban Meyer who jumped on the spread bandwagon and proceeded to dominate the conference. Meanwhile, we already have a coach who can't bring himself to go all-out and run up the score through the air. Franklin would be more of the same.

They're also loaded this season. Penn State will likely be a top 10 team.

Franklin isn't an Urban Meyer level hire but 4 top 10 finishes in the last 5 seasons would certainly be impressive. He also has the 3rd highest winning percentage in CFB since 2016 only behind Saban and Dabo.

Also, not only did Franklin have 2 winning seasons at Vandy he had 2 top 25 finishes. The last time Vandy had a top 25 finish prior to Franklin was 1948.

the 2 best candidates(Saban/Dabo/Petersen are out) after Meyer are probably  Mullen and Franklin.   Both these guys have been successful at 2 P5 programs and both won in P5 at also ran football schools.  they aren't just one hit G5 wonders which is the problem with the last 2 guys we hired.

Wut?

Moorhead was considered by most to be one of the best offensive coordinators in CFB. Also, how can you argue you want Cristobal when he just employed Moorhead? Ya know the same type coordinator you apparently don't want.

Also, I really like Penn State's new offensive coordinator in Ciarrocca. Go see what he did at Minnesota with shit talent. He's about to light things up at Penn State.

Those of you in favor of Franklin, think about this before you knee jerk answer. If top 10 finishes is your yardstick, do you really believe Franklin is a better coach than say Mack Brown.  If we can't upgrade from MB, then we're wasting our time as we have been since we fired him and didn't get Saban
