  1. Just talking out of my ass here (for all I know, she hasn't had any work done), but I suspect that she looks so good because much of contemporary plastic surgery seems to be geared towards making women look like what she already looked like naturally, so it's probably very easy for us to overlook any work she might have had done.
  2. Yeah, I'm in more or less the same boat. I've read the book (as well as a substantial portion of King's output) and have seen both the Tim Curry miniseries and the more recent movies, so I'm pretty much committed to it even if it doesn't grab me, but Mrs. Doom is coming into this with no frame of reference. I can't even really discuss it with her in any reasonable fashion given our familiarity disparity. She’ll finish it, but is growing weary of the shock/gross-out/over the top shit that seems to happen at least once per episode. It's not over yet, of course, but I had higher hopes for this than it seems to have measured up to, at least as of right now. I figured this thread would be really active on a weekly basis.
  3. I've given it a lot of thought too. The best I can come up with is some kind of lacquer treatment, but I don't have very high expectations, it's extra work, and it's a little contrary to the "trial by ordeal" process that sees some succeed where others fail. Also, I suspect that perhaps the die is genetically cast. Not all appear to be appealing to rodents, and not all rot into mush. Some have only one of the two known weaknesses and those still fail to survive, so it's a more complex and multivariate situation than I think any of us fully understand. Again, I need to speak with an accredited Gourdologist.
  4. I can't emphasize just how lightweight and delicate the survivors are. It's like a reasonably thick and sturdy papier mache. Shipping would require an individualized sort of "crate within a crate" system along the lines of the "design something to protect an egg from breaking when we drop it off the roof of the middle school" project that we all probably did.
  5. Nope. I'm comfortable with the current level of involvement and effort. A friend of mine is constantly trying to get me to begin making these at scale and selling them for exorbitant amounts of money to people who don't know any better, but the time commitment, unpredictability, and the significant difficulty packaging and shipping (he doesn't understand this at all...) are all dealbreakers for me. Some don't turn out to need anything of the sort, but I am still having difficulty evaluating the relative likelihood of survival during the selection phase. I've found that the hardest rinds seem to be the most reliable indicator, but it's not exact by any stretch of the imagination. I would love to talk to a botanist with a specialty in gourdology to learn more about what factors I should be looking for in order to separate the survivors from the appealing food sources.
  6. Dude on the right (along with the three Sacrificial Potatoes) has already sustained fatal damage and will likely perish into nothingness before winter truly arrives in Chicago. Taken this morning.
  7. From today's Daily Star article on the topic.
  8. I tried my portable gadget a few times to get a sense of it, and the "who knows what really goes on under there" factor is a definite concern. Perhaps it's just me, but it's a lot easier (and less disconcerting) for the stream to remain in a constant, fixed position and for the o-ring to move around than the opposite. I don't plan to travel with it, except for perhaps in very limited and specific circumstances. I can see a use case when visiting someone's home for a few days or more but installing a cheap, non-electric version is impossible. It won't replace my practice of using (allegedly) biodegradable buttwipes at hotels during work travel.
  9. That bit with the eyeballs merits an entry on the list of things I never expected to see on television.
  10. Then #2, then #4.
  11. More like Dwight Fuckem. How disappointing.
  12. Relax - nobody here is trying to eliminate your position.
  13. McNulty is the main character of The Wire. ~~~~~
  14. Da Ali G Show
  15. What?!
  16. He crawled into our bed in the middle of the night last night because he swears he was awake in bed and heard someone saying "vulture, vulture, vulture" behind him.
  17. Business trips, too.
  18. Some amusing artwork spotted in downtown Portland.
  19. If there are subsequent seasons, I hope that each one features a different element of nature to bludgeon with heavy-handed symbolism. Maybe next year's people can have a family ritual where they eat sand, or throw dirt, or smell rocks or something like that a few times an episode.
  20. Literally "I left my mark" - maybe that's it???
  21. I don't expect anyone here to have any more insight on the topic than I do, but I am continually bewildered whenever I see someone has etched some kind of nickname into the mirror, fixtures, etc., of a public restroom. I understand graffiti, and I understand tagging, but what's the point of scratching your name, initials, nickname, gang name, etc. in a random public bathroom? Even accepting the statistical unlikelihood of someone reading your scratches and recognizing your name, what's the fucking point? "Oh, awesome, Morbo82 pissed here once too!" or "the 21st Street Crips really get around - a member of theirs has pissed at this airport. They must control Terminal 3." Just baffling.
  22. They sit outside for a year before they get indoor privileges. At that point, those that survive are very hard and dry, and I expect all the good parts have been eaten. Mrs. Doom was skeptical at first, but she's now a true believer.
  23. You were probably too busy picking fights at the zoo that day.
  24. The author left a few boxes unchecked, though I'm sure that's at least partly a reflection of its specific era of creation.
  25. Just make the tortillas out of toilet paper so that they automatically wipe.
