  1. That kind of looks like what happens to me as I get down into the mid/lower 180's lb range. At 5'-11" (age 56) breaking into the 170's is damn near impossible. I kind of think something has shifted in my body, because at age 52, I was in the upper 170's and felt very little difference from how I felt in my 30's even though I weighed about ten lbs less back then, which is saying something because I was able to run a sub 5:00 minute mile in my 30's. A couple of years ago, I had gained some weight up to 200 lbs and I set out to lose weight by at what I thought would be a modest 2lbs per week goal. I gave up alcohol, dedicated each day to walk an hour, and try to stick to one meal a day (a big salad) during the week. Weekends I was free to eat sensibly. To my surprise, my weight came off in a linear fashion to the tune of 4lbs/week until I got down to 184, at which point it predictably slowed. At that point, being more than happy with things, my plan was to slow things down and get into the 170's with a less drastic approach, but that never materialized and i eventually gained the weight back. Even though I know, eating is probably about 80% of losing weight, I think once a man gets under 20% body fat, that we need some kind of movement related motivational factor to keep things going. That could be a race you want to do in a few month's, or a ski trip to get ready for, or some activity that you just want to get better at like cycling, or rock climbing, surfing, skiing etc. However, as I have gotten older, doing those fun things has become more difficult. There is a stiffness and struggle component there that was not there when I was just a few years younger. Joints hurt more, mobility is less, minor injuries occur all the time from seemingly out of nowhere caused by the most minor and random of movements. What was fairly easy to do just a few years prior has become something like pushing a rock up a hill. It has been a major adjustment for me not having that extra motivational factor out there and within just a few month's reach. I still think I can get there, but I have really had to slow my roll and adjust my timelines, which does not always work as your graph has pointed out.
  2. Daniel Jones?...more like George Jones.
  3. Like my golf game.
  4. Another interesting factoid about that game: Although replays will have the familiar voices of Pat Summerall and John Madden, the pair were working for Fox Sports instead of their longtime CBS Sports team. I remember it being kind of shock to hear Summerall plugging the FOX Sunday night lineup of the Simpsons and House of Buggin' instead of 60 minutes. I am more cautiously optimistic about this game than I was about last year's game. Last year was just a bad mismatch for Dallas and this year is less so. The NFC west was a meat grinder last year and the roles are reversed this year. Causes for concern: SF has extra rest days and no cross country travel. Dallas kicker issues. Dallas' 2 blown leads and wtf performance against Washington. Possible over hype of Tampa victory. There were a few blown defensive holding that could have been called on Dallas, inexplicable TB interception that changed the trajectory of the game, lots of Dallas 3rd down conversions that usually only work <50% of the time, and some TB drops. That game could have been much closer and then who knows what happens. If Dallas plays mistake free and has success or a stalemate early then I like their chances as long as it does not come down to the kicker.
  5. Idea stolen from Hogan's Heros, when Hogan had to disarm a bomb that had landed in the stalag but had not detonated. It came down to clipping one of two wires where one disarms and the the other detonates. Hogan ask Clink which wire to cut and Hogan cuts the other wire and saves the day. Hogan said he had no idea which was the right wire to cut, but was pretty sure Clink would pick the wrong one.

  7. Me too .
  8. RIP coach GUS. I will forever be grateful for his input on the design of the visiting bull pen walls that could easily be scaled with a back pack full of iced down beer or by my girlfriend in a miniskirt. On more than one occasion I exited the ballpark by going back over the wall out of respect and possibly because I was pretty drunk.

Lost was much better than thus. Lost wrapped up nicely minus the unnecessary purgatory half season mixed in. This is just crap ridding on the coattails of Dark. Better off rewatching Dark.
  10. Thank God Surly doesn't have that problem.
  11. ...so bone spurs?...no CR.
  12. Jacalitos on Oltorf was pretty good. Is it still around?
  13. CSB: Not me, but my twin brother. Back before he got kicked out of the school of business circa late 1980's: In his first or second semester he took macro economics 302 and got a solid C. A semester or two later he thought he was signing up for micro economics but accidentally registered for macro economics 302 again and took the class without recognizing that all of the material was somehow familiar, but the second time around he made a D, which according to university rules at the time, covered up the C he made earlier. So he had to take it a third time and "reearned" a grade of C. FYI: Jiggy-Z graduated with a 3.5, but did earn on D along the way in Cost accounting, but that was the semester I knocked up my girlfriend. Retook and made an A. Yes, a couple of real intellectual giants we were.
  14. Now that I look at it, it is a ways over to Heavenly. Travel time will cut into drinking time. Might check out the casino on one of our days off. Thanks.
  15. Me(55) and my oldest son (34) (I have written about him and his exploits here and on TOS) will be heading up to Tahoe Jan 5 -12 and staying with a friend of mine who has a place in Carnelian Bay a stones throw from Garwoods which is about equidistant from North Star and Palisades, so we will be hitting up those two places. We have 2 day Epic Passes and 2 Day Palisades passes. My son hasn't skied in 20 years, but was pretty good back in the day with very minimal experience. He was bombing the blues all day long after a brief lesson from my twin brother. Wondering if we should take a look at Heavenly? My friend thinks it's more of a place for locals and he is doing the driving, so I wonder how much I should insists if Surly says go v. other two places. The last time I went skiing was back in march at the above two places after a 20 year break. The mornings were OK, but my knees got sore in the afternoon slush. I was onto the blues by day two, but they stopped being fun as the knees got worse. I'm doing lots of twist lunges, squats, one leg balance exercises, and core work as well as hitting the bike to the tune of about 50 miles/week to try and avoid the knee pain, but am also wondering if a group lesson would also be a good idea? full day v. half day fro me and the boy/man. My friend would gladly teach us but he is snowboard only. He did a great job with my two teenagers(because they are too cool for skis) back in March on the snowboard teaching. We plan on hitting Garwoods on the 7th (my birthday 56) for dinner and a couple of Wet Woody's. Any recommendations for a middle aged skier with knee issues would be appreciated.
  16. Jolly Roger > Jolly Mensa.
  17. Has Luby's made list yet?
  18. Blues Brothers Half the movie is Jake and Elwood's religious calling/getting the band back together... ...the other half is band together at Ray's, Bob's, Palace hotel Ballroom, Maury's steam room, Jail.

Don't waste your time. This show has no plot and no point. You'll see. I too was sucked in by the DARK pedigree. Now go party like it's 1989.
  20. Those of you that grew up in the 70's with those cars and later inherited the cars to drive in the 80's lived through a special kind of hell. My high school parking lot was littered with their corpses and kept the local tow guys in business. Although I am squarely in the time period, my brother and I dodged a bullet on that one: Mom drove a 73' Cadillac Sedan De Ville and dad had a '75 Ford Explorer truck ( Dad is a Ford man but always got the shitty colors because they cost less at the end of season-I guess. The '75 was oxidizing brown with orange, tan, black, almost red and white striping and looked like Sark's pregame suit from TCU.) Any way, the late 70's gas price increase hit and they downsized to a '79 Mazda Station wagon (the car my brother and I would learn to drive on) and a -you guessed it-brown -Ford Courrier pick up. We eventually picked up an 83' Toyota Tercel for my brother and I and dad got rid of the Courrier when gas prices receded. Mom got a '84 Lincoln Town Car. Dad got another Big Ford Truck in another shitty color. In college we replace Mazda wagon with brand new '86 Mazda B2000 bench seater with a standard which I ended up selling in 1997 to one of my employees and that truck is still working a ranch in Durango, Mexico. My dad's trucks were truly hideous. I can remember a metallic turquoise green/blue with tan detailing and a metallic light brown with red detailing. Those late 70's early 80's imports were small with small engines. I remember when I bought my first walk behind concrete saw and the engine was bigger than any of the the ones in my learner cars, but not by much, but then again it was a just a saw.
  21. I was really hoping thus was going to be good, given my experience with DARK. Not the case. All of the moving in and out of the portals was pointless and not even worth keeping track of, unlike DARK, where the cave portal stuff was critically important to the story line and much more connected to the character development and overall architecture. Started a rewatch of DARK last night to cleanse the pallet.
  22. Hair parted on wrong side and mustache is too whispy.
  23. Bud Light salutes you: Mr. overly trigger happy good play football cannon guy!!!
  24. Alex Jones? More like Tom Jones amiright.
  25. Surly will remember the dark times while at the pinnacle, on the way to the pinnacle and everywhere in between.
