  1. What I would do if they only didn't have a monopoly on my water
  2. Johnny Generatorseed .
  3. Was 2007 storm the crazy one that hit on like a 65 degree and sunny day? Dropped the temp like 40 degrees and put ice all over the place in the mid to late afternoon.
  4. I remember the second snowfall was the best. I think it was Jan 12. This snow was well before Jim Spencer, and all the weather guys were geeking out . What was even better is that it was rolling in overnight on a Friday. Sure enough, I woke Saturday morning with snow on the ground. It snowed on and off all day and well into the night. I think San Antoinio got more than Austin. Besides the snow, that winter was pretty cold in general and by the time the third snowfall was done, I was good with only two foe Austin each winter.
  5. The tree damage just west of oak hill is worse than in 2021. We lost quite a few branches and trees then and subsequently had more removed and thinned as a preventive measure and we are getting far more damage now even after proactive work. On pec and we have not lost power. Temp has not gotten above 29 in two days. Being a lifelong austin resident since 1968, this event is in the top 5. Snowpocalypse is no 1. ..and then really a multi way tie for no 2 depending on what you hate the most. Winter if 85 it legit snowed 3 times with days long freezes each time. Winter of 89 it hit -2 and lots of stuff died. 2023 tree Macedon. Getting ready for bourbon on the rocks #2. Probably going to bed when the sun goes down.
  6. Agree. Even when you factor in the added costs of organic/farm raised/local food there are ways to meal plan/freeze/container/systemize/leftover the process so that you get good food at a reasonable price. Of course all of that hippie shit is not completely necessary, but a plan and a system is...and that takes work and a small investment in some cooking stuff and consistency of execution. Also, it takes willing participants. Case in point: I have two teenage boys still at home and they are not big on left overs, even if I get them ready, unless it is something that lends itself to reheating like brisket. They are competitive rock climbers and kick my ass up and down the crag, but have no clue how this shit works despite my involving them in meal prep and family budgeting-perhaps it will sink in when they are paying the bills. Also, the wife is good a torpedoing my meal and leftover plans too. As others have also said, Fatness is but one El Guapo that we deal with. Most other unhealthy habits and their manifestations are largely hidden from all but the most observant, but may nevertheless be even more destructive than excess weight and a poor diet. There are numerous threads on this site devoted to the El Guapos of alcohol addiction, self made personality disorders, drugs, relationships, and, of course, following Texas Longhorns football.
  7. So Bengals/49ers III. 20-16 or 26-21? We got oh so close last year to that match up, but I think not. Eagles/ Bengals. Bengals take it.
  8. Denial is a powerful trait we all have and it is not just with our own weight. Case in point. My parents live on a ranch and my dad(89) is pretty skinny and mom (83) is overweight, but not crazy, and actually pretty good considering she has really bad knees and does not move around a whole lot. Over the last 30 years or so they have had many dogs come and go, and all of them gain an enormous amount of weight while under their care. It doesn't matter the source or age. They have had new born pups, strays, rescues, purchased pure breeds, you name it. All of them have gotten morbidly obese. The worse case was when I could no longer have my Hungarian Visla at my house because he had become overly protective of my two toddlers and he was interfering with their ability to have friends over. He barked a lot and would scare the other kids, so my folks took him in at the ranch before anything bad happened at my place. That dog was the model for a fit hound. He looked like an Olympic sprinter and had to have all kinds of activity for his enjoyment. So my folks got him and he absolutely loved them and they him. He could spend as much time as he wanted outdoors chasing cows and other critters. It only took about a year for him to gain so much weight the he was flat on the top of his spine and went from his sleek form to a walking five gallon bucket with legs. At which point I had to say something to my parents. i pointed out what happened to him and all of their other dogs and the vet vet bills, and the doggy insulin, and all of it. It was like talking to a brick wall and they looked at me like I was crazy and then accused me of starving my my own dog before I sent him over to the ranch. Despite all of the evidence, the years of pictures with fat dogs, vet bills etc., they refused to believe that they were doing anything wrong. JUST COULD NO SEE IT.
  9. That kind of looks like what happens to me as I get down into the mid/lower 180's lb range. At 5'-11" (age 56) breaking into the 170's is damn near impossible. I kind of think something has shifted in my body, because at age 52, I was in the upper 170's and felt very little difference from how I felt in my 30's even though I weighed about ten lbs less back then, which is saying something because I was able to run a sub 5:00 minute mile in my 30's. A couple of years ago, I had gained some weight up to 200 lbs and I set out to lose weight by at what I thought would be a modest 2lbs per week goal. I gave up alcohol, dedicated each day to walk an hour, and try to stick to one meal a day (a big salad) during the week. Weekends I was free to eat sensibly. To my surprise, my weight came off in a linear fashion to the tune of 4lbs/week until I got down to 184, at which point it predictably slowed. At that point, being more than happy with things, my plan was to slow things down and get into the 170's with a less drastic approach, but that never materialized and i eventually gained the weight back. Even though I know, eating is probably about 80% of losing weight, I think once a man gets under 20% body fat, that we need some kind of movement related motivational factor to keep things going. That could be a race you want to do in a few month's, or a ski trip to get ready for, or some activity that you just want to get better at like cycling, or rock climbing, surfing, skiing etc. However, as I have gotten older, doing those fun things has become more difficult. There is a stiffness and struggle component there that was not there when I was just a few years younger. Joints hurt more, mobility is less, minor injuries occur all the time from seemingly out of nowhere caused by the most minor and random of movements. What was fairly easy to do just a few years prior has become something like pushing a rock up a hill. It has been a major adjustment for me not having that extra motivational factor out there and within just a few month's reach. I still think I can get there, but I have really had to slow my roll and adjust my timelines, which does not always work as your graph has pointed out.
  10. Daniel Jones?...more like George Jones.
  11. Like my golf game.
  12. Another interesting factoid about that game: Although replays will have the familiar voices of Pat Summerall and John Madden, the pair were working for Fox Sports instead of their longtime CBS Sports team. I remember it being kind of shock to hear Summerall plugging the FOX Sunday night lineup of the Simpsons and House of Buggin' instead of 60 minutes. I am more cautiously optimistic about this game than I was about last year's game. Last year was just a bad mismatch for Dallas and this year is less so. The NFC west was a meat grinder last year and the roles are reversed this year. Causes for concern: SF has extra rest days and no cross country travel. Dallas kicker issues. Dallas' 2 blown leads and wtf performance against Washington. Possible over hype of Tampa victory. There were a few blown defensive holding that could have been called on Dallas, inexplicable TB interception that changed the trajectory of the game, lots of Dallas 3rd down conversions that usually only work <50% of the time, and some TB drops. That game could have been much closer and then who knows what happens. If Dallas plays mistake free and has success or a stalemate early then I like their chances as long as it does not come down to the kicker.
  13. Idea stolen from Hogan's Heros, when Hogan had to disarm a bomb that had landed in the stalag but had not detonated. It came down to clipping one of two wires where one disarms and the the other detonates. Hogan ask Clink which wire to cut and Hogan cuts the other wire and saves the day. Hogan said he had no idea which was the right wire to cut, but was pretty sure Clink would pick the wrong one.
  14. Like my golf game.
  15. Me too .
  16. RIP coach GUS. I will forever be grateful for his input on the design of the visiting bull pen walls that could easily be scaled with a back pack full of iced down beer or by my girlfriend in a miniskirt. On more than one occasion I exited the ballpark by going back over the wall out of respect and possibly because I was pretty drunk.

Lost was much better than thus. Lost wrapped up nicely minus the unnecessary purgatory half season mixed in. This is just crap ridding on the coattails of Dark. Better off rewatching Dark.
  18. Thank God Surly doesn't have that problem.
  19. ...so bone spurs?...no CR.
  20. Jacalitos on Oltorf was pretty good. Is it still around?
  21. CSB: Not me, but my twin brother. Back before he got kicked out of the school of business circa late 1980's: In his first or second semester he took macro economics 302 and got a solid C. A semester or two later he thought he was signing up for micro economics but accidentally registered for macro economics 302 again and took the class without recognizing that all of the material was somehow familiar, but the second time around he made a D, which according to university rules at the time, covered up the C he made earlier. So he had to take it a third time and "reearned" a grade of C. FYI: Jiggy-Z graduated with a 3.5, but did earn on D along the way in Cost accounting, but that was the semester I knocked up my girlfriend. Retook and made an A. Yes, a couple of real intellectual giants we were.
  22. Now that I look at it, it is a ways over to Heavenly. Travel time will cut into drinking time. Might check out the casino on one of our days off. Thanks.
  23. Me(55) and my oldest son (34) (I have written about him and his exploits here and on TOS) will be heading up to Tahoe Jan 5 -12 and staying with a friend of mine who has a place in Carnelian Bay a stones throw from Garwoods which is about equidistant from North Star and Palisades, so we will be hitting up those two places. We have 2 day Epic Passes and 2 Day Palisades passes. My son hasn't skied in 20 years, but was pretty good back in the day with very minimal experience. He was bombing the blues all day long after a brief lesson from my twin brother. Wondering if we should take a look at Heavenly? My friend thinks it's more of a place for locals and he is doing the driving, so I wonder how much I should insists if Surly says go v. other two places. The last time I went skiing was back in march at the above two places after a 20 year break. The mornings were OK, but my knees got sore in the afternoon slush. I was onto the blues by day two, but they stopped being fun as the knees got worse. I'm doing lots of twist lunges, squats, one leg balance exercises, and core work as well as hitting the bike to the tune of about 50 miles/week to try and avoid the knee pain, but am also wondering if a group lesson would also be a good idea? full day v. half day fro me and the boy/man. My friend would gladly teach us but he is snowboard only. He did a great job with my two teenagers(because they are too cool for skis) back in March on the snowboard teaching. We plan on hitting Garwoods on the 7th (my birthday 56) for dinner and a couple of Wet Woody's. Any recommendations for a middle aged skier with knee issues would be appreciated.
