  1. Paxton is the new ideal Christian. Personal behavior, professional behavior, ethics and methods don't matter. As long as you're passing laws and policies that advance the white, national "Christian" values, you can do anything. As Trump very prophetically said, he could murder someone on 5th Ave. and it wouldn't impact his numbers. There are people that just don't give a shit about anything but themselves. And then they run to wrap themselves in the flag and Jesus.
  2. In my experience, HSAs don’t automatically pay for anything. I suppose there could be a plan that automatically pays for expenses but some people don’t want that. They keep it in the HSA and let it grow tax free. Save the health care bills and cash out at some later year.
  3. The more I read about Mike Johnson, the more I would prefer Jim Jordan as Speaker. Jordan is an asshat but at least we understand who he is. I’m uncertain if we’ve ever had a religious fundamentalist this close to the Presidency. His wife didn’t go his swearing in as speaker because she was tired from praying? And he feels that God put him in the Speaker role? I assume that any opinion he has is actually God working through him which leaves no room for compromise. You can’t compromise God’s word. lets hope that Johnson does what we expect so that the House can flip to blue next year. Especially since the senate could easily go red.
  4. After seeing Jared get eliminated, I stopped watching as well. Not that I was mad about that but I realized his eviction was the only thing I was waiting to see.
  5. Yes but the state is deciding new rules for local property tax. Which is their legal right but why not let locals decide local matters? And this is about defunding public schools not giving you a tax break. On the amendment about Galveston’s county treasurer, the problem as I read it was that the former treasurer was conned into giving $500K to someone who ran with the money. Now they want to eliminate the position because they voted in a moron. Why not just elect competent people and create/follow fiscal governance policies?
  6. If I married a wealthy woman I wouldn’t decline signing a prenup. I wouldn’t sign a “I get nothing” prenup but take into account how long the marriage lasted, if I gave up any potential earnings/retirement, etc. i would also want clarity on how much she’s picking up on major joint expenses like housing, cars and vacations. if she’s wealthy enough, maybe she pays 100% of those. That would be part of the benefit of signing the prenup. now where do I find this woman?
  7. Very late reply but I had wondered what happened to this guy. He owns a winery between Waco and Temple with his wife. Flies up to DC late, misses Trumps rally but joins in on the crowd breaking into the Capitol He was alongside Ashli Babbitt when they both were trying to break into protected areas and she was shot. He was also accused of leading people to the House chamber, trying to turn off power via an electrical box and using a police shield as a weapon against law enforcement. Guy went from his Southwest flight directly into leading misguided violence. I understand mob actions can encourage unexpected behavior but this guy was primed to attack. now he has 7 years in a Bastrop federal prison to contemplate his mistakes. One mistake being that he trusted his lawyer and didn’t take a plea on all charges. And then testifying? I imaging that his lack of remorse during his testimony added time to the sentence.
  8. The guy in the light blue cardboard jacket has no clue what he is defending. You can tell that he wants to reply that he was told to push an amendment without understanding it.
  9. A few years back, some Garden Oaks elderly residents got ripped off by some door-to-door contractors who got cash upfront to go buy constructions materials, and they never returned. I can't speak to their ethnicity but that has been noted as a common scam Roma con artists pull.
  10. Is that an airline seat in someone's house?
  11. Metro is just too slow. I looked into MetroRail for my work commute, even understanding that it would require a park n ride and some walking. Altogether it was more than double the time to just drive my car. No thanks. You need elevated or underground options to make it worthwhile. For Houston, the die was cast when they removed the electrified streetcars over 100 years ago. The car won. I imagine that integrated seating in the 50s and 60s didn't help with bus ridership.
  12. The problem with the state legislatures and these district maps is that there is no punishment for outlandish attempts. The worst case for the state legislatures is that a fair map is drawn so there is no incentive in drawing a fair map. I feel like if the state is found to have egregiously drawn an unfair map, they should lose the right to draw any new maps for 10-20 years. Punish the majority party for the shady shit they're trying. And I'm cool with this for either party.
  13. There is also nothing to prevent a county/ sheriff in deputizing citizens to take on this specific immigration task. And while that may seem far-fetched, I wouldn't have guessed that counties are now making it illegal to use their roads to drive to an out-of-state abortion. As for cops driving suspected undocumented people to the border, I have to guess the next step is for Border Security to stop Texas law enforcement in driving ANYONE over the border, or at least question everyone in the vehicle if they want to drive over the border. Finally, I would think this will fall under kidnapping or human trafficking for law enforcement in moving people without their permission or without due process. And while Texas state law might protect them, the border isn't Texas' jurisdiction.
  14. Watch influencer/reseller was screwing everyone. Shocked.
  15. Article about 25 Houston postal workers being attacked while on the job this year. If like me you're thinking that they're getting attacked because of crazy people, or someone wants to steal any mail they're carrying, that's not the deal. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/crime/article/postal-workers-decry-rash-violence-houston-18446031.php Never mail anything in a USPS blue collection box especially if the collection isn't until tomorrow or the next day. Even if it's a harmless non-financial letter, it could very easily end up in the trash by someone looking for money.
  16. I'm sure plenty of Texas deputies will empathize with Hispanic people that they pull over. They will use nuanced clues to carefully identify who may or may not be an undocumented person before asking citizenship questions. Or.
  17. Good points. I struggle with laws like this because I, even as a non-parent, feel the point of the public school system is to best educate our kids. However I'm reminded in the public education thread, that some in power are actively trying to take down our public school system. It's no surprise they want to defund the schools. It plays into their narrative that public school education is a failure once they take much of the money away. And don't get me wrong, I know schools waste money. But defunding them will unlikely change that waste.
  18. I’ve long predicted that the state of Texas will eventually have 1 state-wide teacher for every subject. They either film or live broadcast 1 teacher per subject into every classroom for that subject. You back it up with an even lower paid teacher aide who is either assisting the students in the classroom, or effectively baby sitting them. it also allows complete control of the message to each student. school districts would love it because Abbott and GQP will pick up the cost of the teacher.
  19. Smart of them. It will pass with 94-95%, and this way they get their tax bills out on time.
  20. I know #4 will pass but I don’t understand the math. If we lower the local school district taxes wont that eventually impact education? I know the state is giving a one-time payout to the schools but that won’t be repeated. If the state wants to reduce the tax burden on its citizens, why not drop the sales tax percentage? You know, the tax money that goes to the state. And is paid by everyone not just home owners.
  21. It’s like Cheech’s Born in East LA music video come to life.
  22. ridiculous that UT has not kept up in growing the campus. Now with online classroom options, the enrollment should be growing at a fast pace. Instead UT wants to put a gate around the university so the professors can pat themselves on the back for educating the few. UT has forgotten their charter.
  23. Are the Astros on the hook for JV's entire 2024 and potential 2025 salary? Or will the Mets owe some of that?
  24. The natural gas generator owners are saying that they actually don't want to build any new power generators due to the uncertainty of future electrical prices not the upfront capital costs. My guess is that the next move from the Legislature is to somehow ensure tax dollars will prop up any operational profits.
  25. NC went 7-7 GOP/Dem for their 14 House seats in 2022. Can't have that. The new map was drawn so the expected outcome is 10-3 with 1 competitive district. Not to mention that NC was 50%-48.6% for Trump over Biden. This state is purple but the GOP isn't going to let that happen again.
