  1. I don't know why Daily Beast does that sometimes. To get around most anything, just copy/paste the URL into Archive.org. Re: the article. This guy, at 18 years of age as a HS senior, tried to cyberbully a 16-year-old boy over a 16-year-old girl, and their dads had to get involved. That was a mere four years ago. https://archive.is/gYxHc

Miss Thang, the Aztecan goddess, leading the parade was fun. Good for you, Troph. So glad y'all had a nice escape.
  4. It looks like that greaseball just got back from smuggling Bolivian marching powder in an old two-seater Cessna, which would explain his prolonged absence.
  5. Oooh, it didn't register with me that it was Rosie O’Donnell and not Roseanne Barr. I always get their names confused; hence, my calling her crazy in another thread. It also explains so much more.
  6. Big find in Belize by U of H archaeologists. The archaeologists worked in the shadow of towering Maya ruins, piercing the floor of a structure they had searched years before. Below, they found an even more ancient chamber, still holding a body and the treasures it was buried with: a rare mosaic death mask and jadeite jewelry, shells from the Pacific and elaborate designs on pottery and bone. It was the 1,700-year-old tomb of a Maya ruler β€” the first ever found at Caracol, the largest Maya site in Belize β€” and it held clues to a Mesoamerican world where cities contended with one another from hundreds of miles apart. β€œThey’ve found a very early ruler, so that’s very important, and he’s claimed to be the founder of a dynasty,” said Gary Feinman, an archaeologist at Field Museum of Chicago who was not involved in the excavation. β€œThat’s a major find.” Arlen Chase, one of the archaeologists working at Caracol, was among the first to enter the tomb. β€œAs soon as we saw the chamber, we knew we had something,” he said. From the style of ceramic vessels, he knew the tomb was exceptionally old. From the red cinnabar all around, he knew it was for someone of very high status. But it was the mosaic mask, in pieces of jadeite off to the side, that made him realize just how unusual the tomb was. β€œOh my God, this is much more important than I thought it was,” he remembers thinking. cont'd: https://archive.is/gsIrN
  7. Kid's got talent and is quick in churning these clever little ditties out. @mchookem's a big fan and has been posting his clips elsewhere.
  8. Rex, known bibliophobe, just dropped the charade with this comment: https://www.surlyhorns.com/board/topic/44774-july-4th-hill-country-flooding-tragedy/page/18/#comment-7198801
  9. Confirmation this guy is Rex.
  10. Then, shut the fuck up. What you may or may not have heard directly from the affected families becomes a rumor when you spread it second-hand on the internet to the rest of us. And, as we should all have learned by now, internet rumors can take a life of their own and cause material damage in the real world. Read this again: Stacy married into Eastland family, y’all need to look into her and why she left Mystic. I’ve heard stories why... "We" need to look into her and why she left. What do you expect a bunch of keyboard warriors, or even others who knew some of the families or kids, to do with this information?
  11. You, yourself, are rumor-mongering right here. Either have the guts to say what you want to say behind an anonymous account, or shut the fuck up.
  12. Bozo's vocal critique against strong mayoral systems has been going on for a while. He's posted about it in the "WTF is wrong with you, Austin?" thread. I happen to agree with him on that point. There's a reason that most Texas cities over a certain size have switched over to a more professionalized city manager/council system. Apparently, NYC has stuck with the strong mayoral system, which is a shame, because it's a ripe situation for ineptitude, corruption, and political favors. That said, I don't have a strong stance on whether Mamdani or Cuomo would be more suited to NYC's approach to self-government. I suspect that Cuomo probably would be more amenable to the corruption and political favors stuff, which probably translates to some degree of effectiveness in terms of "getting shit done," but that wouldn't necessarily make him a better mayor because there remains the question of what shit he would get done. I don't know what their proposals are, because I don't follow NYC politics, so I can't speak to that part.
  13. @Sbbruin @Foosters I figured this would be of interest to you guys. For months, the day laborers had decontaminated homes that survived the Los Angeles wildfires. Sweating in masks and protective suits, they vacuumed toxic soot and ash, wiped down books and framed photos, and disposed of clothes and furniture that could not be salvaged. One morning last month, they crammed into a small job center in Pasadena, Calif., ready for more work. But on this day, the situation felt too dangerous. It wasn’t the contaminants or toxic fumes. Outside the Winchell’s Donut House just blocks away, federal immigration agents had detained six people. The day laborers went home instead of heading to their job sites. β€œThey’re living in fear,” said Jose Madera, the director of the Pasadena Community Job Center, which earlier this year helped train about 40 immigrant workers in fire cleanup. β€œThey don’t know what can happen if they go to work β€” are they going to come back?” Immigrant workers are playing a crucial role in the recovery of Pasadena, Altadena and Pacific Palisades after the devastating fires in January. They have hauled debris, cleaned smoke-affected homes and in some cases begun reconstruction in the months since the Eaton and Palisades fires burned more than 16,000 buildings in the region. But raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have plunged workers in various occupations into a state of panic, leading many of them β€” regardless of immigration status β€” to stay home. And residents worry that the raids have already hurt recovery efforts in fire-torn neighborhoods. In two dozen interviews, residents, officials, real estate agents, contractors, community organizers and workers described ways in which the Trump administration’s raids have affected the rebuilding process in Southern California. Many of those involved agreed to speak only if they could remain anonymous because they feared retaliation from the federal government. cont'd: https://archive.is/6xqFj
  14. Just had a nice thunder boomer roll through here with a brief downpour and, now, the lingering pitterpatter of light stuff. Windows are open, and it’s 73 degrees at 12:45 pm in the middle of July.
  15. I gave this the rage-face reaction, because here we have a sitting president threatening to strip a private (albeit annoying, crazy, and vocal) citizen of their citizenship due to their constitutionally protected speech. Fuck that noise.
  16. "Mexicans aren't going anywhere." "Just the tip" with a bullet. Skeleton hand flipping the bird and words I can't read. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say @Brisketexan is pissed, unless I’m totally misreading the message here.
  17. Username checks out.
  18. Besides, USAID is dead now, but we'll still keep giving military aid to Israel.
  19. George W. Bush tried to do comprehensive immigration reform, including a guest worker program, but Lou Dobbs's nightly screeds riled up the far-right and killed it. A bunch of far-right representatives in the House then tried to pass some reactionary bullshit bill, which kicked off a bunch of protests in the mid- to late aughts. Around that time, the canard of "prayer blankets" for Muslim terrorists found in the desert got thrown into the mix to maximize the fear-mongering. Then, you tie in the current president's racist accusations that the then-current president wasn't actually a citizen, along with all the other racist conspiracy shit about him being a Muslim, and you've remade an entire party into a bunch of reactionary retreads, wholly consumed with an anti-brown bias.

  23. Back in the day, I had an Aunt Juanita who lived over there on Purdue or Yale. One of the college streets. She had one of those Jesus paintings where his eyes would follow you around the room. Hated that damn place. Edit: It was as creepy af and none of us were/are Hispanic. My dad's extended family all had weirdo names, like Iris, Elda, Royce, and Fleur. I've always chalked the name-thing to rural Southerners from a specific timeframe trying to sound "cool" or "exotic." Edit edit: If you decide to stick around, we've got a few West Texas folk who grew up in Lamesa, Andrews, Meadows (over by Brownfield), Midland, and somewhere around Lubbock. We also have a few who, at the very least, went to school at one of the bible colleges in Abilene. There have also been mentions of Sweetwater, but only as visitors who've been to the rattlesnake roundup there. (Fuck the 'Stangs!) The Coleman area is also in the mix, but I don't think I've ever come across someone from Slaton, Jayton, or Rotan on this site. I think a San Angelo guy (or two) has shown up as well.

  25. I liked this series. It somehow hit the nerd-core, mindless stupidity, subversively silly, and low-key dark aspects of my humor simultaneously. That's a rare feat. Plus, it's got a bit of heart.
