Why would ownership volunteer to double the league’s losses

But viewership is up and tickets says are up and prices for a franchise are up.

That is what I have been told on this thread at least.

Houston had the first WNBA dynasty with the Comets and there has been a lot of desire and interest locally for them to come back. It’s shocking markets the size of Houston and Miami got passed up.

Agreed on HOU.     They should have brought back the Comets.    As far as MIA goes, they sometimes have trouble filling the arena if the Heat are not good.   There may be too much to do down there for a W team LOL

Good grief.  This game is on Prime.      I fucking hate when the games are on there.   There is little to no notice as to where to watch the game.

lost $40 million, 450 rostered NBA players...

That works out to just under $89,000 per NBA player that goes to cover the WNBA losses

So basically a night in Vegas or a couple of trips to the strip club per each NBA player.

Shouldn’t they be able to write it off as a charitable donation on their taxes?

In the words of Will Ferrell's character James King, "You can't use the strip club as a home office deduction, you are just looking to get audited."

Detroit and Cleveland have history as they both had teams previously.   Being from Detroit I've seen firsthand there has been a long running push by fans to bring the Shock back.

And why did they leave? Were they selling too many tickets?

Houston once had a team, a damn good one that was the first "dynasty" in the WNBA, then Les sold them, they got bought by a Mattress Max knock off, the big three left, Van Chancellor left, the crowds left, and so did the Comets.

Economic Darwinism at its finest because when they won they sold tickets.

I think Mattress Max is the knockoff.

Max is actually a decent knock off, maybe something you might find off Harwin, Hilton on the other hand is something you buy out of a guy's trunk on the roadside next to the guy selling carpets, another selling lemonade, and another with rebel flags and fire wood.

My dad and brothers and I are currently discussing who would win if you had a gay vs. straight WNBA all-star game.

My first point was that I don't think the sexuality is all that black and white - but if you HAD to assign players...

To kick it off with the big names - Gays get Breanna Stewart, Alyssa Thomas, Jonquel Jones.

Straights get Napheesa Collier, A'ja Wilson, Caitlin Clark (allegedly).

We are all in agreement that it would be a great game.

Paid what? It's %...that's all they can get. Do they want more?

White needs to let the Fever run more instead of this inefficient half court offense. I give her credit for improving their defense but she needs to let the offense open up some. Valks are stacked with shooters.

Ogunbowale is one of my favorite players to watch. If her shot isn’t falling, and its often not, she offers nothing else.

I've been saying she's a better female version of THJ...in that when she's one she's torching everyone even more than THJ can. But when she's off she's even worse.

I actually meant *least favorite. She built a whole block worth of houses yesterday and was even worse on defense. Paige deserves better.

She's been really bad the last couple yrs now.   Gonna suck for DAL to have to cut ties with maybe their best player ever but it will have to happen if they are to improve in the short term.

Portland expansion team gets a name

I like it.     Definitely like the logo with the burning Rose

I think a lot of people fail to realize CC was just the start of an influx of a different type of talent entering the WNBA. I think the entertainment factor of the league will continue to increase and it won’t be on the back of one single player.

I love the Portland logo.

YEP!  Been saying this for a while.   CC, Paige, Juju, Hannah Hidalgo, and a lot of others will change how the league looks pretty drastically in the next 3-5 yrs.

LOL, I forgot that Portland used the Fire name before back when they had a team from 2000-02

I think that the next franchises that are in cities that once had teams will take their legacy names too.    The Shock name isnt owned by the W anymore though.

@ztejas Your girl Haley Jones is back with the Wings.  Hope she can stick this time.

Saw that lol.

Such a crazy league from a transactional standpoint. She's a good player.

I think she and Stanford beat Vic in his first year in the tourney? Is where I first saw her.

Yeah that is why I say the worry about expansion is misplaced.   There are plenty of good players like her on the edges of the league.   I'm pretty confident she will get have a stable spot in the league as the new teams ramp up.

Should have kept the burning rose and called it the Urban Campers.
