What exactly is he talking about? Most DL line up square to the LOS. Simmons lines up ready to jump in the backfield any time he’s not dropping (foolishly) into coverage.

My best guess is he saying we are doing a lot of 2-gapping on the DL and not letting the DL loose.

Haven't read a good defensive breakdown post Arky and was hoping something was linked here.  I fully realize Arky has one of the better offenses in the nation and that we were missing Hill, but from the stands, I was surprised how easily they were moving it on us most of the first half combined with shit tackling and receivers running free.  Taffe had one of his worst games I can recall.  Hopefully that was just rust and he'll be better this weekend and hopefully Hill can play, because we're going to have to have a better defensive performance than what we showed most of Arky game to win Friday.

This is going to get very negative as the week goes along and people delve into the Ark game. The middle of the field was wide open most of the game. That said Kade Phillips was really good, despite the PI.. He was 2nd on the team with a 76.6 PFF grade (Colin 91.5). That is a hell of debut for him.

  • OLB Colin Simmons, 43 snaps, 91.5 (overall grade)
  • CB Kade Phillips, 51 snaps, 76.6
  • DT Travis Shaw, 16 snaps, 76.2
  • CB Graceson Littleton, 32 snaps, 72.7
  • SS Jelani McDonald, 48 snaps, 71.5
  • DE Ethan Burke, 33 snaps, 71.4
  • FS Jonah Williams, 21 snaps, 68.5
  • SS Xavier Filsaime, 34 snaps, 67.9
  • CB Kobe Black, 27 snaps, 67.7
  • DT Maraad Watson, 33 snaps, 67.6
  • CB Jaylon Guilbeau, 20 snaps, 66.4
  • MLB Liona Lefau, 44 snaps, 65.7
  • CB Malik Muhammad, 48 snaps, 63.8
  • DT Alex January, 33 snaps, 63.3
  • MLB Ty’Anthony Smith, 35 snaps, 62.6
  • DT Cole Brevard, 23 snaps, 61.7
  • DE Colton Vasek, 19 snaps, 61.5
  • SS Michael Taaffe, 62 snaps, 61.5
  • DT Hero Kanu, 31 snaps, 59.3
  • FS Derek Williams Jr., 22 snaps, 57.9
  • DE Lance Jackson, 23 snaps, 57.7
  • OLB Brad Spence, 22 snaps, 57.6
  • DT Lavon Johnson, 17 snaps, 57.2
  • DT Melvin Hills III, five snaps, 56.7
  • CB Warren Roberson, 21 snaps, 56.0
  • DE Justus Terry, 21 snaps, 54.4
  • OLB Trey Moore, 73 snaps, 54.0
  • MLB Marshall Landwehr, 11 snaps, 52.1
  • CB Wardell Mack, 26 snaps, 51.3
  • LB Elijah Barnes, 11 snaps, 47.8
  • DE Zina Umeozulu, 17 snaps, 36.7

Man, Trey Moore played a ton of snaps more than anyone.

Moore oftentimes doesn't look good on his run fills. I thought he was recruited to be a pass-rusher?

Yes, I know he isn't gonna displace Simmons

Maybe we are saving the concept of inside leverage for A&M.

Based on what I've seen of Reed, he looks most comfortable throwing crossing routes over the middle.

We need to disrupt the timing on those and force the WRs outside more often. Gotta account for their TEs, too.

Moving him To off ball was terrible decision.

I was kinda looking forward to Moore and Simmons as bookends in our NASCAR package. I know we've been in that alignment, but it doesn't seem like it's been much lately. IDK why PK is trying to play Moore as a more traditional LB, but it ain't working against the run.

Idk if I've seen this specifically addressed knowing the snap count totals but--  is the defense simply worn the fuck down from the offense sucking so much earlier that they're just not as sharp and fast as before?

I realize management has done well overall with avoiding major injury losses but is this defense problem a matter of them playing too much overall through the course of the season?

One of the conditions of Moore’s return was more snaps at traditional LB.

Are you saying Moore (and his agent) wanted more reps at LB? I guess that's where he projects in the NFL.

If so, he needs to get a lot stronger at the point of attack.

It can't help.  Defense definitely hasn't looked the same ever since playing like 90 snaps against Kentucky.

I don't think so.

Look at the snap counts against Arky that @Codaxx posted - 30 guys got PT!

Yeah that's when things began to get slower for them after that last great series of stops

As much as I don't want to do this, I kinda want to sunshine pump the defense, yeah it started horribly but it levelled off after going 3-4 and then they half assed after the blowout occurred. It was two scores by Jackson and the second one was against the backup defense.

That said that is nowhere near the standard of earlier this season, and if I were to guess they are just panicking with roster changes plus keeping the mobile QBs in front of them.

Prepare for more of the same on Friday with Reed.

If I remember correctly Babers said  the Ark TEs had like 140 yards. Texas had a middle of the field problem. The CBs were actually fine. This has been an issue since UK. TEs have been killing Texas. There is just too much space between LBs and Safeties. My big fear is the A&M game reminds us of the Houston game a few years ago, where they just killed Texas on crossing route after crossing route. A&M has really dangerous YAC guys at WR. I think their top 2 are both top 5 nationally in YAC yards. Those guys are propping Reed up. Cleaning up the middle of the field and tackling will be a huge key to this game. If Reed can hit shots down the sideline, so be it. Force him to make throw outside the numbers and 15+ yards.

There was a play vs Georgia on the release that was Taeffe going to help Gilbleu and letting I think Humphreys wide open for a TD. The team is terrified of its own secondary, leaving sooo much uncontested space.

I agree that A&M is perfectly built to exploit this defense, I just hope PK realizes they need to play tighter coverage even with  true frosh, because they will be burned by YAC.

They are a good offense. WRs are really good. It would be the anti-PK game plan to take away the short and intermediate game and dare A&M to beat the secondary over the top.

Squaring up on blockers (two-gapping) most likely.  I don't understand the criticism because we are somewhere top 10 in havoc rate.  Maybe just for pass rush, but I don't think we really have an issue there either.  Roy's a smart guy, but I think this is just a preference for philosophy.

LB is one of the harder positions to learn and be good at.  It just takes a lot of snaps to get the feel.

I don't know why

I don't know why it is not a 1.5 gap, trust the DL to decide if it is going to be a pass or a run, the only possible reasoning is keeping the QB contained in the pocket. Even if that means less pressure.

I think Phillips is going to be damn good.   Seems like he has pretty much won that spot at this point.  Manny has been great all season.  Agreed 100% that if Reed can beat us with downfield throws tip your cap.  Have to play the middle of the field much better than we have been.
