What exactly is he talking about? Most DL line up square to the LOS. Simmons lines up ready to jump in the backfield any time he’s not dropping (foolishly) into coverage.

My best guess is he saying we are doing a lot of 2-gapping on the DL and not letting the DL loose.

Haven't read a good defensive breakdown post Arky and was hoping something was linked here.  I fully realize Arky has one of the better offenses in the nation and that we were missing Hill, but from the stands, I was surprised how easily they were moving it on us most of the first half combined with shit tackling and receivers running free.  Taffe had one of his worst games I can recall.  Hopefully that was just rust and he'll be better this weekend and hopefully Hill can play, because we're going to have to have a better defensive performance than what we showed most of Arky game to win Friday.

This is going to get very negative as the week goes along and people delve into the Ark game. The middle of the field was wide open most of the game. That said Kade Phillips was really good, despite the PI.. He was 2nd on the team with a 76.6 PFF grade (Colin 91.5). That is a hell of debut for him.

  • OLB Colin Simmons, 43 snaps, 91.5 (overall grade)
  • CB Kade Phillips, 51 snaps, 76.6
  • DT Travis Shaw, 16 snaps, 76.2
  • CB Graceson Littleton, 32 snaps, 72.7
  • SS Jelani McDonald, 48 snaps, 71.5
  • DE Ethan Burke, 33 snaps, 71.4
  • FS Jonah Williams, 21 snaps, 68.5
  • SS Xavier Filsaime, 34 snaps, 67.9
  • CB Kobe Black, 27 snaps, 67.7
  • DT Maraad Watson, 33 snaps, 67.6
  • CB Jaylon Guilbeau, 20 snaps, 66.4
  • MLB Liona Lefau, 44 snaps, 65.7
  • CB Malik Muhammad, 48 snaps, 63.8
  • DT Alex January, 33 snaps, 63.3
  • MLB Ty’Anthony Smith, 35 snaps, 62.6
  • DT Cole Brevard, 23 snaps, 61.7
  • DE Colton Vasek, 19 snaps, 61.5
  • SS Michael Taaffe, 62 snaps, 61.5
  • DT Hero Kanu, 31 snaps, 59.3
  • FS Derek Williams Jr., 22 snaps, 57.9
  • DE Lance Jackson, 23 snaps, 57.7
  • OLB Brad Spence, 22 snaps, 57.6
  • DT Lavon Johnson, 17 snaps, 57.2
  • DT Melvin Hills III, five snaps, 56.7
  • CB Warren Roberson, 21 snaps, 56.0
  • DE Justus Terry, 21 snaps, 54.4
  • OLB Trey Moore, 73 snaps, 54.0
  • MLB Marshall Landwehr, 11 snaps, 52.1
  • CB Wardell Mack, 26 snaps, 51.3
  • LB Elijah Barnes, 11 snaps, 47.8
  • DE Zina Umeozulu, 17 snaps, 36.7

Man, Trey Moore played a ton of snaps more than anyone.

Moore oftentimes doesn't look good on his run fills. I thought he was recruited to be a pass-rusher?

Yes, I know he isn't gonna displace Simmons

Maybe we are saving the concept of inside leverage for A&M.

Based on what I've seen of Reed, he looks most comfortable throwing crossing routes over the middle.

We need to disrupt the timing on those and force the WRs outside more often. Gotta account for their TEs, too.

I was kinda looking forward to Moore and Simmons as bookends in our NASCAR package. I know we've been in that alignment, but it doesn't seem like it's been much lately. IDK why PK is trying to play Moore as a more traditional LB, but it ain't working against the run.

I realize management has done well overall with avoiding major injury losses but is this defense problem a matter of them playing too much overall through the course of the season?

Are you saying Moore (and his agent) wanted more reps at LB? I guess that's where he projects in the NFL.

If so, he needs to get a lot stronger at the point of attack.

It can't help.  Defense definitely hasn't looked the same ever since playing like 90 snaps against Kentucky.

I don't think so.

Look at the snap counts against Arky that @Codaxx posted - 30 guys got PT!

Yeah that's when things began to get slower for them after that last great series of stops

As much as I don't want to do this, I kinda want to sunshine pump the defense, yeah it started horribly but it levelled off after going 3-4 and then they half assed after the blowout occurred. It was two scores by Jackson and the second one was against the backup defense.

That said that is nowhere near the standard of earlier this season, and if I were to guess they are just panicking with roster changes plus keeping the mobile QBs in front of them.

Prepare for more of the same on Friday with Reed.

If I remember correctly Babers said  the Ark TEs had like 140 yards. Texas had a middle of the field problem. The CBs were actually fine. This has been an issue since UK. TEs have been killing Texas. There is just too much space between LBs and Safeties. My big fear is the A&M game reminds us of the Houston game a few years ago, where they just killed Texas on crossing route after crossing route. A&M has really dangerous YAC guys at WR. I think their top 2 are both top 5 nationally in YAC yards. Those guys are propping Reed up. Cleaning up the middle of the field and tackling will be a huge key to this game. If Reed can hit shots down the sideline, so be it. Force him to make throw outside the numbers and 15+ yards.

There was a play vs Georgia on the release that was Taeffe going to help Gilbleu and letting I think Humphreys wide open for a TD. The team is terrified of its own secondary, leaving sooo much uncontested space.

I agree that A&M is perfectly built to exploit this defense, I just hope PK realizes they need to play tighter coverage even with  true frosh, because they will be burned by YAC.

They are a good offense. WRs are really good. It would be the anti-PK game plan to take away the short and intermediate game and dare A&M to beat the secondary over the top.

Squaring up on blockers (two-gapping) most likely.  I don't understand the criticism because we are somewhere top 10 in havoc rate.  Maybe just for pass rush, but I don't think we really have an issue there either.  Roy's a smart guy, but I think this is just a preference for philosophy.

LB is one of the harder positions to learn and be good at.  It just takes a lot of snaps to get the feel.

I don't know why it is not a 1.5 gap, trust the DL to decide if it is going to be a pass or a run, the only possible reasoning is keeping the QB contained in the pocket. Even if that means less pressure.

I think Phillips is going to be damn good.   Seems like he has pretty much won that spot at this point.  Manny has been great all season.  Agreed 100% that if Reed can beat us with downfield throws tip your cap.  Have to play the middle of the field much better than we have been.

A couple things to hit on here.

Defensive snap counts.  This isn’t really an issue, at least over the long haul. The guys that have logged the most snaps individually have missed time.  Hill, Taaffe, McDonald, Manny and Guilbeau.  Simmons has had some high snap counts but if you were to compare versus a guy like Jack Sawyer last year, it’s not out of the norm.  With our schedule, we probably missed some brutal heat intensive games too.  We’ve had two bye weeks.

What is likely happening is that we’re playing teams with talent and experience along with some solid QBs.  Mix in a few injuries.  I don’t know that we let off the gas defensively, but Vandy was a screw up or two. Then Arkansas was tons of rotation.  We saw the same last year.  When we played quality, they had some success.

Without breaking it down, I suspect we play a lot of matchup football on defense.  Respect the speed on the outside versus MSU.  Versus Arkansas and their 7 yards per carry, you have to prepare for the run, particularly given your big LBer is out.  Georgias gameplan was quite good.  Two TEs, some 4 wide.  Vandy is multiple.  I haven’t checked this week but Vandy and Georgia were #1 and #2 in OFEI last week.  Even Kentucky has found some offense with their QB.

Posted

I think it is clear the defensive output has been less than the sum of its parts. The coaching and scheme has been bad at LB and DB. There is a lack of cohesion and coordination between the back 7 that is hard to understand, really. We have good athletes, not good football players. Or at least not improving football players.

For completeness he often doesn't look good in coverage either.

Moore to pure LB and Guilbeau to CB were both moves requested / demanded by the players in order to help their draft stock. Both guys should have stayed where they were (edge / nickel). I get that our pitch in recruiting is that we'll get them ready for the NFL, but you have to evaluate your players accurately. Putting a guy in a position he can't handle is going to have the opposite of the desired effect for the draft.

There just needs to be an attitude shift from the staff. You can be player-led when you have guys like Rojo, Whittington, or Barron in the locker room. We just don't have a Rojo this year.

Yeah, seems like opposing offenses have found something with Taafe in coverage. He is flying downhill to support the run and letting TEs slip out behind him. Do your job and trust your teammates is what coach should be telling him this week. Taafe has busted coverage multiple times since he has been back. On the second level Moore is just slow to recognize, which is to be expected from someone who has very little experience there. It didn't help that we played quite a few 3 man fronts, which means you are going to have to navigate a lot more traffic than usual. We also aren't as physically strong on the interior of our D-line as we have been in the past. Guys were getting moved around early in the game until we made some adjustments.

I'm not entirely convinced Taafe is busting. I think that is what he is being told to do. He is attacking too aggressively (and consistently) for me to think it is purely player error.

Agreed. He's trying to do too much and doesn't have the speed to try to do two jobs at once. That's always been a problem for Taaffe and you really only saw it go away when he had another AA / Thorpe award type in the backfield with him. Guilbeau has struggled at CB and Derek Williams just isn't the same since he came back from injury. Littleton will be a stud, but he's too young right now.

At the moment, I'm pointing the finger at Akina. It's not just that these guys don't look ready to play, it's schematic as well. The DB's are out of position and their "attitude" (on their heels or on their toes) is usually wrong for the context.

I wouldn't necessarily say physical limitations Saw. He just never really had to be the coverage guy. We always had a guy for that, while he got to do his best to impersonate Troy Polamalu.

Have you had a second watch? I mean, I am taking an educated guess as to what the coverage is but hard to imagine in those scenarios it wasn't his responsibility.

I am with you. You have Taafe, McDonald, and Manny busting coverages. If you saw 1 guy busting or maybe 2, you blame the players. When the busts are pervasive, it is a coaching issue. Somewhere along the way the communication is breaking down.

Yeah, when I rewatched, it was hard to even tell who was busting the coverage.  There was a rail to the RB where nobody was within 10 yards of him, as soon as the ball was snapped.  Both safeties were on either side of the line of scrimmage.  Other times, like when their TE got behind the second level on play action, it looked like we played one high safety but not man?  It was very confusing.  Almost like we're calling junk defense.

That might have been cover 3 so maybe the CB.  Or maybe S.  The opposite Cb looked to be over the top.  Lbs were not aggressively attacking other eligible receivers.

I question whether he’s trying too hard to be Troy.  If he’s busting zone coverage, he has always had to do that except to the extent that we’re less dominating on the interior than we’ve been in several years.  Plus this years offenses are far more competent than last years regular season opponents.

The RB release mentioned above was my thought on Taaffe.  He’s Troying it.  At some point he realized the RB released, but it was too late.

Point to a single play in which speed has anything to do with it.  Several years ago people blamed him for shit that likely wasn’t his doing.  That may be some of that, but it’s more likely this time around that he’s been too aggressive attacking the run.  So, yeah, maybe he’s trying to do too much, but speed has nothing to do with it.

I actually have the play clipped.

It looks like Cover 1 presnap that rolls to Cover 3 and Manny forgot the call. If it's man, then it's on Taafe. I am only saying Cover 3 based on how the other side of the field played it with the corner digging deep and them passing off the crosser. Fucked up play for sure.

Believe that was Cover 3. That play is where the WR motions across. Assume Manny has the deep 1/3 and Taaffe would have the flat. Manny got over-aggressive without an immediate threat. Bit on the run fake and Ark slipped the TE behind him. He makes the OH SHIT turn when he sees it is a pass.

That is man and I am not sure what the hell is going on. Looks like McDonald or Taaffe has the RB. No way McDonald can get there though from his alignment, but he feigns a blitz and takes off immediately after the RB. Taaffe goes but turns when he sees the RB pass him. You would think it is Taaffe's guy but I do not know based on how the 2 safeties reacted. I may lean to this is just a great offensive play call vs the defensive call.

Just way too aggressive and ignoring first responsibilities.  Not acceptable from our most experienced DBs.

Honestly, I think is just an example of outsmarting ourselves with the call. McDonald starts running to the back almost immediately, so I have to think it is his man. The pressure look from Taafe was probably supposed to coincide with McDonald rotating over.

I think we got outsmarted here.  Petrino does some nice things.  He got the TE isolated several times.

Notice our edge guy up top.  Unblocked.  I’d wager we expected the Oline to block right with the back picking up backside.  Maybe we were hoping to iso our bigger guy versus the RB.

It is too coincidental that McDonald backed off immediately then chased.  It probably was his man but was in an incredibly difficult position.
