In that case Juneteenth makes far more sense because it’s a day that the people in Texas were unequivocally no longer slaves. His comment was that neither made sense.

(In case anyone is confused why we celebrate July 4th and not the date when Great Britian called it quits)

I do get a kick out of co-workers' look of astonishment when told the story about the situation from which it originated.  A lot of folks, even Texans, have not a clue.  Granted, the situation is not something to be proud of- it was 2 freaking months after the War ended, I do like what the holiday represents today.

If you really want to freak them out, tell them Texans went to war twice to preserve slavery. The first time after Mexico outlawed it on September 15, 1929.

My family has some skeletons in the genealogical closet.

I first learned about Juneteenth in 1995, when I as a 13 year old Nebraskan was visiting my Aunt and Uncle who farm near Giddings. My Uncle explained the history to me, and then I was introduced to brisket(the dish, not the poster) for the first time when we went over to a guy he knew that was celebrating by feeding smoked meats in his shed. Seemed to me like everyone should have adopted Juneteenth a lot faster if that was how it was celebrated.

His lack of any actually policy is astounding. He’s called a populist sometimes but is shitting on working people having a day off. People talk about a 4 day work week but if I were king I’d just add more holidays, at least two per month, have a fan poll on what to celebrate, just give me more days to sleep in and fire up the grill.
