Picking up a Glock 10 mm I bought on sale from PSA today.  Need something for bears in addition to spray as I do a lot of summer hiking in bear country (Montana).  Glocks aren't pretty.  But they sure are functional.  Wanted something bigger than my 9mm and more capacity than my Sig 45.  Bought some 220 grain ammo made for big game to pair with it.

You want buffalo bore 210

Picked up my first Ruger today. MKIV 22/45 Tactical. Had already purchased a Holosun 507C-GR-X2 with the ACSS reticle. Maybe a better question for Handcrusr but anyone know where to get a comparable Picc mount for the optic? And which one? TIA

I’m telling you, Holosun

So I’m the idiot. My bad!

It’s probably fine. They make all their shit in China but so do most. They are releasing something new in the next few months so that will be interesting.

They’re about to get a lot less desirable I think.

Seriously though, after my MIL used her tiny potmetal Titan .25 to scare off a late night intruder who was attempting to to break in her house 40 years ago, I bought her this new S&W Model 36 Chief’s Special .38.
much simpler for her to operate than the Titan, which would’ve jammed because it was not loaded properly (one too many rounds stuffed into the little magazine).

After some minimal instruction & a brief proficiency session at a landfill dump, she was satisfied she could handle it.

YMMV

Grandma wants pistol for self defense.

Single action revolver?

Pump action shot gun?

Glock with 30 round mag?

Revolver is the easiest to understand (double action) - has obvious limitations with capacity and reload times.  I'd look at a .38sp

No on the shotgun.  Big, loud, hard to handle quickly.  First shot will disorient her.  She'll probably "short-stroke" the second.  Limited capacity, over-penetration with surrounding walls with 00 shot (which most suggest)

If you do get a pistol, I'd get a .380 S&W semi-auto she can keep in her purse in a holster.

Does she live alone?  I'd start with reinforced doors/windows, a can of mace, an alarm/camera system, and a territorial dog.  Even a small, yappy dog will let you know people are near the house

The S&W M&P 380 Shield EZ would be a good choice for a pistol.
It’s designed for easier racking of the slide.

She lives with grandpa and have all of the other security items listed except the dog.

They had an intruder last night and called cops, neighbors etc but still only a front door between them and the possible intruder. She has shot long guns all her life but want something “brainless” that is just muscle memory as a last line of defense. Afraid a slide rack might be difficult as strength wains

Her neighbor met the person outside with his pistol before they ran off and jumped into a vehicle.

PCC?  Pistol caliber carbine like the Ruger PC?  Uses standard pistol mags.  Has a safety.  It's a carbine so the "long gun" feel is there to be able to use both hands and anchor to your shoulder and you can get higher capacity mags for the invariable first few shots that miss.  Just pull back the oversized handle to chamber a round and you are good.  Very little felt recoil, not "too" loud, easy to handle, lightweight.

AND a big ass can of bear spray or mace to keep by the doors just in case.  In case the dude has a knife or something or a bat.  Don't need to put holes in them, just get them to move on.

If you go this route, keep it locked up but chambered.  It should be ready to go.

Those takedown carbines are cool.

if we are just talking about home defense (no carry) get granny a basic S&W 686 revolver and load it with 38SPL Hornady Critical Defense Lite and she'll have no trouble shooting it

a light revolver with a 2 inch barrel (like an S&W airweight) might offend granny's senses

This granny had trouble shooting .38 specials out of my New Vaquero.
Too heavy she said.

None of them are great options but I’d lean towards the revolver.

If you do I’d look hard at the K6 line by kimber. A little pricier but I always liked them - sold quite a few.

In reality a single shot shotgun wouldn’t be awful - let’s be honest, people are running after the first shot. There won’t be a second shot

Revolver allows her to take it with her and is more pleasant to shoot. I hope ahead goes to the range and practices a few times.

I never sold revolvers to younger women - let’s say 50 and under. Most of the time their “boyfriend” told them to get a revolver because it was easier to operate. What happens is they then go home, stick it in a drawer, and have no idea how to use it 1 year from now or 3 year from now.
