2022 Texas Softball - Locked and Loaded

Only 3 of the top 8 teams made it to OKC - the lowest since the super regional format started in 2005.  FSU, VT, Alabama, Arkansas, ASU all failed to advance, with 2 of those not even winning their regional.  Arkansas, ASU and VT all lost in 3 games.

Only 2 of the seeded, non-national seeds made it to OKC - pretty much the average.  5 of the 8 seeded, non-national seeds advanced to supers, but only Northwestern and Florida advanced.  UCF, Duke, Clemson all lost - all of them in 2.

3 unseeded teams is the highest ever - usually 0 or 1.

Combination of parity, some huge regional upsets (Stanford, Oregon State, Arizona, Miss St), super senior rosters and some teams who were very underseeded (Texas).

If any year was the year to re-seed the WCWS, it's this year, with 3 unseeded teams.

If we re-seeded it, it would go:

#1 OU (#1 overall seed)
#2 UCLA (#5 overall seed)
#3 Ok State (#7 overall seed)
#4 Northwestern (#9 overall seed)
#5 UF (#14 overall seed)
#6 Texas (highest RPI of the unseeded teams at #14)
#7 Oregon State (RPI #37)
#8 Arizona (RPI #43)

Current day 1 pairings: NW-OU, Texas-UCLA, Oregon State-UF, Arizona-OK State

Under a hypothetical reseed: Arizona-OU, UF-Northwestern, Oregon State-UCLA, Texas-OK State

I, for one, feel better opening up in Arky's spot with UCLA, rather than getting reseeded to OK State for a potential 5th loss this season.

Texas can match up with UCLA on two conditions...Dolcini must be available to pitch, and the defense can not give up 5 outs an inning.

UCLA has a two headed beast at pitcher, in Faraimo and Azavedo. I am guessing we see Faraimo on Thursday and she is a big powerful arm. Texas must make her throw strikes, and can not chase early in the count. We should know which Texas team shows up early in this game. If we can get to 5th with a lead or tie, I like our chances.

sure but it is hard to beat a team 5 times in a season...

The broadcasters brought this up last week but with the new scheduling format there's even more benefit to getting to the winner's bracket. With a day off you can potentially ride your best arm.

If Texas beat UCLA with Dolcini my guess is she would pitch against OU. But who knows if they now have confidence in Simpson.

Yup. Win Thursday, off until Saturday. Win Saturday, off until Monday.  Champ game participants get a day off before the series too

Lose Thursday, play Friday to stay alive, off until Sunday if you win, play Monday if you stay alive on Sunday

Win Thursday, play Saturday and lose, then have to play Sunday and Monday to stay alive

Hypothetically if we beat UCLA but lose to OU, will we play the elimination games on the other bracket? Iirc they shuffle teams around if they lose

Yes, they first posted the bracket without the flip, but the loser of the 1-0 game will flip brackets.

Hypothetically, we would play and beat UCLA on Thursday, play and lose to OU on Saturday, then flip down and play the loser of the other 1-0 game on Sunday.  This happened our last trip - we beat ASU, then OU knocked us into the other bracket after kicking our ass in the 1-0 game, where we knocked out Florida and then lost to Tennessee.

Mike White is 1-6 versus the Pac 12 in the WCWS

2012 - lost 1-3 to ASU and lost 3-6 to Cal (1-1 versus ASU in the regular season and 1-2 versus Cal in the regular season)
2015 - lost 1-7 to UCLA (2-1 versus UCLA in the regular season)
2016 - lost 1-3 to UW (1-2 versus UW in the regular season)
2018 - beat ASU 11-6 and lost to UW 2-6 (2-1 versus ASU in the regular season and 3-0 versus UW)

4 out of his 5 trips, he faced a Pac 12 team in the opener and lost.

Texas lost to UCLA 2-1 in Clearwater on February 19.  Simpson gave up two runs in the first (run on a passed ball and a solo HR) and Texas scored in the 2nd on RBI single by Lou Gilbert after an error.

Simpson - 5 IP, 6 hits, 2 ER, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts, 92 pitches
Czech - 1 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 K on 16 pitches

Faraimo - 7 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 1 walk, 6 K on 107 pitches

I like that we've seen their ace this year and they haven't seen 2022 Dolcini yet (if she is good to go).   Neither Alyssa Washington nor Alyssa Popelka batted in that game.

UCLA saw her in the 2021 LA Regional - 7.2 IP, 11 hits, 5 ER, 3 walks, 5 K in 144 pitches (all runs in the 7th and 8th innings).

Wet day in OKC,  AM showers Thurs supposed to clear by game time.

Doubt if they were able to take infield.   If we play clean,  like our chances.

Let’s fucking go. Shock everyone. Team has been counted out, disrespected, snubbed and slighted. Huge chip on their shoulders. Dolcini, Jefferson, LB, Mary and Mak deserve a great showing in OKC

Not going to look up the first team, but who in the world would anybody rather have than Jefferson?

I looked- the 2b from ou was unanimous 1st team. Didn’t look at her stats though.

arky had the 1st team 1b,3b, an outfielder, and an “at-large” selection plus their pitcher was 2nd team.

UW SS was the other infielder so we have eliminated a large portion of the 1st team, mostly ou players left.

not sure why JJ couldn’t have gotten one of the “at-large” 1st team honors if they wouldn’t give her the 2b spot.

She's prob the best 2B in the country, with JJ a close second.

Even though Jennings only hit .385, she hit 24 bombs, 72 RBI, 8-9 SB, .982 fielding

Jefferson .431, 6 HR, 16-18 SB, but that .960 fielding dings her
