That I can understand because Castro is done.  Brantley can still hit.

Slugging his 4 years with Houston:

503, 476, 437, 416

OPS- 875, 840, 799, 786

he’s getting older.  He’s participated in less games every year by percentage.  I’m sure he’s been hurting for a long time.

As far as I can tell, he seems to be slightly below average in LF. He won a GG in 2019, but that doesn't mean much.

Slightly below average in LF seems to be our sweet spot. It’s not like MMP is a tough left field though, so that should be just fine.

The beautiful thing about how the Astros operate is that they rarely are stuck with bad contracts. It’s no accident that Yuli, Brantley and Castro all will be free agents at the end of the year.

They all got one more year than was valuable for the team. It didn’t hurt the team on any of them.  It was probably add that year or they don’t sign. It’s somewhat unlucky they came up 0-3, but yeah- no harm done at all.

The team probably felt great after Yuli and Brantley’s 2021. Remember they finished 1, 2 in BA. It’s difficult to know exactly when health and production is going to crater. Fortunately, the team’s approach takes a lot of the guesswork out of it.

Hell- even Castro they had to like what they had from him after last year. They could reasonably expect 2/3 deals to be worth it this year- instead it looks like they are poised to go 0/3.
because walk year bats are pretty cheap they can certainly cover that bad luck in the next 4 days. They don’t have to hope they situation turns around and they have the money and pieces to do whatever they want.

Sometimes that approach can backfire. Verlander’s latest contract is a good example. Unless, as I suspect, that structure was JV’s idea. In that case, enjoy the cheap year and get ready to write a bigger check

Yeah. I would have been fine with 3/80 with a 4th year vesting option for JV last year. That was my suggestion I believe. I just am not spooked by TJ. And he was Cy young before the injury. I’m happy he’s back as good as he’s been this year and it certainly wasn’t guaranteed, but I did suspect he would be very good. I also think you can count on him to be at least well above average for another 3 years. I’d give him 3/100 with a vesting option or an out if he wanted it.

Harold Reynolds just said he doesn't see the fit of Bell in Houston lmao. He was like "what are they gonna do not play Gurriel?"

So you’re saying hitting in front of Yordan is better than hitting in front of Chas or Jake?
