We went to Potente with another couple this weekend.  We had a bunch of different things and they were all outstanding.  Here is the run down:

CAST IRON SEARED DIVER SCALLOP

PETITE SPAGHETTI AL TARTUFO NERO  w/ white truffles and an order with black truffles

BAYOU CITY CHICHARRON

SALMORIGLIO GRILLED BEEF

I know I must be leaving something off, but I can't remember what it was.  All of the above was delicious.  We sat at the bar and watched the President's Cup.  We followed it up with a couple of frames at the Lucky Strike downtown.  It was a fun little Friday and Potente was excellent. I would highly recommend stopping in one evening.

Edit:  I remembered what the something else was, but I can't find it on the menu.  It was a panko crusted seafood "ball" which came in an order of four with some sort of orange-ish sauce dripped on the plate.  These may have been the best things I ate all night which is really saying something.

Rainbow Lodge. I’ll give them credit for having balls and moving out of the current Brenner’s on the Bayou location. They saw the potential of Greater Heights before many real estate developers did.

That said their Wild Game Mixes Grill is a shadow of Brennan’s and Hudson Bend (RIP). Game usually needs a nice sauce. To lightly season it, grill it, and serve it on top of grits doesn’t work. Very bland, lean meat.

The Friday Burger is pretty good. Elk, bison, and ribeye. Good to great duck gumbo. They do quarts of gumbo to go for $18. Very reasonable lunch and happy hour menus.

One pet peeve: parking is valet only. I get that they have a small lot, but this bullshit is an Inner Loop money grab city wide. There’s no reason to do it during non-peak hours.

That was a question Houston Press Editor-in-chief Margaret Downing and I struggled with after my visits to KUU. In January 2010, former restaurant critic Robb Walsh decided that it did upon going to the now-closed Branchwater Tavern and finding every single space in the parking lot coned off. His answer was to run over one of the cones and go inside anyway, despite the protests of the valet. His response: "Call a tow truck, I'm going in the restaurant."

RIP Branchwater. I think we usually walked there.

Clark’s is great little restaurant in the Montrose. But of course, it’s valet only. I parked way in the back of the lot, out of sight from the valet stand. Sure enough, I’m walking into the restaurant and some valet runs up to me and tells me I must give him my keys and take a ticket. I just left.

I parked in a little ditch at Rainbow Lodge on Friday.

Moral of the story, fuck valet only.

Back to the affordable steakhouse well. Saltgrass has a pretty outstanding one. $3 drafts, $4 Rita’s, $5 wines, and I believe their cocktails are $6. The bacon wrapped quail is $13, and its outstanding. They do the traditional quail hunter way with cream cheese and jalapeño. The wrapping is so tight and well done it’s like eating a drumstick. They also give you a full side of their excellent brussel sprouts with it. It could easily be an entree.

I’d skip the crap cakes. The steak bites are pretty good and only 7 bucks.

I will say the Memorial winos frustrate me some. It’s usually standing room only at the bar of most of the restaurants in the hood. Spending every night at the same bar is no way to go through life. It’s a lot cheaper to drink at home.

Good to very good bone in pork chop at Guadalajara. I’m just a surprised as y’all are. Quail is good too, but they serve it with some heavy butter dipper.

Lamb chops are back at Longhorn Steakhouse. They’re very big for that cut, well marinated, and taste great. It’s under $30 for about 12-14 ounces of lollipops. You can’t do better. Just for Lent/Easter so hurry up.

I wondered where all the Mason Jar drunks ended up.

Shanghai River and Lola closed in February.

I didn't think much of Shanghai River, but it was a bit of an institution, and very popular during Christmas.

Lola is a blow. My wife and I ate there almost once a week for a decade+. The food was still good, and it was usually busy. I assume it was a rent dispute. Back in the day, Lola and Yale Street were the only restaurants in historic Heights.

Technically good but didn't blow me away.

Try River Oaks Donuts for klobasnik. They use Prasek’s sausage. The jalapeño and cheese is pretty darned close Hruska’s.

This article is a decade old. You can easily roll up to Kuu (which is just as good as Uchi and Uchiko) with no valet.  Kuu is truly a seriously underrated restaurant.

I don't even like Sushi, and I loved Kuu

Wife and I went to Latuli last night in Memorial.  Bryan Caswell is the chef.  Really enjoyed it.  Has a lot of Italian dishes but other things as well.  We ordered 3 shareables and the food was great.  Caswell's partner who owns the building is a Longhorn and was in the real estate business.  She built the space and it is beautiful.  She came and chatted with us and is a very nice/classy woman.  Highly recommend it.

Wow. That is next door to my office from like a decade ago. I think it was a bank for years and years.

Pretty solid lunch at Carrabba’s on Kirby. Johnny of course opened the door for me, haha. Veal marsala with tagliarini picchi pacchiu. Best damn pasta I’ve had a long time, but the veal cutlets could have been bigger. I should have taken a picture because they plated it well.

I’ll be back for osso buco on Wednesdays.
