How crazy is it that we didn't give up a single home run all of WCWS?  I know that's  obvious with the zero ERA for Kavan, but even the others kept the ball in the park.

I could be wrong but doesnt our ballpark play a lot smaller? I would guess thats a big reason our pitchers had more success.

No it plays a lot bigger bc of the high fences.

It’s amazing to think of the hurdles they overcame and all the ways it could have fallen apart.  It takes so much to get to OKC and especially to a championship series and if you fail, you’re never guaranteed to have that opportunity again.   I think about what if Lendale White converts 4th and 1 or any of the other plays that could have ended the National Championship game with USC hoisting the trophy.  Your legacy is completely different when you win it.  They can never take it away from you.  Second place is mostly forgotten except for the die hard fans.
Thank you for a thrilling ride and adding significantly to the legacy of Texas sports.  It was a pleasure to have watched it.

So what are they going to tell all the transfers and Freshmen they brought in last year waiting their turn? It seems like the Freshmen will eventually will realize if you go to Tech, you're going to get recruited over and go elsewhere.

OU has been recruiting over players for years.  They seem to be doing okay.

Doesn't matter they're paying to try and win a championship. Oklahoma does this all the time.

Yep. To be around the upper end of nearly every team sport you have to keep trying to make your existing roster obsolete. Hard job for the coaches to make it all work, but bringing in better talent is the only way to become great and stay that way. Gasso continues to teach a masterclass in that.

Yes and no. I’m glad Texas was a home built team. Only 3 transfers with significant playing time, and 2 have been here for more than a year (Mac and Joley). KB came from ACU and was not supposed to be playing every day

Reese, Goode, Mia, Stewie, Henry, Maloney, TK, Cam, Cit, Katie C - Longhorns through and through.

Mike built a championship team instead of buying it in the portal

Ou is about the only program that can do some unethical things and it never having a negative impact. But the programs trying to do the right thing need to make HS recruits well aware of who is selling them ocean front property in AZ. Tech is now taking it to a whole new level.

MW only brought in Bennett for depth and publicly stated he would not go after Canady. Tech thought they could buy a NC and failed. Nothing is better than seeing the sad faces on their players and fans. Just hope the honest coaches are doing a very good job of pointing out the dishonest.

Gasso has basically given up on developing HS pitching since Paige Parker. Just rent-an-ace every year now, and your top pitching recruit comes in, doesn’t develop and leaves or languishes for years in Norman

Don’t forget about this moment. 🤘 Texas was on the brink of elimination in Game 2 of Supers against Clemson. But the Longhorns found a way. Two weeks from that moment, they were crowned NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!

Every time I think about this moment (winning run on 3rd, no outs, about to get sent home early), it reminds me of Tennessee having match point on Texas Volleyball in 2023.  We come back to win that set, win the match and then waltz our way to the title, including getting to the champ game against some teams that should have, on paper, kicked our ass (Stanford, Wisconsin = OU, Tennessee)

Are we expected to be active in the portal?

It would likely depend on departures, and I really only expect players like Citlaly or Hunter to be on the way out.

We bring in a big freshman class of 7 really good players.

Roster (? means staying or going)

Pitcher - TK, Cam Salmon, Hannah Wells, Citlaly (?)

Catcher - Reese, Anne Wallace (Stewie can catch as well)

Infield - Goode, Vivi, Bennett, Brister (?), Caigan Crabtree, MaTaia Lawson, Jaycie Nichols, Aundrea Wilson

Outfield - Stewie, Henry, Maloney, Alisa Sneed

Utility - Hunter (?), Wallace (?), Rachel Wells (?)

If Cit leaves, we will likely be interested in a pitcher, and I hope we go for a lefty.  We should probably aim for an OF and corner IF, since we are replacing both Mia and Joley.

I do not think we will be super active - Mike has not been the most active portal coach.  Only 2 seasons has he picked up more than 2 transfer (year 1 and 2022).  The transfer list is littered with busts who basically ended up giving up softball.

2019 - Burke, Elish, Iakopo and Rhodes transfer with him
2020 - Colleen Sullivan
2021 - Bri Cantu, Molly Jacobsen
2022 - Bella Dayton, Lou Gilbert, Estelle Czech, Logan Hulon, Hailey Dolcini
2023 - Baylea Brandon, Mac Morgan
2024 - Joley Mitchell
2025 - Kaydee Bennett

We do need to go after someone who can DP/1B and hit above .350 at that position with power. first and foremost, because how we won the title with 3 DPs hitting under .250 is insane.

Looking at this list in terms of Burnt Ends NIL opportunity girls like Maloney, K-Stew, or Goode would be the best for that. TK and Reese will get theirs.

I saw that Crabtree girl tore it up in the state tourney.

Would probably be smart to get a legit #2 to go with TK, especially if Cit leaves. TK, Salmon, and a portal addition could be pretty good. Salmon looked solid for a freshmen.

Any corner IF's in the portal? Is there actually a good portal website for softball to look at this stuff?

Softball America and D1 softball have them. But behind paywalls

the corner IF I am watching is Tallen Edwards at OKST. She entered early and hasn’t picked anywhere yet. I’m sure some may have been told to wait until Texas got back to Austin

I read we are also pursuing OF Dakota Kennedy from Arizona. Career .398 with 27 HR, more walks than strikeouts and 22 SB. Would be a huge get to move Stewie back to the infield at 1st, to pair with Edwards.  We’d have one of the fastest OF trios in softball

You add in the number of errors and unearned runs given up it's even more insane. I doubt if another team has ever given up as many errors and unearned runs in the WCWS at all, much less giving up so many and still winning it all.

Makes what TK did even more impressive

We went 10-2 this postseason with basically 1 elite starting pitcher, some above average pitching behind her, and what was basically an 8 woman offense playing kickball on the infield defense

Mac finally getting her head out of her ass in post season especially against Tennessee was a life saver IMO.

This was mentioned upthread (long before WCWS tho), but does Edwards have enough pop for us to be interested?  She is great in the field, but only batted .282 with 3HR, which may be too low for MW.  I think he wants a bigger bat in that role.  As we discussed, Mia only recently blossomed into the vacuum at 3rd.

I’ve not been overly impressed with OKST’s hitting coaches and philosophies. She did hit 6 HR in 2024

Joley’s hitting stats at ND her first2 years were .234 and 0 HR, .340 and 1 HR

Texas just made a joke of the old adage, "Defense wins championships." Although along the way there were some epic defensive plays made in clutch situations, we'd all agree it was far from a strong season in that regard.

In terms of our 2025 roster, I love that it was assembled as it was. A largely homegrown team despite having another of the best homegrown players in the land not even playing an inning all season. Texas fans should be proud of how this squad was constructed and developed. Credit to White and his staff for that.

Going forward will be interesting. We know future major college champions in every team sport are likely to be a strategic mix of talent from various sources. Toward the end, not even master recruiter and developer Nick Saban was doing it all with his own HS recruits. I don't think Sark, Schloss, Miller or Schaefer will ever try to prove they can. And no matter how well White recruits from the HS ranks, he'd be crazy not to keep adding transfers strategically. I look forward to seeing who comes aboard over the next few weeks to bolster a strong freshmen class. The idea is to keep adding better talent than you already have.

I do hope adding transfers remains the exception and not the rule in Austin, in all sports and in all cases not involving transition classes. I'd even love it if the vast majority of our players in all sports continue to be from within Texas, but that's an increasingly tough stance to maintain in such a competitive athletic landscape.

There was an articles in the AAS about the roster Texas built and Mike’s core philosophy is the best in Texas HS softball need to stay in state and come to Texas. With the exception of elite talent you can lure to Austin, like TK (Indiana) and Stewie (Illinois) last year and the year before (Vivi from Arizona)

I foresee this team continuing to be built on the back of recruits that Mike develops + a few transfers to fill holes

https://www.statesman.com/story/sports/college/longhorns/softball/2025/06/08/why-texas-coach-mike-white-didn-t-use-many-transfers-to-build-wcws-roster/84101629007/

OKLAHOMA CITY — When Texas softball coach Mike White took over the Longhorns’ program in 2019 after nine successful seasons at Oregon, he didn’t exactly find a bare cupboard.

But there were more plastic plates than fine China in the cabinets, and White knew that he had to upgrade the talent that had slowly leaked away from the Longhorns in the final years under former coach Connie Clark.

White’s work on the recruiting trail paid off in full Friday, when Texas beat Texas Tech 10-4 in the third and final game of the best-of-three finals in the Women’s College World Series.

“One of the things I wanted to do (first) was recruit the best kids, keep the best kids in Texas,” the former men's fastpitch star said. “A lot of our best kids were playing for other programs.”

How Mike White took advantage of rule changes

But keeping the state’s best players in state proved particularly tricky when White first arrived in Austin. Back then, college softball coaches were identifying the top players in middle school and offering them scholarships before they ever threw a pitch or swung a bat at the high school level.

That meant the 2021 recruiting class — which, for Texas, featured key players on this year’s championship squad like third baseman Mia Scott and outfielder Ashton Maloney — was the initial group that White could fully commit to throughout a full recruiting cycle.

“It was difficult because you had the early recruiting that was happening,” said White, who turns 58 this year. “So, if you missed out on that cycle, it took you a while to get that (recruiting class) through.”

The rules have since changed, and college coaches can’t contact a recruit until Sept. 1 of their junior season in high school. But White quickly figured out all the best routes on the recruiting trails, especially in the state of Texas. That helped him build a roster reliant on traditional recruits rather than transfers, which contrasts heavily with Texas Tech and several other teams in this year’s WCWS.

Florida and Tennessee, two of Texas' WCWS opponents, were largely built through high school recruiting, but each had at least three transfers as regular contributors. Three of Tech's top-four leaders in at-bats transferred in as well as its ace pitcher. The lineup for Oklahoma, the previous defending champions, features impressive homegrown talent; still, four different transfers took over 100 at-bats this season.

Of the 20 players on this year’s Texas roster, all but three have been with the Longhorns since their freshman seasons.

“Because of the recruiting rules, you have to wait for things to go through,” White said. “You start getting the top recruits. We feel like we're starting to get into that with top recruits coming in.”

'Build this as we go'

White, who was born in New Zealand but has live in the U.S. for decades, has shown an ability to key in on Texas' top talent.

The 2023 class featured five players who earned All-Big 12 freshman honors with the Longhorns, including catcher Reese Atwood, infielder Leighann Goode, infielder Vivi Martinez, pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez and Maloney, who had redshirted her first season.

Atwood (Tuloso Midway High School), Goode (San Antonio O’Connor) and Gutierrez (Stamford) all played high school ball in Texas. All played major roles during this season’s championship run.

The 2024 signing class includes three more major contributors to this year’s team, including outfielder Kayden Henry, pitcher Teagan Kavan and utility Katie Stewart. Kavan (Iowa) and Stewart (Illinois) came from the Midwest, but Henry (Dickinson) continued a strong recruiting pipeline White has established into the Houston area.

In-state recruiting continues to look strong for White and his program. Next year’s freshman class includes four Texans among its seven signees.

Pitcher Hannah Wells will be the most familiar with the Longhorns’ home turf at McCombs Field; she recently led tiny Coahoma to a third consecutive Class 3A state championship while earning her second state most valuable player honor.

McCombs Field hosts the state championship across all classifications.

“We have a big class coming in next year,” White said. “We hope we can continue to build this as we go.”

Okay. Paige Parker graduated in 2018. That’s 7 recruiting classes and her hit rate on developing top pitchers from HS into collegiate aces is Jordy Bahl and…?

Vestal - transferred

Rains - transferred

MacAdoo - medically retired

Nicole May - career #2/3

Emma Guthrie - transferred

Deal - career #2/3

SJ Guerin - transferred

Audrey Lowry  - 43 innings

She needed G Juarez, Maxwell and Trautwein for her dynasty, plus Bahl. Then Landry and now Berzon

If im a HS pitcher, I wonder why she has turned one HS recruit into an ace since Parker graduated and won her other titles on the back of a stud rental.

Yep….we won in spite of our infield issues….funny, but at times we played awesome infield defense, then….just look like we had no clue….the Stewie at short debacle really strained our players….and the fans.

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with you(mainly because fuck Gasso and OU) just saying that Bahl counts as HS pitcher that was good under her since Parker but Bahl was Bahl, I don't think Gasso did anything to really develop her.

That said, to your point, unless she gets another Bahl she's gonna go get the surest thing from the portal until the shine potentially wears off(one can hope).

Allegedly Texas has sent out portal offers to:

Sa’Mya Jones (LSU INF)
Tallen Edwards (Oklahoma State INF)
Dakota Kennedy (Arizona OF)
Maya Johnson (Belmont LHP)
Taylor Pannell (Mizzou LHP)

Texas is apparently the favorite for Jones and Edwards.  We are apparently in the top 2-3 for Kennedy, Johnson and Pannell.

Sa'Mya Jones looks like a pinch runner - not sure how a 5'3 infielder is good for us?  You bring in Edwards at 3rd, Vivi back at short, Goode slides back to her natural 2B position and bring Stewie in at 1st (?).  Prioritize Kennedy in LF for an outfield trio of Kennedy-Henry-Maloney.  Kennedy hit .444 as a lefty hitter and had 2 HR off Canady last year.

Pannell is probably the pitcher you prioritize - lefty who led the NCAA in saves this year.
