the NCAA is toothless so we just need to play the game as if there are no rules.  which there aren't.  we'd be stupid not to.

the only possible downside to breaking any rules is not being permitted to play in the tournament.  If they did that to Tech, after spending all the money, schools might think twice.  barring that, who cares about a "reduction" in scholarships or anything of the sort.  essentially, scholarships don't really exist anymore.

I'm impressed with how quickly Tech has moved from the ranks of forgettable also-rans to Public Enemy #1. Not quite the same as Jimbo's 2022 auction haul, but some parallels. Back then we had Saban to serve notice, but will anyone other than Weekly do it this time? As noted, Tech's moves aren't illegal per se, just unsavory. A large-scale boycott of scheduling the tortilla tramps seems in order.

So they’ll just play midwestern st, acu, tarleton, and similar and put up ridiculously gaudy numbers the first month.  How does that hurt them?

Not saying it would. For all I know, they aren't looking to play anyone decent before the B12 starts anyway. But maybe it would send some useful message within the greater softball community. Whether or not the donors or administration care is another matter.

I’d argue facing top teams early helps teams that are championship caliber. You don’t think we drew on our 2-1 (9) win over Tech and Canady to help grind out game 1?

Article about Teagan:

Kavan said she’ll spend the summer doing all kinds of work for the agency. She’ll also be attending a USA Camp at the end of June and will play in an international tournament in Canada. But the highlight of the year likely already came, with Kavan and her Texas teammates hoisting the championship trophy.

“A lot of celebrations with our fans and with my family of course,” she said. “But it's been wild.”

Is there anything other schools can do about Tech contacting players in the middle of the season?

5 of the best NCAA softball players just transferred to this Women’s College World Series team

Texas Tech is reloading.

Just a week after losing to Texas in a three-game series in the championship stage of the Women’s College World Series, the Red Raiders are doing all they can to assemble a squad more than capable of getting back to Oklahoma City next year.

In addition to reportedly re-signing ace pitcher NiJaree Canady to another NIL deal worthnorth of $1 million, the Red Raiders have now added five of the best players in college softball via the transfer portal. According to the site On3, Texas Tech has landed four of the top 10 players available in the portal, and a fifth that ranks inside the top 30. Three of the players joining Texas Tech were stars on other teams that competed in this year’s World Series.

Leading the pack of new players coming to Lubbock is Kaitlyn Terry, the sophomore who was not only UCLA’s best pitcher this season, but also a solid two-way player who tallied 35 hits and 30 runs scored. Terry, a lefthander, was 11th nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio with a 5.06 mark. From the circle, Terry went 20-5 with a 2.64 ERA and 172 strikeouts.

On3 ranked Terry as the third-best player in the softball portal. The fourth-best player is joining Texas Tech too, as Tennessee third baseman Taylor Pannell is also taking her talents to Lubbock. The All-American redshirt sophomore was the top hitter for the Lady Vols this season, posting a 1.240 OPS, a .398 batting average, 74 hits, 34 walks, 16 homers and 65 RBI.

Pannell will be a big boost to the Red Raiders’ batting order, as will On3’s sixth-best transfer, Ohio State catcher Jasmyn Burns, who ranked fourth nationally in home runs this season with 25 dingers, which set a single-season program record for the Buckeyes. The All-American sophomore was eighth nationally in batting average with a .455 mark, 14th in RBI (72), fifth in slugging percentage (1.006), fifth in total bases (166), and seventh in OPS (1.546).

Texas Tech aims to go back to the Women’s College World Series. The Red Raiders have added UCLA’s top pitcher, Tennessee’s best hitter and a few more of the most talented players in NCAA softball.

Apparently our weekend visitors were Spearman (NMSU) and Kaiah Altmeyer from Arizona

Career (137 GP/113 GS, .356 AVG/.454 OBP/.548 SLG/1.002 OPS, 26 2B, 3 3B, 10 HR, 91 RBI, 15-19 SB, .948 fld%)

Has started 173 games for Arizona; 74 in right field, 18 in left field, 13 in centerfield, and eight as the designated player

Became Arizona’s starting right fielder halfway through her sophomore season

Had a breakout sophomore year, hitting .333 with seven doubles, one triple, and five home runs

Hit 19 doubles in 2025 which ranked fifth in program history for doubles in a single season

5’9 so shouldn’t be the answer at 1b- I guess if she were in the field it would have to be in left with stewie in the infield at 1st or 3rd (hopefully 1st).

but would still be an upgrade at DP.  Hopefully wells can be that upgrade though so one less transfer needed.

My dream would be:

Atwood at C

Stewie at 1B

Goode at 2B

Vivi at SS

Tallen Edwards at 3B

OF of Altmeyer/Henry/Maloney

Spearman at DH

I hesitate to post this because the thread is returning to Texas Softball but this is an article in today's AAS about the Tech drama.    I thought it important to note Atwood stated she was not contacted.

Also, note that players contact their travel ball coaches for advice.   I hope Citaly does this during the off season to return to her winning form.

Excerpts:

Quote

"I was never contacted by Nathan Nelson regarding anything related to playing softball at Texas Tech... I won't be responding to any further comments about a false article," Atwood said via text.

But Nelson said most of the time he and his alumnae — including Atwood, who played four seasons for Nelson — would speak, they were discussing technique or tips, not transfers.

"How does my swing look? A certain pitch is being thrown at me, (how do I adjust)?" Nelson told the American-Statesman.

"All I can speak for are my alumni," Nelson said. "There were kids that were already in the portal... so I was involved in those conversations. I did contact them and told the third-party management (trying to recruit them) that I did not want to give out their numbers, that I would handle it myself. I called them (former players) and they have the right to say yes or no. Two of them said 'no thank you, not interested,'" Nelson  said.

Tech’s 3B is in the portal and allegedly interested in us

Lindemuth was the Red Raiders’ primary starting at third base as a freshman during their national runner-up season. She hit .305 with eight doubles, five home runs and 32 RBIs in 68 games. Lindemuth also pitched and became a very reliable defender by the end of the season.

I remember her from the WCWS.  Good defender.  Short blonde girl.  We need a 3B, so this sounds ideal.  I guess Tech signing Pannell pushed her out.

I doubt we find a transfer or freshman who will or can replicate with Mia did. Same with Joley.

The biggest plus for our lineup will be Vivi coming in to replace Bennett as a power hitting lefty.  Then you go from there to fill that spot, either via transfer or freshman.  And pretty much anyone will be a better DP than what we threw out there last year.

Maloney, Henry, Vivi, Atwood, Stewie, Goode and then you start plugging in new faces for the final 3 spots - perhaps Spearman as DP, Altmeyer in the OF and Lindemuth at 3B. Or freshmen, such as Wells or Crabtree at DP, one of the stud infielders at 3B (Nichols/Lawson) and Sneed in the OF.

Oh for sure but I just posted for the historical reference for Mia as a young player. Mia was a better hitter as a youngin but the Tech girl seems to be a better fielder for a youngin....

A better fielder + the tutelage of Singleton.

I do like your thoughts on Stewie to 1st because she's pretty athletic and that would give us some nice athleticism on the edges.

If we got someone like Altmeyer, you may as well move Stewie into the infield to improve her defense. And Sneed ain’t no slouch

Assuming Stewie can field 1B well enough, the main downside to putting her there (or at DP, obviously) is not getting full use out of her cannon arm. But she's Joley's height, and that's tall enough to present a decent target on throws. I still think in a perfect world you'd tinker with Atwood there, mainly due to her wingspan, but I don't see White breaking up his ace battery too often next season.

These of course are First World problems.

Wonder where Crabtree will play? Seems like she will be a day 1 starter somewhere.

I think she'll challenge for 1B with Matia Lawson.   Just leave Stewie in LF for a cannon.   As long as we portal a pitcher, i'm happy with where the offense will be.

Most figured Sophia would have transferred out last year but she stayed. Perhaps the same will hold true for Citlaly

Texas has not lost a lot of players with a lot of PT under Mike, and certainly not to big time programs.  Something like 15 or 16 transfers since 2019

Elish and Day are about to the only 2 who left and did something.  Everyone else basically went to a G5, lower P4 or disappeared and were never heard from again.

In Oklahoma City, Adrián González, Nick Swisher and Jocelyn Alo are three of the key players scheduled to participate. Other players scheduled to participate in Oklahoma City include Tiare Jennings, Kinzie Hansen, Amanda Lorenz, Kasidi Pickering, Ella Parker and Reese Atwood.

The best possible outcome is that we have recruited enough good players that Stevie can be the DP. Give her an occasional start at 1B, but let her main focus be on breaking 2nd story windows beyond LF
