Went to try to get a shot of the bald eagle today.  She was in the nest, but no male in sight.  Just too far away to get a good shot.  I was in Galveston for business the other day and went to the abandoned passenger train cars to see what it was like at night.  I had gotten day shots about 5 years ago.  Again, I am digging this new camera.  So here are some randoms...

Won this bad boy on a Goodwill auction. Lenses are clean, flash works, shutter fires and meter seems to work. I remember these from when I was a kid. I wanted one but they were reasonably pricy back then. Fortunately Lomography started making 110 film a few years ago so I ordered some. Wanted their black and white but at most places it’s on back order. $17.90 I think for 3 cartridges of 24 exposure film. Just gotta figure out where I want to get it developed. Anyone got recommendations for cheap film processing? I think places like CVS still do 110 they just send it out. More generally, where are you getting you cheapest 35 mm film development?e39c47c49d999a80c75a591a47ce7ae4.jpg

Nice! There is a local lab in FW I had been using but I’m done with them. They charge MORE for non mail order customers. So I’m being punished for being local.

Still waiting on my recent drop off. I’ll use either

Or

I was honesty not thrilled with most of these. I did do some slight reprocessing even though they’re scanned jpgs. I quickly found the contrast limitations of Velvia, which is fine, since I was mostly was experimenting. It’s probably the old entry level lenses, but the resolving power wasn’t as good as I’d have hoped when scanned. The scans could also be poor quality, though. They did seem to add noise. I did most of it handheld as well, which certainly doesn’t help my focusing. I had some light leakage issues in some of them which I cropped around if needed.

When I get the slides back I may try to set up a station to use my 5DIV to “scan” them. I dunno. We’ll see.

Canon AE-1 Program.
Fujichrome Velvia 100 shot at 125.

I’d be happ with those. Nice pics. The wide, landscape shots, what lens you use?

Only wide angle use in the ones shown was on the digital, which is the Canon 16-35 F4 IS. The second digital photo is a vertical pano and I think I had the 24-105 II on for that.

I did bring my 28mm FDn for for the AE-1, but I guess didn’t use it in any of the ones that turned out. I did an overnight in the rim and only brought the 50mm up there.

So, I finally got a few shots of a bald eagle today that are at least halfway decent.  Still tough to do with a 400mm lens and I am not happy with the edits.  But now I have a feel for how they move around this nest we staked out for about 5 hours today.  The baby eagles should hatch here and at the one near my brother's house in the next few weeks which mean a lot more opportunity to get photos (hoping for some fishing action shots).  Threw in a couple of other shots as well.

Great eagle pic Patricio.

Thanks.

So, I took my Pops out to the Katy Prairie because there are supposed to be a lot of birds out there.  We drove around for a couple of hours, and there were a lot of hawks and rather common birds, but opportunities for good shots were few and far between.  I get home and take my daughters on a walk around the neighborhood pond and park and see this guy:

Really what is on my list are owls.  Hoping for Barn, Great Horn and Screech owls.  I have run across Barn and Screech owls, but either didn't have the right lens for the job at the time, or missed the shot when I did have the gear.

For those of y'all that like my graffiti shots:

Same kind of deal. This one was near the house today, Cooper's hawk I've been seeing around, actually waited for me to get my camera and grab a shot. I just wish it weren't a sawed off tree I trimmed this summer.

Man, I really want to come across a Cooper's Hawk.  Those eyes are amazing.

So I found this tiny urban park that has a ton of birds, including Great Horned Owls.  I have yet to see the owls, but have heard them.  I did get a couple other shots, one of a Pileated Woodpecker.  Not a great shot, but I found the nest so hopefully I can get some better ones borrowing one of my Pops' lenses.  Also ran into some travelers today so I got to do some portrait/street type stuff.  Sorry for the overload of shots.  Just had a good couple of days.

Solid work. You’ve developed a keen eye for composition.

Man, awesome stuff as always Patricio.  You obviously ask these people to take their pics?  Ever get any unpleasant interactions taking photos in the rough parts of town?  Carrying a nice camera would make me nervous.  Hell, just being there would make me nervous.  Maybe I'm a pussy.

Thank you.

I wouldn’t say you are a pussy. Maybe a little too cautious or perhaps have misconceptions about parts of cities. There are places within certain neighborhoods where I don’t feel comfortable walking around with my camera. Without an insider bringing you in, you are definitely taking a risk. Other pets of the same neighborhood will feel less like that.

I have gotten yelled at by hookers before. And turned down by people when I ask if I can take their photo. But that is fairly rare. It does suck because I can be fairly shy and to work up to it then get shot down kind of sucks. Especially if it would have been a good photo.

The travelers are easy though. We have trains in common and I can speak their language in that sense. I usually offer a ride to the store and they will like in the bed of my truck or I will give them a couple of bucks. I’ll actually talk to them and ask their names, where they are from and where they are going. Sometimes I will call in the freight numbers for them to see if the train they want to hop is the right one. After that, asking for a few photos is no big deal. I try to get an email that I can send the photos to for them to keep.

Swayze you ever go anywhere around Brenham? Supposed to be nice around there. I have it in mind to go hit up Truth BBQ then find a nice park or two to find some birds and stuff one of these days.

I haven’t really gone there to shoot. A little bit in the area but not so much for birds. I have eaten at truth a few times and it is amazing bbq.

Spent a few days in DC and finally got to shoot the Lincoln Memorial at night.   Have wanted to do that since I got my first camera when I was a kid.   I'm loathe to call something a bucket list item but this one was pretty high on my personal wants.

Also went to Mt. Vernon for the first time.   Well worth it but if you have never been, go right when it opens but it was fairly crowded by the time we left.   And speaking of crowded, the Lincoln Memorial was packed during the day on Saturday.   Like wall to wall people in the main gallery and the steps were just filled with selfie takers.   Now, night time?   At one point there were only 4 of us in the main gallery right near Lincoln.   I really regret not bringing my tripod because the shots down the Reflecting Pool back toward the Washington Monument were spectacular but I really needed long exposures and holding the camera just wasn't cutting it.

Oh.....   And Swayze....   Have you ever ventured out NE of Houston past Lufkin and up to Carthage/Jefferson/Marshall?    There's a lot of older buildings and houses that are most likely abandoned.

Nice shots Mac. It pains me to say that the time I lived in DC I did very little photography. I wish I would have done more.

Yeah, I have been up that way. I need to go more, but the problem is distance I can go, explore/photograph, and get back in a day. You are right, there is quite a bit of stuff up there.

Looking to post a few photos, I know at one time I could post photos that were in my Dropbox account, but I am not sure that works anymore? If not what is best place to host?

I honestly don’t know about Dropbox I still use and prefer Flickr (however their mobile app does not provide img codes, only their browser website does). Most every free hosting place is going to compress your images. But if you want to go that route, imgbox.com will so the job.

Just getting into birds and wildlife..Was an avid hunter growing up but for some reason I am just not real mad at them anymore, so seems the only real shooting I have been doing is with a camera. Didn’t think I would love birding as much as I have but for some reason I really dig it.

SThen today I went to check out this Bald Eagle that lives near my older brother's house.  The nest is about 250 yards into private property.  So even with the 400mm lens, it wasn't going to be possible to get a good shot.  This is my first time seeing a Bald Eagle in the wild.  Need to go back when I have more time and wait by the water for when it is fishing for dinner.

What part of town is this nest?  We see a pair of bald eagles regularly on Buffalo Bayou at Gessner and have been wondering if they have a nest close by.  They showed up right after Harvey and have been in the area since.

Cypress.  Huffmeister and Kluge basically.  Look for a nest the size of a VW Bug.  Seriously, they are huge.

Man, those waxwings are cool.  I missed out on them or something similar on an afternoon walk with my little girls.  I keep telling myself to never leave the camera at home, and of course the time I do, I miss the opportunity of getting a great shot.  Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

I did get to visit an abandoned juvenile detention center.  That was pretty cool and creepy.  Here are some shots and a few others.  Sorry for the flood of images...
