The way defenses are played now is a lot different than back then. They’re designed to prevent that where as if Emmitt broke through the front 7 there wasn’t much behind.

Emmitt was elite at sliding in the hole while still moving forward. He never really had to change direction in that running scheme. Outside zone requires you to start sideways, and then stick your foot in the ground and head downhill. Lots more time for defenses to flow to you with extra defenders.

Getting Coleman would be amazing and some Midwest school linemen. Would love to poach a Wisconsin lineman, always seem to maul. I don’t see XF being a great safety so let’s go get one. I’m confused how he was a 5 star but he’s not playing like it. Unless Jonah is going to be a monster

This.  Baker is looking better, and will end up being a good one.  Beyond that, for OP to pretty much dismiss Nick Brooks' future because he struggled in the SEC as a true freshman is laughable.

No one is dismissing Brooks' future. He has been objectively as bad as any Texas OL player has looked in a decade in his limited time, mostly out of position, which doesn't mean he won't turn into an absolute stud but does mean counting on him for next year would just be silly. I didn't say we need to process out these guys and start over at RT but adding in an experienced starter to at least compete makes sense unless you really enjoy losing to shit teams. Baker has shown improvement but he still isn't good in both phases and is likely to go back to looking like he is playing on rollerskates when we face Georgia and Texas A&M.

It would be lovely if he could show that it hasn't just been a drop in competition level but I'm skeptical. Raising the floor of that tackle group with a more proven player who can come in and compete is an obvious move, as of now, if you don't want to see another season torpedoed by a singular position group. Hopefully Baker continues to look better and we won't have to. I've only ever heard great things about the kid personally so him thriving at Texas would be great. No one is rooting against that. Continuing to just hope that the kids recruited and developed by Flood will turn into productive above average starters though is an exercise in both futility and pure stupidity given the track record of the last five years.

Cedric Griffin and Earl Thomas both looked lost early in their careers.  Made huge jumps a season later.  Hell, Taaffe looked like trash when he got his first chance.

That's right. Everyone knows the first place you should look for transfer OL is one of the worst offenses in all of CFB.

I was about to say, nothing about the current Wisco offense suggests "imposing their will" or "establishing the run"

You haven't been paying attention, but Baker is turning into a very good tackle. He has grown a ton over the last month. I think that Daniel Cruz is going to factor into the interior next season in some capacity, but I would love to see us take a couple of guards in the portal.

It was crazy to rate Texas #1 to start the season with so many new faces on the OL. I'm glad to hear they're improving which is what one would expect over the course of the season. Next year always seemed to be the year they expected us to have this year. If Arch stays the course, we'll be tough as shit by the Aggie game.

It's nice to feel like we can beat Georgia. A week ago, I felt very differently.

I'm not picking nits, but there are five linemen (counting Majors) currently on rosters from the last two draft classes.  All developed by Flood.  It's an entirely new unit this year - most folks expected struggles, or should have.  A plug and play guy from the portal would be fantastic, and I'd imagine the staff is angling for one.  That said, I think the gnashing of teeth may be a bit overblown.  OL more than any other group is improved appreciably by continuity and the guys knowing each other.  They'll be better next year.

I don't entirely disagree with this but I would point out two things.

There is an ocean of difference between reasonable expected regression after losing four starters vs what we have had. We have been the worst OL in the conference and arguably one of the worst in the entirety of the power conferences. There is no context in which that is even remotely acceptable for a program like Texas. That isn't arrogance or delusion. Just the simple reality given our resources. Also you mention the importance of continuity with the OL and you are absolutely right.. but we are losing Hutson and Campbell. No matter how things shake out in the portal we are going to have two new tackle-guard tandems and highly likely a different starting center as well (whether that comes from the portal or Cruz being ready). If continuity was a core cause of the problems this year then it will be so again in 2026.

You’re thinking about this all wrong. We just need to get Helo to identify the worst offensive line in America and recruit three of those guys. Boom - cheap All Americans.

"Coach Sarkisian, we have an idea. Now, you're going to think this sounds insane, but you're just gonna have to trust us...."

I hope Jelani comes back and Williams returns to his pre-injury form. I think that is a solid starting duo. The jury is out on Filsaime for me. Right now he is just another guy out there. There is some youth in Hicks and Jonah that could maybe step up as well. But I do think we should fine another veteran safety.

I believe we are replacing both CBs next year. I’m concerned no one has been able to take the job from Gilbeau and there is a notable drop off when Manny doesn’t play. If Littleton is moved to corner I’m guessing Mack takes over at nickel. So Black, Roberson, Phillips and whoever else fights for the other spot. I think another corner is needed as well.

Just realized I haven’t mentioned JJR or Wilson and I’m not sure where either fits in the puzzle. Also I expect some attrition.

Also the team as a whole could use some speed added on both sides of the ball.

Filsaime hasn't played real competition until Vandy. He is a RS-FR, so it's to be expected that he struggled, but he also made some nice plays. No jury should be out on anyone who is a FR to SOPH right now. Give these dudes time to develop and tine against teams with a pulse and the game will slow down for them. Filsaime will be a good SS for us next year.

I posted this in the old thread about running back.

You can steal a good starting rb from a shitty team or even a good one.  Ohio St and Ole Miss have both done it.  Michigan poached Justice Haynes from Alabama after Saban retired.  There will be options and I think spending a lot for a good one would be a smart move this particular portal period.  This team needs an elite back to take it to another level.  I like Wisner a lot because he runs hard and is shifty as fuck, but he just doesn't have the top end speed to be a great back.

Agree with this 100%. We need a difference maker at RB, and Sark needs to open his fucking eyes and see that. Derek Cooper, as good as he is, is not Adrian Peterson or Leonard Fournette. We need a dude that can make the DL second guess if they want to try and tackle him, or get bodied in the pass game.

Saek, of course, because it's Sark, missed out on Justice Haynes when all I did was pine over that we needed that dude in the worst way.

Here's his stats - 121/857/10 7.1 ypc. Yeah, I think we would have used him since all we had was Wisner and freshmen either coming off an axhilles tear, true frosh, or Baxter, who has finakly returned after missing 6 games, but he isn't the same. He lost his speed, but he's still a great pass blocker and pass catcher. Haynes would be RB1 for us right now, and will be a 1st rd pick next year. He has everything you want in a RB. He can do it all, and he's a muscular mf'er at 5'10 215 lbs. He's fast af, too.

Fuck Sark and Chad Scort/Tashard Choice for not even kicking the tires, and fuck Michigan just because.

While the focus for many fans rightly remains on the rest of the Longhorns’ regular season, behind the scenes is a different story for much of the Texas staff.

Steve Sarkisian and his personnel team are prepping diligently for next spring and the 2026 season from a roster construction standpoint.

Gerry Hamilton wrote this morning about a number of potential high school prospects (and possibly a junior college player or two, as well). While adding new talent to the mix is always important, it is far from the only moving roster piece currently receiving major attention of the Longhorns’ coaches.

There is the 1) retention and 2) attrition of current players on the roster to be concerned with. And then there are 3) potential additions via the transfer portal.

Texas is working on all three aspects, plus 4) high school recruiting.

We hear a lot about high school recruiting, but not much about the current roster. That is by design during the football season. No one wants to take away the focus on the season itself.

So Brandon Harris and the personnel staff are like ducks swimming in a pond right now. Things may appear calm, cool and collected above water, but beneath the surface, they’re paddling as fast and efficiently as they can.

To this point, outside of a couple of players, like Jerrick Gibson and Will Stone, no other current Longhorn has announced a decision to enter the transfer portal.

Surely there will be more attrition. But who and how much?

That’s what no one, including Texas or even the current players, knows for sure.

Perhaps the biggest factor lording over the situation is the new revenue sharing limits. For many teams across the NCAA, that will mean more money to distribute to rosters. For some, like Texas, it might mean less than previous years.

And that will be the most interesting aspect of the off-season. How do the new revenue sharing rules and limits effect roster construction?

Will it hurt a team’s depth? After all, a second teamer at Georgia could be a starter at Maryland.

Will it change the personnel focus from high school recruiting to player retention? How do you best combine all of those four aspects to create not only the best team for 2026 but the best program for the long haul?

We don’t have the all the answers quite yet. No one does IMO.

So I get the distinct feeling that this may be the most interesting off-season in college football ever. Prepare yourself for it now, just like the Texas personnel staff is already behind the scenes.

I think it’s going to be wild.

With respect to Bobby—and I do respect him a great deal, and appreciate his contributions to Texas football—I think he has predicted that every offseason is going to be the wildest one for the last five years.

Maybe it will be.

But probably Texas will retain its core of most important players, lose some second tier talent, and sign half a dozen key contributors for the next season.

Would Lane retain the key people on our defensive staff? Who would Sark take to the NFL? Hopefully a moot question.
