Any suggestions of good beaches within an hour of Wellington, FL?  I've been as far as Lauderdale by the Sea and Boca.  What else is around there.  Something chill and not too expensive.

Jupiter

  • Dubois Park
  • If the tide is ripping out with an onshore wind watch boats at the Inlet
  • Climb the lighthouse
  • Grab a beer at the Square grouper (view of lighthouse)
  • Lunch @ Food Shack or low key Dune Dog
  • Blowing Rocks on the island

Bathtub beach (Hutchinson Island) or any of the beach access spots north of there on A1A (Bob Graham)

  • Cool natural beach
  • Bring food and beverages...  not much out there

haulover beach for the scenery

I was just down in Coconut Grove for a week.

I'll take San Diego women over Miami women 100 times out of 100.   I'm not a prude; I can handle fake tits.  But fake asses, lips, cheeks, yada yada no fucking way. Miami has the world's fakest women.

Don't know about the hour, but the GF and I have spent quite a bit of time in Delray.  It's nice.

Family told me lots of shops and stuff there

Yes.  Atlantic Ave has tons of restaurants, bars, and shops from the beach to the intercoastal.

pretty close to the beach on Atlantic, there's a pizza-by-the-slice place that's really solid.

Going to check out Jupiter today.  Delray most likely tomorrow.

Miami Beach was great yesterday - everyone should do the beach in front of Lummus at least once.  Honestly, if you can avoid the more heavy party part of South Beach (around Mango's, etc), I like it.  I'm talking further up by 12th/13th and up.  Beach is pretty chill, less of a circus.

Oh... man... prices in FL in general are higher than anticipated although its not like I'm staying in a broke-ass area.  But even up in the Daytona/Ponce Inlet area.  I feel like I can find cheap food in Austin.  Was laughing at walking past a pretty basic looking restaurant on Washington Avenue yesterday and, as we walked towards Lincoln, I glanced at their menu board.  Barbacoa taco plate for $28 !?

Dubois Park and Jupiter was an excellent suggestion. We started the morning in the lagoon and then made our way across the parking lot to the beach to play around in the waves.  Ended up eating at Guanabanas was that amazing view and vibe. Afterwards we drove for maybe 15-20 minutes and Jupiter looks like a great area in general.

If you make it to the Gulf side of Florida, the beaches and water are much nicer. Sarasota has a few great options in Siesta Key and Lido Key. Both places offer white sand, clear emerald water and lots of shopping/dining options. Ana Maria Island is also very nice in the Bradenton area. Clearwater beach is nice but generally overly crowded and flooded with tourist.

I'm flying into Orlando in a few weeks with my kids for vacation. We're staying in Cocoa Beach for a few days, and we're planning to do a Kennedy Space Center tour. I've also got a bioluminescence tour scheduled. After Cocoa Beach, we're heading down to Miami. I'm thinking of doing a Biscayne NP boat tour that includes some snorkeling. I want to do a day trip down to Key West mostly just for a photo-op at the southernmost point marker. Reading the Jupiter/Delray suggestions, do y'all have any other kid friendly (13 and 9) suggestions in the area?

uuuuuhhh That's a long drive just to see a frankly disappointing ship buoy.  It's gonna be 3hrs down from Miami and 3 back *IF* you're lucky.

If you want to snorkel with the kiddos John Pennekamp is right there in Key Largo. ~45mins from Miami.  (or Looe Key if you're going down to KW)

If you go down, stop at:

  • Robert is Here fruit stand in (near) Homestead (fruit milkshakes)
  • Robbie's so the kids can see/feed the Tarpon mm 77.5 gulfside
  • On Big Pine drive to No Name Pub.  (easy to find- thanks internet)  Touristy but out of the way and you WILL see Key Deer.  If you eat there have a Royal

Everything in the keys is touristy and expensive.  The best way to experience the Keys is out on a boat.  If you're not going out on a boat, I'd say skip it.

Thank you for the suggestions on the way down! I get that its just a touristy gimmick, but it's an opportunity to create a memory with my kids. I'm not dead set on making that trip just yet, but I'm considering it.

Pennekamp is great.  Bahia Honda is a great spot much further down the road, though.  You can snorkel off the beach there and see some good stuff.

They'll remember the first time they see a shark / flying fish / barracuda.  Also just be aware, the Keys don't really have beaches, not that you can access without a boat or that don't stink to high heaven.  (Smathers in KW *might* be the only exception.)

Good to know. Its sounding more and more like I may just need to scrap the KW idea.

What are y'alls favorite beaches anywhere in southern (Atlantic) Florida? Any thoughts on whether a trip to Marco Island would be worth the drive from Miami? I found a boat to charter that does trips through the ten thousand islands and stops to explore them, and you can do shelling also.

Is that the place with the dollar bills everywhere?  Yeah, there were key deer on the fucking patio there.  Cool spot.  And the barkeep said that they estimate that there is over 250,000 dollar bills there.

I'd like to add that the keys get old fast.

We did...hell, I don't know...I think 9 days on Marathon, house/dog sitting for a very wealthy friend.  Here are the things to do there, in no particular order.  Eat, drink, fuck, ride the jet skis, fuck some more, drink some more, eat some more.  And the restaurants and bars really aren't that interesting.  And here's a hot take: the fucking east coast SUCKS for a sports fan.  If I go to happy hour here, there's a game on the TV.  Baseball, NBA, NHL whatever.  There isn't DICK on in FL at 4 PM.  You're just staring at the alkie across the bar while he's doing the same.

You're on some patio, sweating your ass off, listening to some asshole sing Jimmy Buffet covers, and ordering the next round before you're done with this one because there's nothing else to do.   "But Gil, did you go to the turtle hospital?"   Yeah.  That was cool for about 2 hours.  Check that off the list.  Went out on a half-day boat too.  It was shitty fishing.

GF breaks her phone?  Cool, we get to drive to Key West, because that's the nearest T Mobile store.   Key West was fun when we did 3 days there a few years back.  But again, you run out of shit to do. I can (and do), get shitfaced at home, I don't need to fly across the continent to do that.

Yeah,

The reason I don't have a place in the keys is that I want more out of life than fishing and drinking.  In the keys that's all there is... world class fishing and drinking.  Well world class drinking anyways.

We used to rent a place down there in the summer, but it's a small redneck town in a beautiful setting, and that's it.

PS They had more than 500k on the walls at one point.  They were staring down a hurricane and decided to thin things out a bit.  I love a royal pizza but it's almost $40.

I'd rather go to Mangrove Mamas

my aforementioned wealthy friend just added a home in Key West to his portfolio.  He paid 2 million dollars.  There is no dedicated parking for the home.  Fend for yourself.

This is a much better idea than driving to Key West for the day. Taking a boat out of Goodland to fish, shell, sightsee the 10000 islands will be more memorable than the clusterfuck the drive to KW is. For me, there isn’t any place better than Sanibel down through the 10000 islands. You can still get out and find a place to set up with no one else on it. Saying that, SWFL beaches aren’t like typical gulf beaches so if you are looking for clear blue/green water and white sand don’t bother, go further north past Venice /Sarasota to AMI or that area or stay on the East coast. It will also be a little warm that time of year, so be prepared. We get out early, avoid the mid day sun, and go back out early evening. If you need recs on the area, I can send a few.

I’m not a huge fan of the Keys, but the whole point of the Keys is to get out on the water and do very little else. I’ve always had a great time in the middle keys, but it’s get up, get on the boat, get off the boat, go to bed, do it again.

Thank you! I would definitely appreciate some recs if you don't mind. I booked an Atlantic coast trip because I wanted it to be a more adventurous type of vacation instead of just beaches every day. I haven't been planning on doing much beach stuff other than a couple of days. Boating to and swimming off an island sounds pretty fun.

No one besides half a billion mosquitos and no see ums.  Beach camping on the outside of Choko was fun until the full moon rose over the bay.  Incredible sight but the leeward side of our cooler was black with no see ums.

I would NOT go swimming in the 10k Islands/Chokoloskee/Flamingo areas, not that you'd want to.

East coast beach recs

North to South

  • Jupiter/Hutchinson Island: (above)  If you want to be away from crowds, Hutchinson is the place imo  YMMV
  • Red Reef Park in Boca Raton:  You'll pay to get in and park, nice beach nice facilities, the price keeps the crowds down some.
  • Deerfield Beach: pay lot by the SE 9th St.  By the Embassy Suites  (there is some diving off the beach just patch reef but you will see some fish)  It's just far enough north that you might get a little swell rolling into the beach.
  • Lauderdale By the Sea: Just south of the pier there is good snorkeling and a decent little patch reef.  LBS is a little tourist town that gets it mostly right and there is food and entertainment and it's not over developed (huge beach hotels)
  • Haulover Beach:  Miami feel and a nice wide beach in Dade that isn't on S Beach.  There is a nudie beach on the north end if that's your thing
  • Rent a boat and go to Boca Chita / Elliot Key / snorkle Fowey Rocks then finish up at the Haulover Sandbar (that's a full day start early)

We’ve never had an issue with no see ums outside of fishing the really low tide mangrove areas at dusk.

Disagree on the swimming side also, there are plenty of places to pull in and get in the water. Would I go in the inner islands, no. If you are on the outer islands like Kice or Cape Romano, or the outside islands further south, no problem. If you want more water clarity (Kice is generally pretty clear at the cuts) then you can skip around to the other side of Marco and run to Keywadin or run really far north to Lover’s Key/SanCap. I don’t want to sit on a beach cheek to cheek with people, I’ll take west coast over east coast 7 days out of 7.

Once you pass Cayo Costa the beaches/water turn more towards what people expect with the gulf. You can still find some seclusion through Longboat Key and the north end of AMI during the week, but everything is pretty well packed from Marco to Anclote unless you go to boat access only places like a few places in the 10000 islands (most on Marco go north to Keywadin), North Cap / Cayo Costa, or the area of Sanibel between the end of West Gulf Dr and Bowman’s where there is no public access.

Everyone has their preferences, I just hope it is clear water and white sand and they stay away from where I hang out.

I don't really consider Kice/Romano to be part of the area I was describing.  Yeah I guess it's in 10K islands.  I've camped on that shoal out there, it's a shell covered wild beach, so that's kinda cool.  More outdoorsy than beachy though IMO.  I've been from Tiger Island down through Whitewater Bay,  I've run Tin Can Alley and the outside to/from Islamorada many times.    I wouldn't swim in there for two reasons:

  1. Sharks
  2. Fucking Sharks!

As for the west coach beaches  I'm not a hater, but the OP asked for recs within an hour of Wellington.  The other poster asked for east coast recommendations.   So Cayo Costa didn't make the list.

As for crowding, Hutchinson Island beach access points will be less crowded at noon than pretty much any west coast beach.  Once the flotillas arrive, it's just as crowded if not more so.  As for cheek to cheek,  east coast cheek >> old mid west, west coast cheek.

That said a favorite vacation I recommend to friends is to rent a place for a week on Cayo Costa (IDK how they fared after the storm)  But cool little place to fly or boat in.  Sand streets and golf carts, cool rental houses, and chill vibes.  Bring bug spray, sunscreen, and beer.  Probably in that order.

If you drive down at least as far as Marathon, stop at Keys Fisheries for a lobster reuben (it's expensive, but easily large enough for two) even if you're not a fan of normal reubens. The sauerkraut is very mild and doesn't overwhelm the lobster. Also eat your weight in stone crab claws right off the boat (all the claws in Miami come through here first). There's a cozy little tree house-like "crows nest" bar that's a nice place to watch the sunset.

If you aren't going down to the Keys but are looking for oddball attractions in south Dade County, airboat rides through the Everglades and an afternoon at the alligator farm is entertaining enough.

https://everglades.com/

And I would be remiss if I didn't give a plug to Monkey Jungle - "where the monkeys are free and the people are caged!" Won't keep your interest all day, but it's a fun hour or two.

Good advice for Keys thread.  Although I just get a bag of claws from the shop up front (have them cracked there) some mustard, and some fish dip.  Grab some cold beers on the way to your rental and the evening is set.  Maybe pick up some Dion's chicken to eat cold on the boat tomorrow for lunch.

So, we visited family in two different parts of Florida.  My hot takes of the beaches we visited in this trip in order of "best" to "worst" (although I don't want to necessarily use the term "worst").  My opinion - I know this is very subjective.

Jupiter Beach over by DuBois Park

Miami Beach / Lummus Park

Lauderdale by the Sea

Ponce Inlet

Delray Beach

Daytona Beach proper

...bonus beach

Bay St. Louis in Mississippi.  Great little town, given its virtual rebuilding because of Katrina, everything is new and charming.  Its an odd mix of a very red town that doesn't necessarily act red.  Surprising number of bars per capita.  White sand beaches but, man, I was not going to get in that water.

Re: Wellington and that general area.  Man, it was not for me.  Everything perfect and manicured and gated and just felt too sheltered.  Is it a really nice area?  Yeah.  Tons of money there.  TONS.  But my son and I had the same visceral reaction when we arrived. It felt kind of soulless.  If I lived in the area, I would absolutely opt for Jupiter or, if I had the money, the Prospect Park area (what a great neighborhood).

Oh... what's up with Briny Breezes?  Oddly charming.  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12073385/Inside-small-Florida-mobile-home-community-Briny-Breezes.html

briny breezes is whacky as hell.  They've been offered TONS of money for that land.  A friend just completed a high rise apartment building that overlooks it, and when I got a tour I had no idea that I was looking at the famous trailer park until he told me.

Yeah... we basically drove all the way from Wellington to Mar-a-Lago and turned right.  Then drove allll the way down to Delray.  When you come up to Briny Breezes you're like, what in the world is this place?  But, in a way, after passing mega mansions and fantasyland, it felt refreshing.

I went through there last year.  The beach driving was weird to me, but cool.  Driving by the racetrack takes a long time.  It's a big mofo.
