I started to put this in the regular season thread but it's time to put last year in the rear view mirror. They lucked into #2 in the lotto and if they don't take Harper and do some stupid shit instead, I'm going to lose my shit.

Biggest needs: outside shooting and outside shooting, size and muscle on the front line, and more vets who have been there done that.

I could take or leave KD. I have faith that they won't overpay for him. If it's Vassell, Barnes and 14 plus some second rounders, fine. I'd honestly be more upset about losing Barnes than Vassell. Barnes was fantastic last year. But they can't trade Sochan in the package. Not because I think that he's ever going to become a reliable shooter or even competent, but look at the west over the next 5 years and they need someone who can match up defensively one on one against guys like SGA and Jalen Williams at OKC and Luka in LA and Ant in Minnesota. Between Sochan and Castle, they have two very, very good on ball perimeter defenders. I think Harper can be a plus defender too. Fox isn't a shut down guy, but he's capable enough that he's not going to get hunted every possession.

I'll have some more thoughts on the draft in the next few days. If they don't move 14 (and my hunch is that they will for a similar package they got for Dillingham last year), I'd like them to target Rasheer Fleming or Cedric Coward. If Queen were to fall that far down, then he'd be my favorite but I don't think he lasts that long. I haven't seen enough of Essengue, Collin Murray-Boyles, or Asa Newell to have an opinion. I see Carter Bryant mocked to them a bit, but his shooting makes me nervous. Same thing about Demin, but I like his upside a bit more than Bryant's as a creator. But I'm not sure they need more shot creation with Harper assumingly coming on board. Sorber's injury scares me.

I think this is going to be a wild ass off season. Too many owners will look around, see that the league has had 7 different champions in 7 years, see how the Pacers made the finals, and say, "why not us?" I'm expecting the Spurs to not get caught up in the frenzy and stay the course. There's going to be a lot of action and nobody outside of Brooklyn has real cap to play with.  Teams are trying to avoid the apron penalties like the plague. At the end of the summer, there are going to be some bargains and good deals to be had. There are just too many dumb owners/GMs and bad contracts out there. So I hope they're patient with whatever they do. I also hope they hire some veteran coaches to put around Mitch.

None of the draft or KD ribble-rabble even matters.

If Marvel movies have taught me anything about the mysteries of the Far East, once Wemby is back from Kamar-Taj with his new Dr. Strange powers, the league is doomed.

His body is well enough for long distance international flights. That's a good sign, clot-wise, isn't it?

Please someone assure me he will be fully healthy for his entire career.

Not sure validity but saw the Suns were asking for #2 and Castle for a package involving Durant. Uh, go fuck yourselves on that one.

Like - going forward? Because he hasn't exactly been healthy for his first 2 seasons.

I thought it was #2 or Castle. But they aren't going to get either. I'm with Mitch - I wouldn't even give up Sochan.

Sochan's main problem in these workout vids is that he doesn't look good with his shirt off.

Hey that's my high school.

Bitchass coach cut me at tryouts.

Then again I wasn't 3% of even Sochan.

And I also looked terrible with my shirt off.

Samesies. Class of '91. What about you? (Maybe we've already figured this out about each other but I'm losing brain cells by the day.)

Had a nightmare last night where I was announcing the NBA draft with Mark Jones and accidentally said Ace Bailey instead of Harper for the Spurs pick. The next 30 minutes of the dream was me running for my life and having to move my family to Antartica.

After checking out the physical stats behind the teams that made it deep this year, I'm fully on board with drafting Harper.

The lanky, long, floor dominating wing player doesn't really seem to exist often in today's league.

Such as?

Indy: Siakam

OKC:  Williams

Knicks:  OG

Minny:  McDaniels

I mean there's way more examples of wing players, what do you mean?  And I'm on board with Harper too especially since he's grown 1.5 inches and has long arms.

The game isn't based on that position anymore.  Winning 10 years ago you needed a Kawhi or Durant size wing.  They mostly  use 6 5 combo guards at 3 perimeter positions it seems.

Williams on OKC isn't the lanky long wing I was mentioning.

Durant is 6-11. Kawhi is 6-7.

Welp, looks like KD is going to Houston.  Basically, the difference was the 10 vs the 14th pick.  Got close but ultimately, we decided to keep our powder dry.  They're farther along then we are so it also aligns with timelines better for them.  Still hurts.

Gagree. I didn’t want KD on this team unless it was a steal. Seems Rockets gave up quite a bit to get him.

It's really just the 10th pick in the draft that they gave up. Jalen Green is owed $105M over the next 3 seasons. That is a bad contract that Houston did well to get out from under. Brooks is owed $40M over the next 2. He wasn't awful for them but Durant will easily outdo their combined production assuming they get 65+ games out of him and have him healthy for the playoffs.

The 2nd round picks are basically worthless.

It's a very good roll of the dice for the Rockets. Especially if they can resign Durant for something reasonable for a couple of seasons.

Not really.... 10 and Green, who's upside will have a ceiling unless he greatly improves his shooting, although only 22, so has a long development curve.

Great deal for the rockets. They didn’t have to give back any of the future suns picks. I don’t know what their cap is going to look like after they re-sign KD but getting off of Green is a win. I’ve always loathed Brooks and his contract isn’t that great either. Unless KD breaks down, that’s a no brainier of a trade.

Who can the Spurs get for those exceptions is probably the difference between playoffs and not.  Going to need some veteran help.  Still have picks and KJ, Barnes, Vassell and Sochan if the right deal comes around but I don't want to see or hear anything about Jaylon Brown.  Fuck that.

KD will give you one good year, maybe. Not a trade you make unless you want to get to the finals immediately. Of course, every team that's acquired KD since he left Golden State had the exact same motivation and every single time it failed with Brooklyn being the most agonizingly close to success.

I know Houston got the 2 seed but I never felt like they be able to hang with a Denver, OKC, or even LAL over the course of a 7 game series, and I don't think they are one of those "one piece away" teams, either.

If we can't make the playoffs as currently constructed barring major injury issues that's a huge fucking failure.

I think they would have beat LA. GS with Curry was a pretty good team and what Houston did to them over 7 games cost them the Minny series. Those guys were physically wiped after that.

It may depend on the next jump Amen makes but Durant is so much better than Green for what they need. Playing Whitmore over Brooks shouldn't be much of a drop-off, either - or maybe they get some Sheppard minutes now.

I mean Houston is fucking loaded and if KD can stay healthy this immediately solves their biggest issue.

i may be the minority here but Id hate cam whitmores game. Houston probably couldve unloaded him to PHX and been better off replacing him with a veteran. I think Brooks is infinitely more valuable than Whitmore. obv hes more experienced and if you look pass the villain BS he trys to portray...id rather have him

Well, we haven't won more than 34 games in the last 5 years.  We're basically saying Wemby has to continue to develop and play 75 games next season and then HOPE the others can continue to develop and add to their game.  Maybe the Sochan shooting tech change is for real, but I don't want that guy shooting more than 10 shots a game anyway.  Maybe Castle is developing.  I can't depend on a rookie guard, as talented as he is, doing much except playing rotation level ball for the majority of the season.  At some point, talent has to translate to production.  This has only happened with Wemby.  Vassell, Sochan, and Castle, to a smaller degree, have to get better and not baby steps anymore, that's what Vassell and Sochan have been doing.  They're marginally better than they were when they joined the league.  Let's take Vassell as an example:

Barring some crazy trade (which could definitely happen) this is probably the “be happy to be a playoff team” season. Get Wemby through injury free, figure out who is going to stay, trade those who are extension eligible but aren’t holding up their end, solidify the coaching and support staff. It’s nut-cutting time for Vassell, Sochan, Johnson, and the rest of that bench squad. I can confidently count three players who will be on this team after the next season; Wembanyama, Castle, and Harper. That’s it.

Did De'Aron Fox die?

We would have won more than 34 games last season if Wemby didn't get shut down. And then we shut Fox down.

Castle will be better and may even take a leap. Sochan will be better. You would think Wemby will continue to get better. I don't know what we get from Harper but he will be on the team. We shouldn't really need anything from DV and Keldon that they didn't give us last season. If our season is going to hinge on either of those guy's "development" then just shoot me in the head now.

It's time to win games and make the playoffs. I get the West is deep but if we can't be better than all of these teams with 65+ games of Fox and Wemby then, yes, this season will be a failure.

Screenshot_20250622_135918_Chrome.thumb.jpg.b017f19759be4f8faf128aba3f574517.jpg

And that's assuming the other 7 teams all make the playoffs and I wouldn't exactly throw a ton of money on teams like the Clippers and Warriors to stay out of the play-in.

I think Brooks is infinitely more valuable than Whitmore. obv hes more experienced and if you look pass the villain BS he trys to portray...id rather have him

I don’t think Cam has played enough to figure out what they have yet.the assumption is he’ll get a ton of minutes with Green gone. I dunno. He doesn’t defend well and he’s butted heads with Ime for a couple of years now. Obviously they either have to play him a lot more or trade him.

I admittedly have watched very little pro basketball the last few years so yall know way more than I do.

He just doesn’t pass and get assists…and it’s almost a shot per minute.

And that's assuming the other 7 teams all make the playoffs and I wouldn't exactly throw a ton of money on teams like the Clippers and Warriors to stay out of the play-in.

So, with health, I think we make the playoffs as well, but it's greatly up to Wemby at this point.  Fox is solid player but what Fox are you getting?  He's a high USG%, shoot first PG, who's a defensive liability because of his size.  He's a pretty good player, but not a great player, and what the team really needs is a facilitator - CP3 from 6 years ago.  Scoring 25 on 18-19-20 shots isn't really a great stat for a small PG, who's a lousy 3 point shooter.  Now, I do think he has in him being more of an on court leader.  A guy who scores 18-19 points on 14-15 shots and decreases his USG% under 25 and increases his AST% above 30 while hopefully shooting 34-35% from 3.  You get that guy, we're probably easily making the playoffs but he's never done it before because Sac-town needed his scoring.  We don't need that if the others show up and with the rookie who's calling card is scoring at this point.  We need Fox to be a better facilitator and decent shooter who can break down a defense and dictate pace.  I do respect him because he's a guy who wanted to come here.

As far as the others, Castle is who I have my eye on.  A lot of good stuff by the eye test, but he's got to become a better shooter and more efficient offensive player, but as a rookie, nothing but love for his first year.  I hope he can make a huge step forward and it begins with shooting.  Hopefully the others can take a step forward, but again, my point is, they've really only take baby steps forward.  So we do really need to make an impact with some smart moves in FA.  Getting to the 8 seed is 14 games.  That's a bunch. I don't give a fuck about the play-in games.  That's not about being a good team, it's about TV ratings.

These guys are so young, it's hard to really critique guys learning the pro game, but it's how we've built this team.  We need them to take all of these minutes and experience they've gotten and turn it into more sustainable production.  And again, we're not asking for them to be ship contenders, just make the playoffs.

I also hope they hire some veteran coaches to put around Mitch.

FYI.... this is the guy who is given a lot of credit for developing Giannis. Solid move for the Spurs and nice to see them go outside the family for help.
