Turned this on to see we'd had a huge run to get ahead. And then three set points. And then crashed into the wall. Reversion to the mean after those miracle rallies to win in early season?

I’m having a bad feeling about this week. We’re up against 2 quality opponents and haven’t been playing our best recently. Hope my gut is wrong.

Unfortunately, my gut wasn’t wrong.

Hope we learn from it but I’m now worried about us being a top 4 seed

Our expectations were raised by having a great early start to the season despite a lot of youth we're had to depend on. We survived some shakiness against lesser SEC teams, but those with size and a solid all-around game will remain an issue.

Wait what was personal about this? Is there a storyline with Kentucky that I don’t know about?

Uh, Hudson wasn’t on the Kentucky team we beat last year. Girl please

This match is a perfect example of what I mean about a focus on serving errors focusing too much on the wrong thing.

5 service errors in a 3 set sweep.

The bigger problem is they couldn't score when they needed to from the service line. In set two they had 3 separate set points that Kentucky killed with first ball side outs. In set 3 they did the same sort of thing alternating with Kentucky for late points. Constantly they attacked Deleye with the serve, and constantly she was dotting the setter with 3 option attacks. At one point in the 2nd set before the 10-1 run, Kentucky was converting sideouts at an 81.5% rate. Without any notable service errors. As it was, Kentucky ended with a 70% sideout.

There are other issues with this team, but against Elite Eight and beyond type opponents, you simply must be able to consistently get the other team out of system. This Texas team has a lot of weak service rotations that put no pressure on the opponent. Really Halter and Stafford are the only consistent serving threats on the team.

The announcer, Holly McPeak, kept calling for Texas to serve with more pace, but we haven't served with pace all year. We don't put servers at the line who can serve with pace. And then when we do put Harvey or Bunton back there for serving, they're terrible on defense. They look like fish out of water.

Compare that with Kentucky. Their two pins, their setter, their libero and their DS all serve effectively. In the first set they were eating Halter up way worse than we were against Deleye, their OH.

That's the game of volleyball right there. Whatever other issues we have, elite teams have to be able to consistently get their opponent out of system on the serve. Otherwise at the highest levels they're going to make you pay. And all you have to do to win the set is be the eensiest more effective from the service line than your opponent, then you win the set. Obviously there's way more to it than that, but that's the basic fundamental formula.

You can say what you want but ppl were definitely worry about why we weren’t #1 but oh well who cares.

I think the youth of this team is starting to show but hopefully it doesn’t last long

Well, they shouldn't have been. Nebraska has always looked like the best team in the country. Certainly since conference play started.

The team has issues with middle blocking production, serving weak, and the setting is often sus.

But we have excellent pin production from both OHes and the opposite. Both Stafford and Spears are back row options. Halter and Gary are an elite defensive duo when they're on, which is most of the time.

Maybe it's youth. Mostly I think it's just a flawed team. I enjoy watching them anyway. It's been a fun year.

Sorry, couldn't see the game because fuck the Mouse. So, what were our key issues today?

We didn’t really get them out of system much

They outdug us, we barely out locked them

We lost 2 sets in extra points. The only kicked our ass in set 1

I think Elliot gets too stubborn/insistent about serving certain players. Usually the other team’s best pin hitter. I understand why he does it, but when you’re getting beat 2 sets to 0, and Deleye is consistently passing lights out, maybe try someone else. Your not going to tire her out when they are beating you that badly.

Yeah if someone is struggling to pass the ball, then by all means, keep the serve on 'em. In beach vball sometimes you can serve the weaker hitter or passer from the other team into a rhythm, actually helping them. That probably applies sometimes indoor as well. Gotta be willing to change shit up if needed. As a player, I had a decent topspin jumpserve, but I got a ton of mileage out of changing shit up all the time, like a baseball pitcher. I did everything. Topspin jumper, standing topspin, cut serves, floater, varying pace, short/deep, serving from all across the serving line, serving from way off the line or right on it, crosscourt/down the line/up the middle, etc, etc. Anything to keep the other team from settling into a rhythm. And more often than not, that worked. I didn't see this match, but I've noticed we don't seem to have much variation in  our serving.

Semi-related csb: Once in the firefighter olympics state bvb tournament, we had this guy on the other team in the tank. It was July. Old rules, big court, sideout scoring. Grinding. He was hot, and he was fucked. We were cruising. We had gone undefeated in pool play, and this was like the third round of single elim. All we had to do was keep it on this guy, and we were through to the semis. My partner Alan knew the guy, and started feeling bad for him. He started serving the other guy instead, giving his friend a break and getting them into a rhythm. Kept doing it. They ended up coming back to beat us like 18-16 or some shit. Fuck Alan. Never played with him again. Dipshit motherfucker. Wasted my fucking Saturday.  /rant
