Watching for the first time and about halfway through season 4. It's a slow burn at times, but I'm enjoying it overall. I can definitely see the shift in Don during this season.

timely bump as i've been rewatching this over the past couple of months.  i'm halfway through season 6.  i think my biggest take away thus far is that i did not realize at the time how fucking great the end of season 5 was.  the last episode was kinda meh, but the 3-4 episodes that preceeded it were all bangers.  maybe the best overall stretch of the show.

Great series, great writing, great characters.  But no mention yet of Joan Holloway? Am I the only one who occasionally wishes this series had aired on HBO?  Because, well, a "True Detective Season 1 Episode Two-esque Scene" with Joan Holloway, well, I've been to my bunk often at the thought...

So, just how many cigarettes do you think they smoked making this festival of debauchery?

I heard they used some sort of fake cigarettes.

And enjoy. It’s as good a television product as has ever been produced.

Yeah I believe Jon Hamm confirmed this. He said some of his younger co-stars smoked the real things, and became sick during shooting.

I read in an interview somewhere that it's some sort of herbal cigarette with no tobacco or nicotine.

Just finished my run through and loved the ending. What they did with Don reminds me of Walter White, you appreciate him and admire him, then begin to feel bad for him almost to the point of dislike, but by the end he redeems himself.

Yeah, fake herbal smokes.  PROTIP:  if you ffwd through all the solo Betty scenes you should be able to get through the entire series before OSU.

Which also happens to be what young utee94 used to replace the stolen aged tequila in his parents' liquor cabinet circa 1988.

My dad didn't discover it until sometime in the late 90s.  We had a good laugh over it.

Dad had a gallon of 140 proof tequila that coincidentally looked exactly like Listerine to any snooping school teacher. Good ol tap water did the trick. It was around 90 proof when I was done.

I finished up my rewatch a couple of weeks back.  I had seen seasons 1-4 a million times, and 5 a few, but don't think I had ever rewatched seasons 6 or 7 after they originally aired so there was definitely some stuff I didn't remember.  For instance, I didn't really remember how bad and unlikable Don got in season 6.  I still was on his side for most things, but man he was a complete asshole at certain times.  But man oh man it was still so satisfying when he ultimately defeated Jim Cutler at the end of the first part of season 7.  "The Strategy" and "Waterloo" might just be the two strongest back to back episodes the series ever did.

I also remember being initially offput by Don's little adventure at the very end of the series, but on a second watch, it made complete narrative sense.  McCann was indeed a soulless "sausage factory" as Don called it back in season 3 and I can definitely see Don saying "fuck this" and getting out.  In fact, I kind of hate that the final scene implies that he ultimately went back.  I wish we could get some sort of epilogue season where it showed that Don went back, did the Coke thing, and ultimately left and just did something else with his life.

Overall, I think seasons 4-5 were the show at it's absolute peak, but the whole thing is a fucking masterpiece.
