I saw that Matsuzawa is a finalist for the Lou Groza. That one has to be the easiest one to predict I would think. No way the Tokyo Toe doesn’t win that award.

So he is better than the ou kicker? Not looking up kicker side by side stats but he too is good.

Matsuzawa did not miss a single kick all year until the 3rd quarter of the last regular season game. He’s the best kicker in college football. That he pulled this off just six years after first deciding to play the sport makes the accomplishment even more remarkable.

Love (ND), Mendoza (Indiana), Pavia (Vanderbilt), Sayin (OSU) are Heisman finalists.

The Burlsworth Foundation is run by die-hard Arkies. If Taaffe couldn't win it this year, it confirms they are never going to give the trophy to a Texas player.

Mitch Sherman: Fernando Mendoza narrowly beats Diego Pavia in Heisman straw poll

Quote

All that’s left to do is count the votes. The 2025 Heisman Trophy race did not end with the marquee victory by Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza on Saturday against Ohio State. In The Athletic’s final straw poll of writers and editors, Mendoza edged Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia by three points. Just one voter could have flipped the result.

The actual trophy will be awarded Saturday in New York. Mendoza, Pavia, Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin were named finalists Monday. Pavia gained ground on Mendoza from a week ago, picking up a slight majority of the support that Sayin relinquished after the Buckeyes were held scoreless in the second half against the Hoosiers in the Big Ten championship.

Mendoza threw for 222 yards on 15-of-23 passing in the 13-10 win with one touchdown and one interception. He led an 88-yard drive in the third quarter to put Indiana on top for good. And Mendoza helped IU sustain a pair of drives in the fourth quarter that chewed more than eight minutes of clock. Mendoza punctuated his final statement in memorable fashion. His 33-yard strike to Charlie Becker on third-and-6 from the Indiana 24 with 2:26 remaining effectively secured victory in the No. 1-vs.-No. 2 matchup.

With the win, Indiana moved to 13-0 and earned the top seed in the College Football Playoff. A junior who spent three years at Cal and entered college as a three-star prospect out of Miami, Mendoza enjoyed a Heisman moment last month when he led the Hoosiers on an 80-yard drive in the final two minutes to win at Penn State. Mendoza beat Oregon and Iowa on the road. Was it enough?

Pavia capped his Heisman campaign on Nov. 29 by throwing for 268 yards and rushing for 165 in Vanderbilt’s 45-24 win at Tennessee. He directed the Commodores to their first 10-win season and a spot in the Dec. 31 ReliaQuest Bowl against Iowa. The Heisman will not wait for postseason results. Voting opened Saturday and closed Monday.

If the 930 voters see the race as it played out in our straw poll, the margin will be slim. The Athletic follows Heisman voting protocol, assigning three points to a first-place vote, two for second place and one for third.

In one fewer game, Pavia threw for more yards than Mendoza (3,192 to 2,980). Mendoza owns the edge in yards per attempt (9.43 to 9.39), touchdown-to-interception ratio (33-6 to 27-8) and completion percentage (71.5 to 71.2).

Pavia’s rushing edge is significant — 826 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground to Mendoza’s 240 yards and six touchdowns. But Mendoza also has an edge in team success. This final straw poll featured the narrowest gap of the season between first and second place. And it reflected the clearest separation between the top three contenders and the rest of the field.

In 11 weeks, 32 players received a first-, second, or third-place vote. A season-low seven were named in this poll. Love placed a strong third. He received mention on 21 of 26 ballots and collected the lone first-place vote not awarded to Mendoza or Pavia.

Concepcion and Niblett had virtually identical stats as returners. So of course the anti-Texas bias came into play and they defaulted to snubbing Niblett.

They'll likely do the same and name Howell as SEC DL of the Year ahead of Simmons.

And it's BS that Taaffe didn't win the Burlsworth Trophy, but the Arky hillbillies who decide that award are biased against Texas as well.

Such a great trophy for this particular award. Fucking block of granite.  Absolutely love it.

One guy for all of these?  I mean, I love it for Jacob Rodriguez, but damn, other dudes played too.

So how does one guy claim three different awards? It’s cool and whatnot and doesn’t matter, but just more curious than anything. I don’t keep up real well with this stuff.

I mean how is this possible? This is a school that had Bettis, Lee Benton (great college back), Ricky Watters and a whole host of other talented backs over the years. It doesn’t seem possible.

Only started in 1990

Texas players have won it five times.

Well there you go. That’s a good reason. The Horns have had some phenomenal backs over that span. Ricky is still my favorite.

I bet most of yall are more upset than the actual players.

I don't know. The players are pretty damn competitive. And this is their actual lives.

It's 4 actually. Nagurski, Butkus, Lombardi, and now Bednarik.

He's just having one of the best seasons a LB has ever had, statistically. Far better than Manti Teo's Heisman runner up season, for the sake of comparison. He's responsible for 11 turnovers by himself, most teams don't break 20 total on the season. He's been the highest graded player (not just defensive player) in college football for the entire season per PFF.

He's also one of the few players I saw last season take on Skattebo head on and win. He's just one of those dudes, knows exactly what he needs to do in every situation, just flies around and makes plays, great leader, etc etc. Every team has had one from time to time, he'll be sorely missed after this season. Just one of those completely irreplaceable players, no matter how good/talented the next guy up is.

e: It's why it's just objectively a complete joke that he wasn't invited to the Heisman ceremony at least. They didn't have to trim it to 4, they invited 5 players last  season. Every Tech fan knew he was never going to win it no matter how much they padded his stats with offensive touchdowns and shit, but he 1000% deserved to be there.
