I don't know if it qualifies as a "news" story that reminds you of Surly, but here's a YouTube video of an alligator found dead with an erect penis. Somehow, I thought it should go in this thread. It reminded me of Surly.

 Somebody getting fired.

Man posing as Las Vegas hotel owner steals more than $1M in casino con job

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man is accused of posing as a Las Vegas hotel owner and convincing a casino employee to give him more than $1 million in bogus payments for fire safety equipment, documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained Monday said.

Erik Gutierrez, 23, is charged with theft of more than $100,000, records said.

On June 17, Las Vegas Metro police responded to the Circa Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas for a report of a possible scam, documents said. A person from the hotel’s security office told detectives “an unknown person” had contacted the casino cage “claiming to be the owner of the hotel” and asking for $320,000 for an emergency payment to the fire department, police wrote in court documents.

Police interviewed the cage supervisor, who said they received a phone call from a person who claimed they were the hotel’s owner. The person, who was not the hotel’s owner, said “the fire department needed to do a check on the fire extinguishers” and “they would need a payment for further safety devices,” documents said.

The cage supervisor brought the money in four installments to the unknown person at different off-site locations, documents said. The payments totaled $314,000, $350,000, and $500,000, plus three smaller deposits, resulting in a loss of $1,170,000 to the hotel, documents said. The employee believed she was on the phone with the hotel’s owner and texting with her manager, police said.

Documents also indicate she believed she was meeting with the hotel owner’s attorney.

Detectives tracked the vehicle involved in the suspected theft, finding its registered owner. Police suspect the car belonged to Gutierrez’s aunt with whom he lives.

Police also surveilled the home, seeing a different car arrive and then leave with Gutierrez and another man in it. Police searched the car, finding no money it it.

Around the same time, police obtained a search warrant of the home, finding identification belonging to Gutierrez, a “large bag of U.S. currency bundled together with the name Circa written on the bundle,” and other items, they said.

Police arrested Gutierrez at a gym on Sunday, June 18, they said. They later recovered nearly $850,000. Police did not know as of the writing of his arrest report last week who was given the outstanding $314,000, they said. Another man in the car with Gutierrez before his arrest was not detained.

Judge Amy Ferreira set Gutierrez’s bail at $25,000 and ordered him to stay away from Circa and the Fremont Street Experience if he posts bond, documents said.

“Although I love a good PR story, this isn’t one of them,” Derek Stevens, CEO of Circa, said in a statement. “Circa Resort & Casino is cooperating with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in this investigation. We greatly appreciate their efforts to date and cannot comment further due to an ongoing investigation.”

Sriracha sauce is selling for as much as $120 amid prolonged shortage

The prolonged shortage of a certain red sauce is making the black market go wild.

Prices of Sriracha sauce are as high as $70 on eBay as people look to snap up the spicy sauce — and they’re even steeper on Amazon, up to $124. Huy Fong Foods, which makes the rooster-adorned bottled sauce, has been dealing with a years-long shortage of the chilis, which is hurting production and causing some shortages.

A search on eBay shows prices for various sized bottles ranging from $39.98 for 17-ounce bottles to a 28-ounce bottle for nearly $70. In both instances, shipping is an additional fee, jacking up the price even more.

Prices are even higher on Amazon, where one seller is offering a 2-pack for $124. Of course, it’s unclear if anyone is actually paying these exorbitant prices, considering a 17-ounce bottle typically costs around $5.

The company recently told CNN that it’s still experiencing a shortage of raw materials. “Although some production did resume this past fall season, we continue to have a limited supply that continues to affect our production. At this time, we have no estimations of when supply will increase,” a Huy Fong spokesperson said.

“We are grateful for your continued patience and understanding during this unprecedented inventory shortage. We are currently working on trying to avoid future shortages,” the company added.

There’s been a shortage for the past three years, as Huy Fong has said that its chili peppers have consistently been in short supply. Last year, it temporarily stopped orders because of the shortage, which also affected its Chili Garlic and Sambal Oelek products.

That's nuts! Chinese villager uses a HAND GRENADE to crack walnuts for 25 years without realising

  • The man from Ankang had been using the tool without realising what it was
  • He only realised when he was handed a leaflet about explosives
  • According to villagers, the man had used the grenade for the past 25 years

The man who went on a violent, sexually charged rampage in Las Vegas over the weekend was drugged ... at least according to his family.

Brian Danilczyk downed a drink laced with hallucinogenics, causing him to slug a one-legged man at the Flamingo Hotel Sunday, his wife reportedly told the press.

Danilczyk then got naked and barged inside Harrah's Hotel and Casino, where he flaunted his genitals and danced on top of a poker table. Vegas cops wrestled Brian to the floor, arresting him for indecent exposure and disorderly conduct.

Dallas couple who called 911 to report kidnapping suspect not eligible for reward, Crime Stoppers says

A Dallas couple who called 911 to report a kidnapping suspect was told they are not eligible for a Crime Stoppers reward.

The man was wanted for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 7-year-old girl, and the couple’s 911 call led to his arrest.

Briana and Kenyatta Jordan were coming home from lunch on July 7 when they noticed a face they recognized from the news and a Crime Stoppers billboard: 41-year-old Leonard Neal.

With six children of their own, the Jordans had taken a good look at the man accused of abducting a 9-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl.

Police say Neal released the boy, but the girl was missing for 12 hours. Police say he sexually assaulted her.

"That could have been our oldest two kids," Briana said.

The Jordans did not just call the police. Once Neal got on the bus, they knew they needed to follow it.

After getting disconnected from 911, a Dallas police officer called Kenyatta.

"Once we made the right on Polk, he said, 'That's y'all's minivan?’ I said yes," he recalled. "He said, ‘We are pulling up behind you. So y'all can get out of the way now.’"

Before police arrested Neal, he cut his throat. Police later released this mug shot.

Later the Jordans learned about the Crime Stoppers reward that had been offered for Neal, a most wanted fugitive. But when they asked about it, they were told they were not eligible because they called 911 instead of the Crime Stoppers number.

The couple feels like it was a bait and switch.

Dallas police said the 41-year-old man accused of abducting a 9-year-old boy and his 7-year-old sister last month has been taken into custody.

"We dialed 911 instead of Crime Stoppers. We are not able to get the reward? Squint," they said.

As police work to build trust with the community, the Jordans say this feels like a breach of that trust.

"It feels like we were misled," they said.

On DPD's website, it urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers or 911. Crime Stoppers is operated by the North Texas Crime Commission, a cooperative partnership.

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia told FOX 4 in a statement, "While DPD does not have input on the criteria that must be met for a Crime Stoppers reward, when a unique set of circumstances arises, we certainly can open conversations that will help improve services, prevent crime or help to solve investigations in our city."

The Jordans are hopeful that will happen in their case.

"They should be held to their word," they said.

FOX 4 spoke with a Crime Stoppers board member. He said the rewards are only paid to people who call the tip line, based on Texas law.

The Jordans believe if they had tried to find the crime stoppers tip line instead of 911, Neal might still be on the run.

FOX 4 will be asking Texas lawmakers if it may be time for the statute to change.

Human waste leaking from a tractor trailer on a Connecticut highway caused crashes including one involving two state police cruisers as vehicles spun out of control, authorities said.

No major injuries were reported in Monday night’s mayhem on Interstate 95 in Bridgeport. Troopers arrested the truck driver on several charges, alleging he knew there was a leak but kept driving.

The wrecks began shortly after 11 p.m. when the leaking waste caused extremely slick conditions in the northbound lanes, state police said.
A motorcycle rider lost control and fell onto the road, ending up in a hospital with minor injuries. Vehicles crashed into other vehicles and concrete barriers.

Another tractor trailer skidded into a parked state police cruiser, which then struck a second parked cruiser in the median. Both cruisers were unoccupied as troopers were helping others involved in wrecks.

Super sad one here <no sarcasm>.  Just awful.

Dog fell into an uncovered cistern, one hunter went in to save it, overcome by decomposition fumes from other animals that had previously gone in, then two more hunters tried to get the first hunter out.  They too were overcome.  Terrible.

Used this as a safety topic at work yesterday.  Any kind of tank can have a hazardous atmosphere, so don't enter without testing.  Hydrogen sulfide kills quickly.

And if you see someone down in an enclosed space, get help; don't go in after them.  Better one death than two or, as in this case, three.
