  • Tom Herman Fired as UT Football Coach

    texifornia
Almost as unceremonious as his past 2 victories to finish off the season, Tom "the turtle" Herman has been removed as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns.

We don't really wish you anything, but to get the hell out of here Tom.

Bigger news than aggy football, stealing the limelight.

Can't find the post to reply to, but @Bluemoon3287 is right, a relapse for Sarkisian is a risk, period.  Could be stress, could be winning too much (half serious about that).

I would submit, though, that it's not like he's fresh out of rehab or that OCing for Nick Saban is some kind of low-stress environment.

Relapse is an issue until it isn't.  And then it still is.

Not sure he is completely safe but I’d think Boulware could stay on.

Unless Jeff Banks starts coaching a new position Boulware is most likely gone.

Maybe, but I would think Herman’s agent would leak that’s he’s leaving for a different job rather than it being widely reported Herman’s fired. Either way, if it was Sark, I would’ve hoped we’d wait a week so he could come in immediately as Herman is let go but also be coming off a title win.

there's no way Herman accepts another job until he's fired because he does not want any indication at all he's quitting the job and forfeiting that sweet 15 million in free dollars

We probably put our last full court press on Meyer.

Probably the best available for immediate recruiting of the ACTUALLY AVAILABLE candidates.  At the current hottest cfb program that's the best pipeline to the NFL.  A gamble, but there's logic.

I think it’s so we don’t look like auburn. CDC had to get an agreement in place before the firing.

Happy to see Herman go. He was failing at basic game time decisions and not developing players. Didn't know much about the new guy until I read the first few pages of this thread. I am not against second chances. 'Bama has been dominant for more than a decade so hoping for the best. We got so much talent that some basic competent coaching should at least keep us in top 15. If Sark after dark is out to redeem himself then maybe this turns out to be great. I am just hopeful because of the change.

CdC axed him to leave then so he could turn the lights out on the sorriest decade in Longhorn football history.

tell me how much better uga is under KS than it was under MR?  not much.  uga was already within striking distance of being in the top 3.  they continue to be second to Florida most years and don't beat Bama and lose to Tom Herman and nearly lose to Cincy.  MR and KS are Mack Brown at best.  We had Urban Meyer's eyes on us and we failed.  A guy known to be drunk at practice as the HC with a barely above 500 record was our choice.  pardon me but I'm no where near the dumbest fucking thing that's been said on this board.

UGA is better.  They have talent to match anybody, including Alabama.  They just can't get over the bama hump.  4 straight NY6 bowls.  4 straight top 10 finishes.  An SEC and 3 division titles in 4 years.   Richt had 3 unranked seasons in his last 6.  Richt had 2 SEC and 5 division titles in 15 years.

So much fan consternation over Sark.  But before I address that, screw Wanker Bob and every other dipshit outsider who thinks Texas should be satisfied with the current state of the program.  Recruiting is a mess. A&M is surging, OU is kicking our ass, and we don't have time to eff around and hope that Herman can take it to the next level.  Herman might be a good coach, but we don't have the luxury of time to find out. CDC had to make a move.

I get the wory over Sark. I have big concerns too.  But I get the decision. Once Meyer said no, every choice had risk. Kelly hasn't proven he can win at the highest level. Campbell is an unknown at the big boy programs. Dabo and Day were unattainable.
Sark supposedly is incredibly talented. Drinking is what derailed his success. He's worked under Saban and learned how to assemble championship teams. As Burt said earlier in the thread, this is a high risk high reward choice. I'd rather try that than watch Kelly get his ass kicked in the Big 12 championship every year by OU.

More or less where I’m at. I don’t like the hire but Herman was beyond the point of no return. Hoping for the best even if I think that’s less likely than not.

Don’t know what to think about the Sark hire....

But seriously what does Sarks issue with booze (assuming he’s somehow restrained those demons) have to do with him being the new HC?  I think we’ve all seen a few individuals up close who have turned away from drugs, excessive alcohol use, and other addictions and have done well for themselves and those they influence.

Wrong. His offenses at ISU and UH weren’t all that good and plenty of people pointed that out.

Comparing Herman’s short history to Sark’s laughable. We know way more about Sark as an offensive coach than we did Herman.

Didn't we average the most points in UT history this year?

I's somewhat stunned that Herman got fired considering what 2020 has been like. Then again, you cannot allow politics to enter a locker room and maintain support of the entire team. Don't know about Sarkisian.  I hope I'm wrong but this hire has John Mackovic written all over it.

UGA has a hard time deciding if they want to be at bowl game or not.  They showed up a little late against Cincy yesterday, but it looked like for three quarters they didn’t want to be there

Only Drayton and maybe Hurzeler (depending on the DC hire) are safe.

So you’re not hearing there’s any chance he keeps Ash? On the bright side, he did a good job of hiring Wilcox as DC when he went to USC. That guy knows how to coach a defense.

1.) We’ve all seen those who haven’t. 2.) Supposedly Herman’s conduct, including his fondness of alcohol, is part of the reason he has a bad relationship with admin/donors. Knowing what kind of stress the Texas job entails on that front as well as the football front, and the financial commitment the school will make, it’s perfectly fair to question whether or not an alcoholic should hold that position.

    • I was bored and went through the coaching staffs for each of the remaining playoff teams.  Listed below are the coaches who seemed like possibilities to me (but I'm an idiot).  They all have some college coaching experience and in the case of one an extensive HS coaching background.  A couple of entries have pretty light resumes but have long NFL careers.

      Houston Texans:
Jacques Cesaire DL coach - 5 years at Univ of San Diego as DL coach, 9 years as DE for San Diego Chargers
      Rod Wright Asst DL Coach

      Green Bay Packers:
Jerry Montgomery DL coach -11 years in college at OU, Michigan, Wyoming.  Last 9 years in NFL

      Detroit Lions:
John Scott Jr. DL Coach - First year in Detroit.  Previously coached at Penn St., South Carolina, and Arkansas
Wayne Blair QC - Long time Florida HS head coach, spent last two years coaching DLine in Detroit.  Played at Tulane and CFL

      Buffalo Bills:
Marcus West Asst D-Line - Prior to joining Bills in 2022 spent 14 years as college D-Line coach (Charlotte, Minn, Austin Peay)

      San Francisco 49ers:
Darryl Tapp Asst D-Line - 12 year NFL veteran.  Coached D-Line at V-Tech for 2 seasons.  Joined 49ers in 2022.

    • I'm not doing well about it, at all.

That's because we had our championship window of opportunity, which is now closed.

Why? Because now we face another, more potent opponent. The Fightin' Aggies of Texas A&M University.
They have THE best traditions in all of college. Plus, they've already surpassed us in baseball and basketball. Don't believe me? Consider this recent post from TexasAgs: "We've already surpassed them in baseball and basketball."

What's more, they demonstrated an unquenchable commitment to success when they paid a coach $78 MILLION to leave. That's right. $78 million to a coach they had presented a future national championship trophy to stop coaching, and they did it mid-season without a replacement locked-in. While it seems like this is poor financial management by their athletic department, it shows a spirit of winning we could only dream about.

Now, they've brought in a coach who gets them. That's right. He EMBRACES their traditions. And he has a great nickname, The Elk, which pairs with The Station quite nicely. We don't even have an amazing nickname for our city.

      +

Finally, when you compare the two football programs, A&M comes out ahead. As many of their posters continually point out, they faced a much better Alabama team than we did AND ALMOST WON. Plus, they paid tribute to their near-win against the second-best team in the Big 12.

Now that they've moved on from many of their players from the best recruiting class of all time, and have had multiple highly ranked recruits opt out, they are ready to win even more championships with hardworking farm boys from small towns.

Thanks for indulging my meltdown. I'm skeered real good.
