  • Tom Herman Fired as UT Football Coach

    texifornia
Almost as unceremonious as his past 2 victories to finish off the season, Tom "the turtle" Herman has been removed as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns.

We don't really wish you anything, but to get the hell out of here Tom.

Nice. Dominate the news cycle on aggy's big day, hopefully gets a ring, and then goes and recruits while wearing it.

And what happens if Bama loses?

Funny how I will suddenly be rooting more for Alabama in that game than I ever could have imagined possible.  Wait! is it still 2020?  Did I fall into a time warp?!?

    Players meeting was at 1530.

Plus CDC may want to address the team and staff first about his decision before introducing Sark to them

Announcing the same day aggy is playing was not lost on the University

We’ve gone from the “learn on the job” program to the “second chance” program.

I I’m very thankful Herman is gone, but what the fuck are we thinking with Sark? He couldn’t handle USC. What made our boosters think he can handle Texas?

Maybe because he put the plug in the jug.

Announcing that Texas made yet another horrible hire on same day as aggy game is net win for aggy.  This isn't just a failure.  It's a miserable failure.  The guy is 46-35 all time.  Never was competitive for a conference title.  2-2 in bowls.  The guy we're sending away with $15 million payday has a better resume.  Aggy is nothing but giddy with this news.

I still can't help but think about how infatuated most of y'all were for so many years with Herman.  I just don't get it.  Not saying "I told you so" but tens of millions of dollars later for a guy who averaged 5 losses/year.  What was the fucking infatuation?  I just never got it with that guy.  I was way more enamored with Strong.  Seriously, what was the delusion?

I guess.  But announcing that Steve Sarkisian is going to be your next head coach shows exactly how far this program has fallen into the toilet.

    And continues to be.

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas at Austin has named Steve Sarkisian, currently offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide, head coach of the Longhorn football team. He replaces Tom Herman, who was released earlier today.

Sarkisian has a strong track record as both an offensive coordinator and head coach in both Division I college football and the NFL. He also brings to the Longhorn football program extensive experience coaching in conference and national championship games and developing top talent, including three Heisman Trophy finalists.

"On Jan. 4, 2006, I was the USC quarterback coach when we played Texas in that famed national championship game. There has always been something special about Longhorn football, its history and traditions – not just on that day – and I could never have imagined that 15 years later, I would join the Longhorns as their head coach," Sarkisian commented. "This is a unique and compelling opportunity to lead this storied program to the next level, competing once again amongst the best in college football."

Sarkisian was just this week named the Broyles Award winner, awarded to the top college football assistant coach, as he has helped lead the Crimson Tide to compete for the 2020 national championship.

"We are excited to have Steve Sarkisian join us and lead the next chapter of our football program," said Kevin Eltife, chairman of the UT System Board of Regents. "University of Texas football has a long and proud history of competing at the highest levels within our conference and nationally, and he brings with him the coaching caliber and championship experience needed to restore this kind of excellence to our program."

President Jay Hartzell said: "Hiring Steve Sarkisian represents a critical investment in our football program's future, not just for our student-athletes, but for all of Longhorn Nation. Our entire community benefits from a healthy and successful athletics program, and naming Steve as our coach infuses our football program with the necessary guidance and expertise to drive further success."

Prior to joining Alabama in 2019, Sarkisian spent two years as offensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons, four years as an assistant and two as head coach at the University of Southern California, and five years as head coach at the University of Washington. His head coaching record is 46-35 overall and 2-2 in bowl games.

"Steve Sarkisian is one of the top offensive minds in the game of football, which he has proved over and over during his time with USC, Atlanta, and most recently, Alabama," said Chris Del Conte, vice president and athletics director of The University of Texas at Austin. "We are confident our players and coaches will thrive under his leadership and in response to his energy and passion for the game."

Same. I think there's a lot more potential and pedigree here than Herman.

Are you surprised? We’ve had 2 awful hires in a row, haven’t won our conference in 12 years and aren’t even a fringe playoff team.

Not to mention people got REALLY invested in Urban, which never seemed that likely.

Yeah, Strong was a decent guy with a sense of ethics.  He was also a shitty football coach, but was a solid man.  Herman is a con-man with a serious drug problem who fucks around on his wife and robs schools of millions of dollars.  There's a difference.  Both sucked at big-time football coaching, but I'd let one around my family.  Herman is a drug-addicted, womanizing cunt who steals money for a living.

Well a lot of folks hated the Mack hire.  Then only a small minority hated the Strong and Herman hires.  So maybe my wild coincidental grasping at straws will pay off here

I would take a Mack arc with Sark in an instant.

    • I was bored and went through the coaching staffs for each of the remaining playoff teams.  Listed below are the coaches who seemed like possibilities to me (but I'm an idiot).  They all have some college coaching experience and in the case of one an extensive HS coaching background.  A couple of entries have pretty light resumes but have long NFL careers.

      Houston Texans:
Jacques Cesaire DL coach - 5 years at Univ of San Diego as DL coach, 9 years as DE for San Diego Chargers
      Rod Wright Asst DL Coach

      Green Bay Packers:
Jerry Montgomery DL coach -11 years in college at OU, Michigan, Wyoming.  Last 9 years in NFL

      Detroit Lions:
John Scott Jr. DL Coach - First year in Detroit.  Previously coached at Penn St., South Carolina, and Arkansas
Wayne Blair QC - Long time Florida HS head coach, spent last two years coaching DLine in Detroit.  Played at Tulane and CFL

      Buffalo Bills:
Marcus West Asst D-Line - Prior to joining Bills in 2022 spent 14 years as college D-Line coach (Charlotte, Minn, Austin Peay)

      San Francisco 49ers:
Darryl Tapp Asst D-Line - 12 year NFL veteran.  Coached D-Line at V-Tech for 2 seasons.  Joined 49ers in 2022.

    • I'm not doing well about it, at all.

That's because we had our championship window of opportunity, which is now closed.

Why? Because now we face another, more potent opponent. The Fightin' Aggies of Texas A&M University.
They have THE best traditions in all of college. Plus, they've already surpassed us in baseball and basketball. Don't believe me? Consider this recent post from TexasAgs: "We've already surpassed them in baseball and basketball."

What's more, they demonstrated an unquenchable commitment to success when they paid a coach $78 MILLION to leave. That's right. $78 million to a coach they had presented a future national championship trophy to stop coaching, and they did it mid-season without a replacement locked-in. While it seems like this is poor financial management by their athletic department, it shows a spirit of winning we could only dream about.

Now, they've brought in a coach who gets them. That's right. He EMBRACES their traditions. And he has a great nickname, The Elk, which pairs with The Station quite nicely. We don't even have an amazing nickname for our city.

      +

Finally, when you compare the two football programs, A&M comes out ahead. As many of their posters continually point out, they faced a much better Alabama team than we did AND ALMOST WON. Plus, they paid tribute to their near-win against the second-best team in the Big 12.

Now that they've moved on from many of their players from the best recruiting class of all time, and have had multiple highly ranked recruits opt out, they are ready to win even more championships with hardworking farm boys from small towns.

Thanks for indulging my meltdown. I'm skeered real good.
