  2. Israel Gaza: What Gaza's death toll says about the war At least 20,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been reported killed since Israel began bombing the territory in the wake of Hamas's 7 October attacks. BBC Verify examines what Gaza's death toll reveals about the conflict. On average, nearly 300 people have been killed each day since the start of the conflict, excluding the seven-day ceasefire, data from Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry indicates. The World Health Organization's regional emergency director Richard Brennan says he considers these casualty figures trustworthy. Counting the dead is a challenge in any war zone, and doctors in Gaza say the death toll is likely to be significantly higher as it does not include bodies buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings or those not taken to hospitals. BBC Verify has looked in detail at the figures, how they compare with other conflicts and the impact on Gaza's young population. A high death toll The pace of killing in this war has been "exceptionally high", says Prof Michael Spagat, who specialises in examining death tolls in conflicts around the world, such as the 2003 Iraq war, Colombia's civil conflict, wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo as well as previous wars between Israel and Gaza. "Within the series of Gaza wars stretching back to 2008, the current one is unprecedented both for the number of people killed and for the indiscriminateness of the killing," he adds. The 20,000 figure represents almost 1% of Gaza's 2.2 million population. The BBC has spoken to military experts who have described the wide variety of bombs used by Israel - some about 100lb and others as large as 2000lb - as having directly contributed to the scale of fatalities in this conflict. Being near the impact of the largest bombs is like "surfing on the Earth as the shockwave momentarily liquefies the ground", says Marc Garlasco, a former senior intelligence analyst at the Pentagon and former UN war crimes investigator, who spoke to victims and witnesses of these bombs. What makes them even more devastating is that Gaza has a very high population density. It is just 41km (25 miles) long and 10km (six miles) wide. On average, before the conflict, there were more than 5,700 people per sq km in Gaza - very similar to the average density in London. Israel began its military campaign in Gaza in the wake of Hamas' attacks, in which 1,200 people were killed, most of them civilians. Three months later, it is facing mounting pressure over the number of civilian casualties. In worldwide conflicts between 2011 and 2021, on average 90% of fatalities were civilians when explosive weapons were used on populated areas, according to the research and advocacy group Action on Armed Violence. According to US intelligence assessments seen by CNN, in this war, Israel had dropped more than 29,000 bombs on Gaza since the war began and mid-December, with 40-45% of these unguided.
  3. They'd kill it like they did in 2013, the last time a major immigration reform bill was brought to the House.
  4. Detroit cop charged with killing 71-year-old man by punching his face A Detroit police officer has been charged with manslaughter for allegedly punching a 71-year-old man in the face outside a bowling alley during a disorderly conduct call, delivering a blow that hospitalized the man for three weeks before ultimately claiming his life. According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, the 29-year-old officer's punch knocked the elderly man to the ground, causing him to hit his head on the pavement. “Police officers frequently deal with citizens who are disorderly and verbally unpleasant," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Tuesday in announcing the charges against Officer Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown. "But the evidence in this case shows that the officer allegedly was the aggressor, and his actions went criminally beyond what was necessary in this situation. This behavior cannot be tolerated from our law enforcement.”
  5. Absolutely. I know next to nothing about maritime trade, except for the brief amount I learned from a YT video posted by @Bevo (I think?) last night. The latter part of it was the most interesting, dealing with insurance rates in the Red Sea and what flags vessels were flying under. Do we know if Chinese exports are shipped under Liberian or Panamanian flags, or are they under Chinese flags? The reason I'm asking is to know if Chinese commercial ships would be at risk and what China would be willing to do to protect its own economic interests. I'm kind of guessing they're not under the Chinese flag and could, therefore, be a target. So, yeah, they'll have to take the long way around, which would disrupt their own logistics of getting goods to market. With all these choke points to maritime trade suddenly being exposed (e.g., Panama Canal with low water, Suez blockage last year, Red Sea at large due to this shit, anything near Taiwan because of China), it really, really, really puts at risk the infrastructure undergirding global trade.
  6. Yeah, I'm not concerned about China getting involved on the other side against us, just whether they've joined the coalition to protect sea lanes.
  7. That's been the fear from the Palestinian/Arab perspective from the start. It's not solely that the Palestinian refugees will become the Egyptians' problem; there's also the issue of the "right of return". They're scared of another Nakba where they'll never be able to come back home.
  8. I haven't seen the list of the 20+ partners in this, but I do know that the US, France, AND CHINA, all have a sizeable presence in Djibouti, all with naval bases there. Given that it's just on the other side of the sea, it makes sense for all of them to be part of the operation. Do we know if China is participating, or are they hanging back?
  9. It's hard not to be cynical about this happening in the US because of our idiotic inaction. But for those guys over there, yeah, sincere sympathies.
  10. Cosmos, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
  11. Oh, yeah, same. I don't know how you could be a Texan without knowing a gob of them.
  12. Thank you. I killed my Xitter account and was going to ask the same.
  13. Can you explain what they mean here? Are they saying he's from eastern Ukraine or southern Russia or is the AI translating his last name literally? Btw, you should check out a new mockumentary-style series on Netflix called "1670." It's a Polish comedy that I think you'd get a kick out of.
  14. There's the Party, and then there's the voters. Yeah, I'd say about 75% of the Party wants that, but I'd argue that about 40% of people who vote Republican in the general election desire that outcome (i.e., fascist, authoritarian theocrats). The rest are what I'd call Reflexive Republicans, voting that way out of habit through either ignorance or naïveté. This latter group largely didn't vote in the primaries but will show up in the general election and just reflexively select Team R without actually knowing why other than some vague notion of conservatism. I'm certainly not downplaying the threat, though. Hell, I've been arguing since the early 1990s that the GOP was headed in this direction. But I will also argue we have two political problems here: First, the fascists. Second, those who are lazy, ill-informed, and/or naive team players. I realize this might hurt some feelings here among former Goppers, but I'd classify many of them as part of that second group, having been either ill-informed or naive Reflexive Republicans. For whatever reason, they didn't see the end game until the last few years.

  18. @Gatorubet From the above, here are the various engineering professions. This is apparently based on campaign contribution data from the FEC.

  20. Q: What the fuck is wrong with you, Fredericksburg? A: Idiotic paranoia. Sounds like it's going to be a lesson in FAFO and hilarious to watch. Texas Republicans in one rural county will hand count ballots. Experts say it’s “a recipe for disaster.”

  22. I started watching the comedy "1670" on Netflix last night and was pretty well entertained. It's about a very minor nobleman in Poland set in a small village (that he owns the smaller half of) during that year. He's an insecure and overconfident buffoon with a strict and frigid wife and three adult-ish kids: 2 sons (one the "bad boy" and the other a repressed priest) and one daughter (liberated intellectual). It's pretty amusing and bingeable, with short 35-minute episodes. I think there's only 8 in this first season. I've been watching it dubbed in English, which doesn't seem to detract from it at all. A lot of the humor is based on xenophobic stereotypes from a Polish perspective, many of them self-effacing, along with some contemporary sociopolitical themes. They seem to make fun of all sides. It might also help to know a few basics about Polish history, like quick references to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Winged Hussars, etc., but that's not really needed. I'll probably try to wrap it up tonight. ETA: This ended up being a really good show.
