Dumb Question Amnesty Thread (football edition)

The only true Hail Mary I remember for the Horns was at DKR right before the half of one of those shitty non conference games. Pretty sure it was Gilbert who threw it to maybe Kirkendoll or Malcolm Williams? The play someone posted of Stafford to Tony Jones had the impact of a Hail Mary, even though it was obviously a much shorter throw..

I was under the impression that the term 'Hail Mary' came into existence when Doug Flutie hit the winning TD pass for the Biston College Fightin' Jesuits against Miami back in the early '80s. No?

The first time I remember seeing or hearing "Hail Mary" referenced was Roger Staubach to Drew Pearson vs Minnesota back in 1975.

The first UT game that I attended in person was the 1970 game against UCLA in Austin, when the upper deck was still under construction.  UCLA became the first team to really figure out a defense for Texas' wishbone attack.  The Horns had the ball on the UCLA 45-yard line with 20 seconds left, trailing 17-13.  Eddie Phillips hit Cotton Speyrer with a touchdown pass over the middle to win the game with 12 seconds left.  That's the closest that I've seen in person.

Around 2:30 on this video clip.

Wait- did UCLA really have the ball on the Texas 15 for one more play? Why didn’t they try to kick a FG to tie? Even back then, that had to be better odds than trying to score a TD from the 15 (and I get that the game would have ended in a tie). Did they not have a TO left?

That defense Tommy Prothro and his coaches came up was called the mirror defense.

Basically every offensive back had a defender assigned to him man to man.

You basically just tackled your man whether he had the ball or not. It worked and Norte Dame ran a similar scheme when they beat us in the Cotton Bowl later that season.

We had the ball on the 15 after picking off a hail Mary and just went into victory formation.  Though that kneel down looked awkward, were you required to make it look like you tripped back then?
