The main driver of declining child bearing has changed over the last few decades from "fewer children per couple" to "fewer married couples"

This is a well-established finding that is counterintuitive for most: marriage and coupling rates are declining primarily amount lower educated individuals. A major part of this is likely changes in what women consider marriageable qualities. Related and also usually counter the expectations, those who are more highly educated also have much higher marriage rates (as opposed to broader "coupling"), higher birth rates, lower divorce rates, and attend church much more frequently.

I’m sorry, you can throw out whatever statistics you want, but they are in direct conflict with the TRUE bible of facts regarding procreation, the documentary Idiocracy. The stupid must be multiplying faster than the unstupid.

With the changes occurring only fairly recently, we haven't yet fully enjoyed the benefits of the smart kids! Or, more likely, we're making the genetically smart children dumber.

For at least the US, college educated women are becoming a larger percentage of high earners so they don’t need to marry to have a great life, financially speaking. Many do want a spouse/children but there is a problem with that due to a combination of their unrealistic expectations of men and many men failing to meet lower, reasonable expectations.

Add other elements like becoming used to staying home with COVID and declining alcohol rates, and I bet a fair number of younger people don’t even go out at night much to meet others. At least in comparison to what us old folks did in the 80s-00s.

as for declining rates in the rest of the world, no idea.

I didn't enjoy dating( until I did) 35 years ago.  I joke with the wife if something happened to her, how abruptly some of my future dates would end, because I just flat out don't deal with the bullshit very well.

Both of my DIL's have their Masters degrees and I feel like both sons hit the lottery with educated women with great hearts.  Currently have 2 grandkids from one couple who says they are done.  We'll see... still a glimmer of hope for a 3rd.  The other couple insists they will have zero children and I believe that is their feeling...today.  Holding out hope that it might change, but if not, it's their freaking lives- their choice.

4 people- 2 kiddos would definitely support the trend.

If you're earning $15/hr, you're probably not excited to go pay $60 to go to the movies with a date or $100+ for a dinner with drinks. Shit is more expensive every year and pay is flat.

The presidential crypto is doing gangbusters though!

So: dumb pagan childless cat ladies and gentlemen.

Some explanations, but it's almost certainly multifactorial.

Her charts on couples show almost universally declines from whenever the chart starts and that includes in the 1990s. So I'm calling bullshit on it being because of smartphones.

Funny. Japan's population is accelerating in its decline, but there is anti immigrant Japan First movement that is catching on. Uhhh, me thinks immigration is the least of their concerns. Immigration may be the only thing that saves that country from ceasing to exist in 100 years. Not surprisingly, the Japan First movement is being linked to Russia propaganda. Old people everywhere are just fucking stupid. Dumb, old people are Putin's wet dream.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/japanese-population-sees-record-drop-025259023.html

The population of Japanese nationals fell by a record amount -- more than 900,000 people -- in 2024, official data showed, as the country battles to reverse its perennially low birth rates.

While many developed countries are struggling with low birth rates, the problem is particularly acute in Japan where the population has been declining for years.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has called the situation a "quiet emergency", pledging family-friendly measures like more flexible working hours and free day care to try and reverse the trend.

Last year, the number of Japanese fell by 908,574, or 0.75 percent, to 120.65 million.

The decline -- for a 16th straight year -- was the largest drop since the survey began in 1968, the internal affairs ministry said Wednesday.

Foreign resident totals, however, were at their highest since records began in 2013.

There were 3.67 million foreigners as of January 1, 2025, representing nearly three percent of the whole population in Japan, which was more than 124.3 million as of that date.

The overall population of the country declined by 0.44 percent from 2023.

The latest figures come as the government struggles to raise stubbornly low birth rates, while frustration over inflation and other concerns among some voters prompted the rise of a new opposition party with a slogan of "Japanese First".

So, so much this.

There is only one genuinely effective solution to a decline in a country's native-born population in the modern era (that is, declines in population that aren't caused by some massive externality, like the plague): add to your population by immigration.  You can rage against it all you want, you can introduce all the incentives to have kids you can imagine.....but that approach has been shown to have minimal effect.

Is changing the makeup of your population by importing people from elsewhere going to change the "make-up and culture" of your country?  Of course.

But you need to pick your outcome.  Either a) rapid and continuing population decline, or b) stabilized population/moderate growth via immigration.  Every other point raised on the issue is just noise and delaying the conversation about the only real options.

And as to the dumb old people, Russia is following its standard play: Russia is suffering.  Russia does not win by stopping its own suffering (that's not even on the table).  Russia wins, instead, by making other countries suffer more than Russia.  Russia is losing 2% of its population a year?  Then Russia will pursue actions that make sure any rival countries lose at least 3% of their population a year.  And good old-fashioned nativist xenophobic bullshit ALWAYS works.  Always.  So, better that Japan whither away and disappear, then stabilize itself for the time being with dirty Filipinos and whatnot.

I think it's probably more the 70+ hour work weeks and rancid professional culture in Japan keeping people away from their families and without free time to nurture a family
