T/F can be all over the place.  A&M men, 4th at SEC, National Champs.  Auburn, 8th SEC, almost National Champs if they have a better 100m.  OU, 10th SEC, 6th Nationally.  That being said, like any sport teams vary year to year.  Florida is a good example.  They have the best staff right now and were 3x NC coming into this week, 12th SEC, 8th Nationally, never a player for the NC this year (but top 10 in a really down year).

Flo’s teams seem to be a little more inconsistent (results vary more) than most of the top programs.  He runs it like a business and it is a tough “produce, internally rank every week” system.  He has had better results on the women’s side than the men’s.

I have mentioned before on these forums that Lil’ Nigel plays D1 football and runs track (just finished redshirting his freshman year).  His training group has had a handful of athletes recruited by UT over the past 5 years.  All of them did not like their visits or get a good feeling from Coach Flo (and this is during competing for and winning national championships).  I don’t know what that means other than that is what happened.  Now, Pat Henry at A&M is track coaching royalty, but he is certainly no walk in the park either, and I can confirm that first hand.  But, he has a lot of skins on the wall, including yet another NC last night.  Dude recruits.

Flo, is not everyone’s cup of tea (no one is, including Henry) and he seems to find enough of his athletes to compete, but his program seems to be just on the outside of the “Top Programs.”

Texas men finished in 34th place. The post-season meeting with coach Flo and CDC won't be roses and rainbows, especially if that's what cost us the directors cup.

I’m going to hold your hand when I say this—no one cares about, or is getting fired because of, the Director’s Cup or us losing it.

Time for an appointment at, say, Snook cemetery?

First off, Pat Henry is track royalty who hates, hates, hates, hates, hates Texas. He and Bev never got along and had a few spats back in the day when Henry was at LSU. What’s upsetting is the only reason he’s at A&M is because A&M promised him they’d build him whatever he wanted and LSU told him “no” because he was winning NCs at LSU without that stuff (and because LSU wanted that money for football because that’s all they care about). Henry started to slip a little as A&M hadn’t won in a while, and now they are back.

Flo was highly regarding coming out of Kentucky. The hire was a home run at the time. The post above is a good post about what it takes to be successful under him, and it sounds like it’s backfiring.

As long as Henry is at A&M, they will have leverage over Texas because Henry can flash a ton of rings and Olympic success at recruits. Plus, he’s like the coach K of track coaches right now. I don’t think Flo is getting fired, but the results have been pretty lackluster since the highs of his first year or 2.

Also, Texas’ problem is facilities as well. We don’t have an indoor facility (like other universities, especially our most main and major rivals) and our current outdoor track facility is outdated compared to other track complexes across the country.

And I had my chance to hurt Henry about 12 years ago when I ran into him at that Wendy’s off 35 and 340 in Waco.

I should have punched him just for his vanity license plate.

Honestly, the women’s track and field team has outperformed the men’s in recent years. Matter of fact I don’t ever remember the men’s team being that good or competing for NCAA Titles & What frustrates me most about our T&F program is the lack of top-tier sprinters and overall recruiting. Track and field is arguably more reliant on recruiting than even football, yet we haven’t consistently brought in the best talent.

When you look at the performances at Texas high school state meets, there’s no reason our men’s and women’s teams shouldn’t be national contenders every year—placing no lower than top 10.

I do agree that our facilities need a serious upgrade. Maybe that’s why CDC hasn’t made a change yet—he might be holding off until he can equip the program with better recruiting tools. But with everything else going on across Texas athletics, I’m not sure how high that is on his priority list. I guess we’ll see.

To be fair, Texas men and women were runners up in ‘22, with the women winning in ‘23.  Again, to me it’s the feeling of being just outside the top tier in consistency that is troubling.

Regarding facilities, if you are ever able, you need to go to Hayward Field at Oregon.  It is the best facility for any sport in college athletics.  It is truly fantastic.  I have been to A&M’s new facility and have a split view on it. it is really nice, but it’s like they could only finish half because of funding (see: Jimbo).  It’s not what it could be, but still really nice.

Scattershooting here, if I am Texas, I look really big picture and see about a multi-use facility at the current location that doubles as a premier track facility and hosting HS football games in the fall (like The Star up in Frisco, but mainly for track).  3/4 covered or something to handle the heat for track and potential rain for spectators.  Huge financial undertaking, but now is the time when the money is flowing.

I cared about winning the Cup because, why wouldn't I want Texas to win it? I want us undefeated in everything forever. But alas, despite 2 national championships and a sound thrashing of the SEC across the board this year, we jacked around and blew it...evidently because we can't recruit/coach enough great T&F athletes in a state loaded with them. I think Texas State's 2 high jumpers outscored our men's team. That ain't gonna cut it.
