Here’s to hoping for lots of adventures and less on melodrama.

The adventure part is there. Very Indiana Jones vibes

Helps when you have something of the highest security level so you only send three officers over to a derelict ship, even though you know there are multiple people who are cloaked.

SNW renewed for season 4. Lower Decks will end after season 5

5 seasons might be the new shelf life for ST shows on P+

Man... Lower Decks is fantastic. But happy to see SNW renewed already.

I’m curious the plan after LD ends. Just SNW and the Academy series?  We need another animated one in the mix and you can do a lot to different eras with that type of show.

Seven of Nine with the a new Enterprise seems like a decent bet.

Star Trek has long been famous for its cameos, ranging from Joan Collins and Whoopi Goldberg to Stephen Hawking and The Rock. But we were still surprised to learn that Jordan's King Abdullah II made a cameo in a 1996 episode of Star Trek: Voyager while visiting the US as a young prince. Of course, it was only a non-speaking (and uncredited) role, because not even a royal title can trump the union rules of the Screen Actors Guild of America.

Agreed on Stamets but overall the last couple of episodes have kind of irritated me with their theme of "hey it's important to have good relationship with the bridge crew". Mother fuckers, you've spend the last 4 years not giving a shit about any of the crew, they have no personality because you haven't given them any actual material, why should I now buy your view that they are important. Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying this season but there's some too-little too-late here for me.

The last episode was pretty bad (S5 E8).

The ending with Moll and the Breen was laughable.

The Moll stuff was lame. The archive was awesome and I loved the test being in the mind space. Very Betazed

And a new Efrosian sighting! (Last seen as the President of the Federation in the TOS movies)

I was hoping the archive had some bad ass defense systems (since they had technology from all species) and could just defend themselves from the Breen.

I Betazoid test was cool, I wish the solution had been different, but being in the mind worked well for that test.

When does the next season of SNW drop?

2025 is what I saw when they just announced they have wrapped filming in Canada.  Guessing we will get a break over the summer, Lower Decks in the fall, then a winter break before SNW in the spring.

Is Prodigy dead dead, or will another studio pick it up?

Netflix could continue it if season 2 does well on there

Skydance and Paramount agree to merger terms.

Skydance has already had its hand in Trek (Kelvin movies) so some hope exists that Trek will be safe/thrive with this deal.

I've been spending time with my 71 year old dad on weekends lately. He's never seen anything Star Trek before although he loves scifi like The Outer Limits and such. Over the past several months, we've been watching 2 or 3 episodes of TNG when I visit, I've already seen lots and lots of Trek so I'm just rewatching them. We're about midway through Season 4 now and we're getting onto a string of really really good episodes and my dad is becoming hooked. After TNG I want to recommend he watches Deep Space 9 next. The entire reason he's watching TNG right now is because he heard the hype for Picard season 3 and wants to watch it with proper context. I hope when he finishes this all, he'll stick around for SNW and Lower Decks. The Drumhead is on the docket for next time I go over, and I can't wait for him to see that one.

They cast Mrs Incredible in Star Trek,

The “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” series at Paramount+ has cast Holly Hunter in a lead role, Varietyhas learned.

Hunter’s character will serve as the captain and chancellor of the Academy, presiding over both the faculty and a new class of Starfleet cadets as they learn to navigate the galaxy in the 32nd century.

Quote

“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” said co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. “To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across the board brilliance leading the charge on ‘Starfleet Academy’ is a gift to all of us, and to the enduring legacy of ‘Star Trek.'”

“Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting in Toronto later this summer, featuring the largest contiguous set ever constructed for a “Star Trek” series, a central academic atrium that will span two stories and include an amphitheater, classrooms, a mess hall, and a idyllic walkway lined with trees.

Quote

With its focus on higher education — from the throes of budding romance to the pressures of academic achievement to the angst of painful self-discovery — “Starfleet Academy” is part of a wider strategy to expand what a “Star Trek” show can look like.

“These are kids who’ve never had a red alert before,” Landau told Variety in a March 27 cover story about the future of “Star Trek.” “They never had to operate a transporter or be in a phaser fight.”

Quote

Hunter is part of an elite society of actors to boldly go into “Star Trek” after winning an Academy Award, including Whoopi Goldberg, Louise Fletcher and F. Murray Abraham. Hunter earned an Oscar for best actress for her performance in 1993’s “The Piano,” along with nominations for 1987’s “Broadcast News,” 1993’s “The Firm” and 2003’s “Thirteen.” Her career has spanned five decades, from her breakout role in the Coen brothers film “Raising Arizona” in 1987 to her iconic role as the voice of Elastigirl in 2004’s “Incredibles” and 2018’s “Incredibles 2.”

Some big names for Academy

https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/star-trek-paul-giamatti-starfleet-academy-villain-1236032978/

Set phasers to stunned. In another casting coup, the upcoming Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” has cast Emmy winner and multiple Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti in a recurring guest role as the first season’s main villain, who has a sinister connection to the past of one of the (yet to be cast) cadets.

Giamatti joins Holly Hunter, who Variety exclusively reported in May is boarding “Starfleet Academy” as the Academy’s captain and chancellor.

“Sometimes you’re lucky enough to discover that one of the greatest actors alive is also a huge ‘Star Trek’ fan, and meeting Paul was one of those miraculous moments for us,” said co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau in a statement. “The sheer delight with which he dove in on ‘Starfleet Academy’ is only surpassed by the gratitude we feel about him joining our incredible cast.”

How is Star Trek attracting Oscar-worthy talent for what looked like a second-tier show?

if you could go back five years and tell yourself that Paul Giamatti and Holly Hunter would be headlining a Star Trek show about Starfleet Academy, you’d probably look at your future self and make a mental note to start hitting the gym more often,

My dad started deep space 9 tonight after we watched a couple episodes of TNG. The first episode of Deep Space 9 blew his fucking mind.

And the 1st season is when the show is the the least locked in - by S3 or 4 they're really cooking with gas. It's surprising how many of their episodes are still pretty dang topical today
