How do Pannell and Johnson compare? The former certainly has had a lot of relief experience, which could be useful. Johnson had big K numbers the past two seasons, but I'm not sure how good her opponents were. Anyway, either lefty would seem well worth pursuing.

Texas is apparently the favorite for Jones and Edwards.  We are apparently in the top 2-3 for Kennedy, Johnson and Pannell.

Sa'Mya Jones looks like a pinch runner - not sure how a 5'3 infielder is good for us?  You bring in Edwards at 3rd, Vivi back at short, Goode slides back to her natural 2B position and bring Stewie in at 1st (?).  Prioritize Kennedy in LF for an outfield trio of Kennedy-Henry-Maloney.  Kennedy hit .444 as a lefty hitter and had 2 HR off Canady last year.

Pannell is probably the pitcher you prioritize - lefty who led the NCAA in saves this year.

Do you have the stats for these ladies as well as pictures?

I like Pannell because she pitched in the SEC for 3 years.

Gave up 1 run to OU in 4 innings pitched over 2 games.  She's def a reliever by nature - 6 save in 21 appearances a freshman, 15 in 30 appearances in 2024 and 3 in 33 this year (started 7 games).  Missouri was also bad bad bad this year.  Her sophomore year was her best year - 1.21 ERA.

Maya Johnson had a 1.52 ERA this year in 207 IP with 366 strikeouts.  She's a workhorse.  Against p4 teams:

1-hit GT in 6 innings and gave up no runs, struck out 10
2-hit ASU in 8 innings, giving up 1 ER with 12 strikeouts
3-hit Purdue in 8 innings, giving up no runs with 12 strikeouts
3-hit Maryland, giving up no runs with 13 strikeouts
She did not have good outings against VT in the tournament - 10 innings, 10 ER and only 11 strikeouts total across 2 games.

I’m already looking forward to watching this team play again, for the first time as defending national champions. If the SEC network doesn’t want to broadcast our Fall Ball slate, hopefully they allow LHN to step in and cover those games.

I'm sure it will be the usual McClennan, St. Ed's, TXST, etc. I wonder if we play aggy again? Wouldn't mind a UH or someone not in the SEC.

I'm curious what our conference slate will be next year - do we just rotate home/away from this year or do we pick up the teams we didn't face instead?  Texas did not face aggy, Arkansas, South Carolina, Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia.  If we assume we always play OU (and we better), that's 3 of the 24 games, so we need 7 more opponents. If we pick up the 6 we didn't play this year, we have to double-dip with someone we did play last year.

If Vandy would add softball, this would be really easy to keep a permanent rival (OU) and rotate the 7 other teams you face each year.

The most-watched women's college softball game ever was the Game 3 of the 2025 Women's College World Series, between Texas and Texas Tech, on June 6, 2025. This game averaged 2.4 million viewers on ESPN and ESPNU, with a peak viewership of 2.7 million according to The New York Times. The Longhorns won the game 10-4, securing their first national championship.

Hell yea, Baby….way to go ladies!

I read today that we are going "all in" on Addisen Fisher out of UCLA on the Reddit College Softball transfer portal thread

2.59 ERA in 113.2 IP, 16-2 in 32 appearances (16 starts), 1 save, 100 strikeouts to 41 walks

• NFCA Freshman of the Year Top 10 List (2025)
• Big Ten All-Freshman Team (2025)
• NFCA All-West Region First Team (2025)
• Big Ten Freshman of the Week (March 31, 2025)
• D1Softball First Team Freshman All-American (2025)

Might be hard to pull her away from Oregon if they want to go after the home state girl, but Mike may still have some connections to get that done. Her youth is interesting, since our pitching staff next year is SR Citlaly (if she stays), JR Kavan, SO Salmon, FR Wells.

We should invite UT-Tyler to play us in the fall. D1 champs vs. DII champs

On today's Coffee & Football, Mike White said one of the more interesting things I've ever heard stated by a coach in any sport. In talking about how he's mellowed out and isn't as much a stickler for every detail as he once was, he noted (paraphrasing here), "Guys need to play good to feel good. Girls need to feel good to play good."

What a perfect way to describe it. The difference in demeanor of male vs. female participants in most team sports has always been clear, but I'd never really thought about it being "hard-wired." Now that I reflect on it, I realize that even in high-pressure situations, the best softball and volleyball seem to be played when girls don't appear to take things all that seriously.

Not sure if this "rule" applies as much to basketball, in which all the top women's coaches (including Vic) seem to spend most of every game screaming about something and subbing girls out quickly following mistakes. Of course, the physical nature and flow of basketball dictate far more of a moment-by-moment coaching approach than is true of softball or even volleyball. But even in basketball girls rarely get as visibly upset when they screw up or are sent to the bench. Maybe there's just way less ego involved.

The game seems easier when you’re having fun out there

I’d also imagine it’s very different coaching styles for volleyball or softball vs basketball. Like you said, I think basketball is more hard ass personalities and the latter 2 are much more relaxed because your players aren’t being bodied and knocked to the ground most of the time

This is a good point.  Girls start sports similar to boys in the "is everyone having fun" stage but at some point it switches for boys for a dominance hierarchy, which is in the male DNA IMO.(and yes dads are a big part of that).  the "is everyone having fun stage" seems to continue to be ingrained for girls no matter how old.  I think some of this is trying to keep girls interested in staying in the game because many who probably could have been damn good athletes start to wander as the parents don't hound them like they would a boy.

I think that is why you see a bigger drop off in women's college sports after the top 10 teams in a sport.   The difference between the #1 player and the #200 player is massive.  again IMO.

I'm not saying girls need to be coddled/make it about fun, it is just the way it happens to work out, given our history.

Regardless of how long it takes Wells to adapt to D1 hitting, I have to think Hunter's gone. Losing six seniors with an incoming class of seven from HS suggests she won't be the only departure, either. Add another new face or two via the portal and we could have a roster much younger than this year's, but with a ton of championship DNA freshly baked in. Not trying to jinx us, but it all sets up as a great scenario for a repeat.

Well “much younger” being losing Joley and Mac and Mia. Big losses but TK, Reese, Goode, Maloney, Henry, Stewie will all be upper class and Vivi was basically a coach for a year

and by that, I mean somebody has to step up the way Mia and Joley did in Bella and Alyssa Washington’s absence

Maybe the girl who got you the win at the plate in game 1 of the champ series. Or the girl who hit a 3 run HR off the million dollar arm

Goode’s bat really did seem to come along against top pitching. Funny how consistent playing time can help that along.  I doubt she jumps up to a .400 hitter next year but she’s much better than she was in her spot appearances in 2024.

and with her, vivi, and Henry back we will be good defensively up the middle- which is always good for the diamond sports. Usually catcher is included, but Atwood has her physical limitations back there.  I’m sure she’ll work to get better.

She hit 31 HR this year and is the state’s all time HR leader. She can hit, and forget the fact that she is in 3A, she plays at a high level in travel ball. I expect her to be in the lineup next year. I actually think her bat projects better next year than her pitching.

Over the last couple weeks, Goode was critical in bringing home the trophy. Especially for someone being forced into SS duty at a tense time, she was outstanding. Her shoring up the bottom third of the batting order likewise was huge, even before the final HR heroics.

Mike mentioned this morning that Vivi's presence in the dugout was massive all season long. In fact, he likened her to another coach. Some fans might have forgotten just how great a player she is and what she figures to do for us in 2026 and '27. I won't be surprised if she comes close to what Mia gave us on offense this season, because she's displayed tremendous clutch hitting ability from the left side. And the combo of her at SS and Goode at 2B will be plenty strong defensively.

At least on paper, Atwood seems the prototypical 1B and Stewie as well suited to catching as anywhere else on the field. But I can't say that's where either of them mainly should play next season. As solid as Joley usually was, I do like the idea of an expanded catch radius at 1B.

I don’t get that one either. Hopefully not true

Edit:

With the increased scholarships, if Wallace opts to leave, she would be someone who can run for Atwood every single time she gets on base.

And this.

All Vivi did in her two seasons at Texas is hit .361, 32 doubles, 6 triples, 10 HR, 29:37 walk to K ratio and steal 10 bases. She was sorely missed.

Following the championship, Kavan drove 13 hours from Texas to Iowa to begin a summer internship at an advertising agency. Kavan pitched 31 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run during the WCWS, setting a new tournament record. Kavan played with a heavy heart.

Thanks to @Gut Wagon for mentioning this interview.    Great, great insight on the players, Coach Singleton, and the strategy for the championship finals including game 2.    Definitely worth 15 min of your time.   38:12 if time stamp fails.   Mike White is such an outstanding rep of The University of Texas.   Note what he says about trying to not portal recruit over talented signees and roster players.

Yep.  He isn't in the business of recruiting over his roster, like Patty.

Fill holes where needed.  The staff likely has a plan for what to do with Stewie (1B, 3B or leave her in LF), which gives them options for what to do in the portal (stud OF like Dakota Kennedy or a corner infielder like Tallen Edwards).  Same with likely having an idea of who is sticking around in the circle and what they should be pursuing.

The portal for softball closes June 16.  I'm sure Mike is working on end of season interviews now that the hangover of a national championship has faded a little and some players need to get in that motherfucka.  Except for Reese, TK, Stewie, Goode, Henry, Maloney, Cam (and Vivi, duh) - we ain't getting rid of you just yet.
