Are the cheese enchiladas there as good as they say?

Yes. As is everything at Garcias. Carne guisada. Puerco guisada. Brisket nachos. Everything is fantastic there.

I’ve never been. Will try and check it out this weekend. Usually just hit up Taco Bell for Mexican since Helobious said he highly recommends the local chain

Oblate was my go to on the way from kids school (Lee or Nimitz) and my office on 410

Oblate Cafe? Is this some kind of Blanco Cafe knockoff? I've never heard of it, but I was raised on Blanco Cafe.

Looking at pictures from Garcia's on Google I want this plate whatever it is called:

As well as this bowl of fideo

Might just get the regular cheese enchilada plate and see if they'll add brisket to the fideo

does anyone have a top notch south texas carne g recipe ?

I’ll have to dig up my mom’s. It’s not what a lot of folks are used to (thicker brown gravy, heavy comino). It’s simple - floured and browned meat, onions, garlic, tomatoes, a bit of broth, and time to simmer. Best made with venison. For real, we had family from Mexico who, when they would come visit, would ask my mom - NOLA born, but S Texas raised - to make it.

Honestly no idea how long they've been around, By the looks of their interior its gotta be 50 years.I doubt every place using a street they are located on plus cafe is a Blanco Cafe knock off.

It was a joke that only made sense to me. Oblate and Blanco road intersect where there used to be a Blanco Cafe just down the road from the Oblate Cafe location. Oblate Cafe is fairly new, mid 2000s I believe. Also there is the whole Original Blanco Cafe vs Blanco Cafe controversy.

That Oblate Cafe used be another Mexican food joint. I can't remember the name of it but it was pretty solid too. It actually is probably close to 50 years old.

The Blanco Cafe controversy is a feud between different family members IIRC. The details escape me after all these years, but I think it made for some pretty uncomfortable holiday gatherings.

Be sure to check the store hours and such before going because I was highly disappoint when I went to Garcias today and they were not open

How long have you lived in SA? I thought it was pretty common knowledge only National chain restaurants are open on Sundays here

Love pazzo pastaria. The owners are extremely friendly as well.

Tried this for the first time today. Lunch with wife. Very unassuming location. Weird part of town for a nice place. From outside, we wondered why it was recommended. But it was excellent. Homemade pasta. Did the Italian sodas. Will definitely go back for dinner. They also had a deli a couple doors down that I'm sure is good as well.

This is not close to true but sure. There are definitely a lot of places closed on Sunday but there a ton of local spots that are open on Sunday.

Express news letting their nuts hang on project marvel. All the comments and chatter online about the project is pretty solidly opposed to it, I’m hoping it’s enough that we can get it defeated and put our city and people first

Fuck off. This is a terrible take.

There are no property or sales tax increases for local  residents. This would be completely funded by rental car and hotel tax. The state collects this money and it can only be used for projects like this. You can’t use the money for road projects or for first responder salaries. Compared to more recent arena projects the public burden is much smaller. This is the type of project San Antonio desperately needs to make the city a better place. Frost Bank Center has been a disaster, it’s time to fix that. San Antonio has already fallen behind the other major Texas metros this would be one more nail in the coffin.

I did not know that there was anybody left that thinks its in the publics best interest to fund a billionaires arena.  I thought we all can see through that sham now.

A lot of local spots had found a way to keep Helo away one day a week, and you just ruined it.

how much public money are they asking for ?

$500 million in hotel tax and rental car tax, which by Texas law has to be used for these type of projects. The $500 million is for both the downtown arena and the renovations for the Freeman Coliseum and Frost Bank for the SA Rodeo. They would turn those into year round rodeo facilities.

This is not just about funding one arena for the Spurs it’s a multi stage development, that will eventually change downtown. Also the Holts are far from struggling but they are not billionaires either.

Just a reminder he had no clue what project marvel was or what it was going to do in the spurs thread. Also had no clue that the funding their using can only be used for these types of things or they lose it.

He's feeling emboldened since a few others who don't care about how this would benefit downtown are coming out of the woodwork.

This will benefit no one but rich developers and the holt family. We are never making our money back on this thing, and it’s laughable to think there’s enough hotel and rental car revenue to cover at least half a billion dollars cost. It’s funny to hear them talk about the development that will come with it, new restaurants and bars and hotels. They said the Frost bank center would bring the exact same thing, 20 years later and we are still waiting.

The Spurs have already committed to cover any additional cost. I’ll give you that Frost was a failure. That does not mean that this will be. Two completely different projects with completely different investment schedules and backing. This is were Frost Bank should have been built in the first place.

toyota center stays pretty damn busy with non basketball events. great concert venue.

year round rodeo would do good in SA

per 1200 woai ...

WOAI hosts just schooled a caller spreading disinformation about San Antonio's Props A & B. Facts matter, folks!

The Alamodome? Paid off in 18 months. Frost Bank Center? Paid off and profitable. The new arena? Spurs will pay the city $4M annually for 30 years.

Yet some people - left AND right - keep pushing false narratives about taxpayers being "on the hook for billions." This is exactly why we need to fact-check everything before voting.

Do your homework, San Antonio. Don't let disinformation campaigns fool you into voting against your own interests. The venue tax has a proven track record of success in our city.

Knowledge is power. Use it.
