As an offshoot from the Chuck Mangione thread.  Post your favorites, jazz, pop, rock, classical, whatever.  Share any stories if you want.

First up, always loved the break at 1:18 or so

Nextt up, I mentioned this one in the Chuck thread.  I remember, 1980, my mentor Willie Streider , he as a senior at Sealy when I was a freshman, took me under his wing, we drove up to Sam Houston in Huntsville for a district-all state tryouts clinic, driving through the pine trees on a rainy morning and he put this tape on.  Blew me away, still does.  Willie (Will as he goes by now) made all-state, went to UH and then became the long-time trumpet instructor at Texas Tech, retired a couple of years ago.

Alan Parsons songs always had some killer french horn lines.  I actually wanted to play french horn but when I started band (5th grade, do any bands start that early anymore?) in Hempstead, they didn't offer it, just cornet or trumpet.  Wanted a cornet but trumpet was cheaper, and we were poor, so there you go.

Another one with some great horn runs..

I geek out over grouped horn parts, whether in unison or in harmony -- big band (eg Maynard), jazz-rock (eg Chicago), funk (eg Earth Wind & Fire), whatever.  But Stevie tops the list for me (spoilered for size):

I tried out of the Cadets of Bergen County in like.... 2002, 2003 maybe (I got offered alternate for Cadets and membership for Crossmen, I ended up not doing it)? I can't remember if this was one of the songs we worked up at camp or whatever, but I wound up with the sheet music and, given a couple of days to get back into shape I think I could still rip the first part on my flugelhorn.

I was in Jr High in the napster era. THPS and Blink 182 were already shaking me out of whatever mainstream nu-metal rap rock shit I was half into as a 13 year old MTV viewer and then I downloaded this album and it was game on

i could go down the rabbit hole of every ska band I found my way towards, and I should go ahead and toss a Reel Big Fish song up..

but then this show was one that blew my 17 year old mind. I was excited to see the fucking Voodoo Glow Skulls at my own bands favorite venue to play at and oh yeah Rx Bandits that's cool too, and they were there with a totally different sound than their very very third wave stuff

for good measure

and why not

Big fan of this thread so far, and looking forward to listening to many of the vids above.

The best live act I ever saw with horns was Tower of Power - in my case it was Caravan of Dreams in FW in the mid-90s, but they’ve been solid since the 70s. A couple fine examples:

I’m not 100% that I’m not mixing concerts together but I could swear I saw TOP with BB King and Jimmie Vaughan (and Indigenous) at the Arena in Houston in the late 90s. I was a kid going to a concert with my dad so of course it was incredible but I remember it being incredible.

I Wish kicks so much ass.  I love on the chorus, the first 3 brass hits are on the downbeat, but then that 4th one is on the previous last 16th beat, like a punch in the chest, my favorite part of the whole song.
