Mostly, I remain worried that this is the way of breaking news softly, before later revealing that we agreed to a modified compact, which would still be 100% bullshit.

These two words are what concerns me, because what do these even mean (and "value" sounds like tuition-related, but maybe I'm reaching):

I am concerned that he mentions “The University of Texas at Austin will serve as a model for restoring public trust in higher education.“ The public already trusted higher education until people deliberately tried to destroy that trust with lies. UT Austin should not even feel the need to acknowledge public distrust and give these ridiculous ideas any credibility. To do so is to suggest the university has gone astray and will now fix the role it played in causing this fictitious problem.

This email went out from Jim Davis this afternoon:

Sorry if formatting is weird, pasting from my phone. It doesn’t mention the compact, which could be a sign they are planning to ignore it and hope it fizzles out and a formal decision is never required. Unfortunately, that may be the best case scenario for UT at this point, given the players involved.

Didn't the LBJ library once show a film where something in your seat would poke you to make you think a rattlesnake is biting you?  Maybe I'm remembering a different place, but I don't want to think about the details of such an attraction at the Trump library.

what kind of porn theater were you in ????

That’s the Bob Bullock museum.

Any changes in UT policy should come at the behest of the people of Texas through the State, not from any administration in Washington DC.

This is coming from the same crowd that says "liberals politicize everything," while they are currently politicizing the shit out of higher education in Texas, from DC

The (majority of voting) people of the State of Texas elected Donald Trump, as well as Greg Abbott, and Abbott has been and will always be completely aligned with and beholden to Donald Trump.

So, changes in UT policy are in fact coming at the behest of the people of Texas through the State.

University policies were not a part of the national platforms, IIRC.

Right, and Donald Trump knew nothing about Project 2025.  Whatever may have been said during the 2024 presidential elections, it's clear that university policies have been part of the national platform throughout 2025.

And corporate HQs will continue moving to the state cause escaping taxes is more important than democracy and academic freedom.

Remember, per our SCOTUS, corporations are people, with all attendant constitutional rights, indeed they have GREATER constitutional rights than actual people.  They are just, conveniently, also unencumbered by any of the morals, ethics, or other basic human restrictions that actual people operate under.

Remember this line?

"That Terminator is out there, it can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with, it doesn't feel pity or remorse or fear, and it absolutely will not stop… EVER, until you are dead."

Let's adapt it for the current timeline:

"That Corporation is out there, it can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with, it doesn't feel pity or remorse or fear, and it absolutely will not stop… EVER, until it has captured the last penny of potential profit."

That's it.  We have created super-entities that (1) are motivated solely by maximum near-term profit, and (2) unencumbered by any meaningful laws, rules, morality, ethics, or restrictions of any kind.  In fact, we have created a legal framework that makes standing in the way of their relentless drive to extract the very last penny illegal.

When you live in a society that deems human beings strictly as (1) sources from which evermore revenue can be extracted and simultaneously (2) an expense that must be eliminated wherever possible....this is the "utopia" you get.  And UT will be leading the way to make that the order for generations to come.  "What starts here changes the world" indeed.  I mean, turning the world into an inhumane hellscape IS a change.  So...yay.
