shenanigans !!!

That decision means all Dallas County voters will have to cast ballots at their assigned precinct rather than at countywide vote centers on Election Day. By law, if one party wants to use precinct-based voting, then the other must do the same. And by law, any hand-count of ballots has to be done at each of the county’s polling locations. During the 12-day early voting period, voters will still be able to cast ballots anywhere in the county.

Sounds like shitty law.

If Miami can boot out the Republicans after 28 years, and with a woman no less, I have some hope that things next year will be a lot better than we hope.

I am curious how much, if any, of the resistance is because Trump's minions wanted to hang Pence.

Interesting thought.  Regarding the Miami Mayor, I saw where the Hispanic vote turned heavily democratic compared to past years.  I’m hopeful that the Texas gerrymander districts include the assumption that Hispanic vote will go largely GOP in the 2024 percentage. It would be a hoot if Texas created their own Democratic congressional districts if pissed off Hispanics turned heavily democratic in the midterm

The lawsuits, recounts, and fraud allegations/investigations would be limitless.  This just isn’t possible, it must be shenanigans!!!!

Well, I mean, yeah.  But you and I both know that Hispanics are not at all a monolithic group.  And between South Florida and South Texas, it's a pretty huge variation.

You need 67% to override the veto. I totally agree with you if the Ds control all 3 in 2028.

If you can override the veto, you can start impeaching and convicting some motherfuckers.

They better never take that early voting period away. By far my favorite part of Texas politics. Granted that is not a very high bar.

That is always the danger of gerrymandering. You do too much of it and your gerrymander can collapse suddenly.

Republican voters probably saw his name was Dutch Guest and thought he was an illegal immigrant.

I really feel like this is going to happen in Texas. It was already drawn so heavily republican it won’t take much in a few places to flip districts. I think it’s a wash from the old map and may be a net loss

For sure.  But Cubans are only 25% of Hispanic population in Florida.  You are absolutely correct that they are far more hardwired to always vote GOP.

If ICE is truly going to make a huge push in South Texas, things could get very interesting.

GOP managing expectations. Things could change (Supreme Court overturning tariffs and some kind of a breakthrough on ACA subsidies - which Trump has said he wants) would change the calculus considerably:

Quote

“His message sucks. It’s absolute trash. ‘Affordability is a Democrat hoax’??? Give me a break,” said one strategist, a veteran of presidential and congressional campaigns. “It’s the non-college-educated version of the Biden message, and we saw how well that worked. . . . Nobody believes the economy and particularly affordability is getting better.”

According to a third GOP strategist, Republicans are likely to find themselves in particularly bad shape next year precisely because Trump demands that they stay loyal to him. “There have been past White Houses where it was okay to have some distance between yourself and the president,” he said. “A candidate who says, ‘Yeah, maybe tariffs aren’t a great idea because of what they’re doing to prices,’ or whatever the case may be . . . That is clearly not the case with this administration.”

Past presidents might have put up with disrespect—or allowed for some strategic distance—from candidates in close races, reasoning that they’d rather have congressional majorities than enforce personal purity tests. Donald Trump is about as far the opposite of that as possible.

Yup.   I know I’m a broken record, but Democrats really don’t need the 15 to 20% swing that we are seeing in some states.   A 6 or 10% swing could reduce a republican bloodbath.

At this point, I think it is pretty well established that most voters only care about themselves and their own financial well-being.    I don’t think Hispanics are gonna react as devotedly to the strong leader construct if their businesses are going broke and their families are having a hard time paying their bills.

If “it’s the economy stupid” is really the driver, then all of the demographic masturbation thoughts really don’t matter.  I recently saw a bunch of interviews with young people before the 2024 election, and none of them really had any idea how anything worked, but all of them were feeling pressured and scared by poor economic conditions - high food and housing accompanied by employment difficulties and inability to own a home, crippling student loans, etc.

None of their responses had anything to do with political philosophy, and almost everything to do with their personal financial situation.   I continue to pray for the deep recession that will cause massive pain to the country yet save our democracy.

As someone not at all familiar with RGV Mexican Trump supporters, what is the reason for that? I got mine now, raise the ladder and eliminate any future economic competition?

Yes. But it doesn’t matter if they still support him if they can’t vote from their el Salvadoran prison cells. Let’s see how discerning ICE is.

Seems like the GOP plans to end birthright citizenship needs to be emphasized with that crew.  I see where SCOTUS is taking that up again
